- 3/4 cup sugar
- 5 oz of fresh goat cheese

%20and%20they're%20everywhere,%20and%20I%20do%20mean%20everywhere.%20They're%20there%20for%20the%20gleaning%20at%20roadsides,%20and%20in%20backyards%20where%20there%20are%20such%20an%20abundance%20that%20people%20are%20just%20happy%20to%20have%20you%20come%20and%20take%20them%20off%20their%20hands.%20I%20like%20to%20think%20of%20them%20as%20a%20sweet%20version%20of%20zucchini.%20Except%20with%20figs,%20no%20one%20seems%20to%20leave%20a%20basket%20of%20them%20on%20the%20doorstep%20then%20ring%20the%20bell%20and%20run%20away.%20I%20wish%20they%20did.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20the%20first%20things%20we%20did%20after%20we%20bought%20our%20new%20house%20was%20plant%20fruit%20trees,%20of%20course%20a%20fig%20tree%20was%20the%20first%20tree%20in%20the%20ground.%20I%20went%20to%20the%20nursery%20looking%20for%20a%20Black%20Mission%20Fig%20tree.%20I%20had%20some%20delusional%20idea%20that%20figs%20came%20in%20two%20colors%20and%20two%20varieties,%20black%20and%20green,%20boy%20was%20I%20wrong.%20I%20only%20found%20out%20how%20wrong%20I%20was%20a%20couple%20of%20weeks%20ago.%20The%20night%20before%20the%20earthquake%20we%20went%20to%20a%20dinner%20at%20Sondra%20Bernsteins%20Pop%20Up%20venue%20Suite%20D.%20It%20was%20a%20Kale%20and%20Ping%20Pong%20Dinner.%20I%20thought%20it%20was%20going%20to%20be%20a%20meal%20of%20various%20kale%20dishes,%20and%20yes%20there%20was%20kale,%20but%20the%20kale%20Sondra%20meant%20was%20a%20young%20winemaker%20named%20Kale%20Anderson%20and%20it%20was%20the%20name%20of%20his%20winery%20Kale%20Wines.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20the%20dinner%20we%20were%20seated%20next%20to%20%20Peter%20and%20Gwen%20Jacobsen%20of%20Jacobsen%20Orchards%20in%20Yountville%20%20among%20the%20restaurants%20they%20supply%20are%20the%20French%20Laundry,%20and%20boy%20do%20they%20know%20figs.%20They%20broughjt%20a%20wide%20variety%20to%20the%20dinner%20and%20quickly%20educated%20me%20as%20to%20what%20I'd%20bought.%20It%20turned%20out%20that%20the%20wierdly%20colored%20yellow%20and%20green%20striped%20figs%20I%20had%20growing%20in%20my%20backyard%20weren't%20sick,%20or%20mutants,%20they%20were%20Panache%20Striped%20Tiger%20Figs.%20That%20particular%20variety%20Gwen%20told%20me%20were%20especially%20delicious.%20I%20went%20home%20with%20new%20respect%20for%20my%20tree%20and%20a%20determination%20to%20get%20another%20one.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20fig%20tree%20however%20didn't%20put%20out%20enough%20figs%20this%20first%20year%20to%20really%20make%20anything%20out%20of,%20so%20I%20went%20to%20my%20favorite%20source,%20our%20friend%20Bruce%20Needleman's%20Fig%20Tree.%20%20Needleman's%20fig%20tree%20is%20behind%20Needleman's%20store%20and%20he's%20perfectly%20happy%20to%20let%20me%20pillage%20it%20every%20year.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20now%20that%20we're%20settled%20in%20the%20house,%20I'm%20back%20behind%20the%20stove%20and%20ready%20to%20put%20all%20this%20new%20equipment%20of%20mine%20to%20work.%20Casting%20around%20for%20the%20perfect%20thing%20to%20make%20in%20the%20new%20kitchen%20on%20a%20hot%20September%20afternoon%20(94%20degrees)%20I%20turned%20to%20the%20other%20thing%20we've%20got%20plenty%20of%20here%20in%20Sonoma.%20Goats.%20Goat%20cheese%20to%20be%20exact.%20Laura%20Chenel's%20is%20about%20a%20mile%20and%20a%20half%20from%20our%20new%20house%20so%20I%20went%20and%20got%20some%20fresh%20goat%20cheese%20with%20the%20idea%20of%20making%20a%20simple%20goat%20cheese%20ice%20cream.%20As%20I%20drove%20past%20Needleman's%20fig%20tree%20I%20thought,%20hmmmm%20maybe%20some%20roasted%20figs%20in%20that%20goat%20cheese%20ice%20cream....the%20game%20was%20afoot.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoasted%20Fig%20and%20Goat%20Cheese%20Ice%20Cream%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20What%20You%20Need:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20What%20To%20Do:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20400%20degrees%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWash%20and%20dry%20the%20figs%20carefully.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECut%20the%20stems%20off%20and%20cut%20an%20X%20shape%20in%20the%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20figs%20in%20an%20oven-proof%20baking%20dish%20and%20drizzle%20them%20with%202%20Tbs%20of%20olive%20oil.%20I%20used%20California%20Olive%20Ranch%20Arbequina%20variety%20which%20has%20a%20great%20fruity%20bite,%20perfect%20for%20figs,%20and%20or%20ice%20cream.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPop%20the%20figs%20into%20the%20oven%20to%20roast%20for%2020%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeanwhile%20mix%20together%20the%20sugar...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E...2%20cups%20of%20whipping%20cream...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E...and%201%20cup%20of%20milk.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir%20the%20mixture%20together%20well%20and%20place%20the%20pot%20on%20the%20stove%20at%20a%20low%20heat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20the%20milk%20/cream%20mixture%20starts%20to%20steam%20but%20not%20boil,%20take%20the%20pan%20of%20the%20heat%20and%20add%20in%205%20oz%20of%20fresh%20goat%20cheese.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir%20the%20goat%20cheese%20in%20until%20it's%20melted%20and%20blended.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20mixture%20into%20a%20container%20and%20set%20it%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETake%20the%20roasted%20figs%20out%20of%20the%20oven.%20Let%20them%20cool%20a%20bit%20them%20put%20them%20into%20a%20blender%20or%20food%20processor%20to%20puree.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir%20the%20pureed%20fig%20mixture%20into%20the%20ice%20cream%20blend.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20the%20fig%20goat%20cheese%20ice%20cream%20blend%20into%20the%20fridge%20to%20chill%20for%20a%20few%20hours.%20You%20want%20it%20cold%20before%20putting%20it%20into%20a%20ice%20cream%20machine.%20I%20usually%20let%20mine%20it%20out%20a%20bit%20to%20come%20to%20room%20temperature%20before%20I%20put%20it%20in%20the%20fridge.%20Another%20alternative%20it%20to%20set%20the%20bowl%20into%20an%20ice%20water%20bath%20to%20give%20it%20a%20flash%20chill.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20few%20hours%20when%20the%20ice%20cream%20mixture%20has%20chilled%20down,%20stir%20it%20up%20again%20as%20the%20cheese%20will%20have%20congealed%20a%20bit,%20and%20put%20it%20into%20your%20ice%20cream%20machine.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20it%20churn%20for%20about%2025%20minutes.%20Bingo,%20ice%20cream!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20a%20very%20rich%20creamy%20dessert,%20figgy%20with%20a%20mild%20goat%20cheese%20flavor.%20All%20one%20needs%20is%20a%20scoop,%20as%20a%20little%20goes%20a%20long%20way.%20The%20combo%20of%20goat%20cheese%20and%20olive%20oil%20roasted%20figs%20satisfy%20any%20dessert%20craving.%20I'm%20thinking%20of%20pairing%20it%20with%20a%20savory%20shortbread,%20which%20brings%20me%20to%20what%20I'm%20up%20to%20next,%20an%20adult%20fig%20newton.%20I%20can't%20stay%20away%20from%20Needleman's%20fig%20tree%20and%20unless%20he%20buys%20a%20shot%20gun%20and%20that%20Lab%20of%20his%20grows%20some%20balls,%20I'm%20going%20to%20keep%20cooking%20with%20his%20figs.%20Follow%20along%20on%20Twitter%20@kathygori%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
