%20occurs%20as%20a%20result%20of%20low%20temperatures%20at%20night.%20Maybe%20the%20blood%20orange%20is%20just%20half%20vampire,%20sucking%20the%20blood%20of%20other%20fruits%20or%20woodland%20creatures%20at%20night.%20Certainly%20won't%20see%20that%20in%20Wikipedia.%20Get%20this%20one,%20then%20the%20bottle%20with%20the%20green%20label%20to%20make%20it%20a%20complete%20set%20-%20Photo%20by%20Wasabi%20Prime%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20lucky%20to%20get%20my%20cocktail%20mitts%20on%20some%20samples%20of%20rye%20whiskey%20from%20Bulleit,%20same%20makers%20of%20Bulleit%20Bourbon,%20one%20of%20my%20favorites.%20This%20was%20before%20the%20bottles%20were%20hitting%20the%20shelves,%20but%20by%20now%20I'm%20sure%20it's%20easy%20enough%20to%20find%20them%20at%20your%20local%20liquor%20store%20--%20it's%20in%20the%20same%20packaging%20as%20their%20bourbon,%20just%20a%20green%20label%20versus%20an%20orange%20one,%20but%20if%20you're%20at%20the%20store,%20what%20the%20heck,%20get%20both.%20I%20was%20just%20glad%20to%20get%20apothecary-looking%20sample%20bottles%20to%20play%20mad%20mixologist%20with.%20I%20was%20also%20glad%20to%20play%20around%20with%20blood%20oranges,%20which%20are%20pretty%20versatile%20ingredients%20--%20more%20sugar-sweet%20than%20other%20citrus,%20which%20can%20have%20a%20little%20tart%20bite%20to%20it.%20Despite%20the%20fact%20that%20it'll%20stain%20your%20cutting%20board%20and%20make%20it%20look%20like%20bloody%20murder,%20when%20you%20mix%20it%20in%20a%20cocktail,%20the%20deep%20red%20turns%20more%20berry%20or%20pink,%20depending%20on%20how%20much%20you%20use.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20actually%20made%20a%20couple%20of%20different%20cocktails,%20using%20both%20rye%20and%20gin,%20just%20to%20see%20how%20the%20blood%20orange%20juice%20would%20work%20with%20different%20spirit%20flavor%20profiles.%20For%20the%20gin,%20I%20used%20more%20of%20the%20blood%20orange%20juice,%20mixing%20it%20with%20a%20lavender%20simple%20syrup%20and%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20Luxardo%20maraschino%20liqueur.%20The%20herbal%20quality%20of%20gin%20balanced%20out%20the%20floral%20sweetness%20of%20the%20fruit%20and%20sugar-sweetness.%20The%20jezebel-hued%20cocktail%20was%20a%20strong%20little%20vixen%20that%20still%20needs%20fine-tuning,%20but%20still%20good.%20If%20I%20had%20more%20blood%20oranges%20handy,%20I'd%20have%20thinly%20sliced%20and%20candied%20them%20for%20a%20pretty%20garnish,%20but%20we'll%20save%20that%20for%20another%20time.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EViews%20from%20the%20Wasabi%20Mixologist%20Lab,%20aka,%20our%20kitchen%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20Prime%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20warmer%20season%20made%20me%20want%20to%20take%20rye%20on%20a%20summer%20vacation,%20so%20I%20used%20similar%20ingredients%20to%20put%20a%20colorful%20twist%20on%20a%20traditional%20Rye%20Fizz.%20This%20version,%20along%20with%20rye,%20simple%20syrup%20and%20seltzer,%20uses%20some%20blood%20orange%20juice,%20a%20little%20dash%20of%20the%20Luxardo,%20and%20either%20fresh%20lemon%20balm%20or%20lemon%20juice.%20I%20used%20the%20lemon%20balm%20because%20we%20have%20a%20plant%20that%20is%20poised%20to%20take%20over%20the%20garden,%20and%20if%20untended,%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20free%20world.%20The%20resulting%20drink%20is%20what%20I%20whimsically%20like%20to%20call%20a%20Fizzywinkle.%20Sort%20of%20periwinkle-pink%20in%20color,%20fizzy%20from%20the%20seltzer,%20and%20a%20name%20devoid%20of%20%22blood%22%20because%20something%20this%20pastel-colored%20shouldn't%20sound%20so%20rough%20and%20scary.%20It's%20summery,%20happy,%20and%20despite%20the%20girly%20color,%20the%20rye%20packs%20enough%20of%20a%20punch%20--depending%20on%20how%20much%20seltzer%20you%20add%20--%20to%20land%20you%20on%20your%20rump-shaker.%20Let%20the%20happy%20hour%20begin!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Fizzywinkle%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(makes%20one%20cocktail,%20but%20double%20it,%20as%20you'll%20want%20another)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMuddle%20lemon%20balm%20in%20shaker%20full%20of%20ice,%20then%20add%20all%20ingredients%20except%20seltzer%20into%20shaker%20to%20mix,%20then%20strain%20into%20a%20separate%20glass%20filled%20with%20ice%20and%20top%20with%20seltzer%20before%20serving.%20Best%20served%20on%20a%20sunny,%20warm%20day.%20Repeat%20as%20necessary.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
