%20have%20done%20it%20if%20she%E2%80%99d%20had%20both%20her%20cell%20phone%20and%20a%20friend%20with%20her%20--%20but%20without%20those%20two%20things,%20no%20go.%20And%20so%20I%20found%20myself%20stuck%20in%20the%20car%20with%20Em%20in%20full%20politician%20mode:%20alternately%20arguing%20her%20case%20and%20accusing%20me%20of%20not%20trusting%20her.%20%20There%20was%20some%20name%20calling%20on%20her%20part.%20%20Without%20her%20realizing%20it%20I%20turned%20down%20a%20side%20street%20and%20drove%20back%20toward%20our%20house,%20parked%20the%20car%20in%20the%20driveway%20where%20I%20turned%20off%20the%20ignition%20and%20waited%20for%20her%20to%20finish%20before%20asking%20her%20if%20she%E2%80%99d%20like%20to%20stay%20home%20while%20I%20picked%20up%20her%20sister,%20or%20go%20get%20something%20to%20do%20in%20car%20while%20we%20picked%20up%20her%20sister%20because%20we%20sure%20as%20hell%20weren%E2%80%99t%20going%20to%20the%20bookstore%20now.%20And%20this%20morning:%20I%20go%20to%20wake%20her%20at%20about%208:30,%20as%20I%20always%20do,%20and%20she%20asks%20me%20to%20snuggle,%20a%20rare%20request,%20so%20of%20course%20I%20want%20to%20snuggle,%20which%20I%20do%20for%20a%20few%20minutes,%20but%20I%20have%20several%20things%20to%20do%20(make%20lunches,%20put%20over%20laundry,%20walk%20the%20dogs,%20take%20a%20shower)%20before%20we%20leave%20for%20camp%20so%20I%20give%20her%20a%20kiss%20and%20remind%20her%20to%20get%20going%20and%20I%E2%80%99m%20half%20way%20down%20the%20steps%20to%20the%20kitchen%20when%20I%20hear:%20MOM!%20MOM!%20--%20and%20I%20rush%20back%20up%20thinking%20something%E2%80%99s%20wrong%20(bloody%20nose?).%20%20I%20get%20as%20far%20as%20her%20doorway%20when%20she%20says,%20%E2%80%9Ccan%20you%20pull%20my%20blankets%20up%20for%20me?%20%20I%E2%80%99m%20cold.%E2%80%9D%20This%20child,%20who%20can%E2%80%99t%20pull%20her%20own%20blankets%20up,%20is%20indignant%20that%20I%20won%E2%80%99t%20allow%20her%20to%20go%20to%20the%20bookstore%20and%20hang%20out%20by%20herself.%20Sigh.%20There%E2%80%99s%20more,%20but%20I%20won%E2%80%99t%20bore%20you.%20%20It%E2%80%99s%20enough%20to%20know%20she%20hates%20me/she%20loves%20me/%20she%20needs%20me/%20I%E2%80%99m%20an%20idiot.%20%20I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20on%20both%20sides%20of%20this%20equation%20now,%20and%20frankly,%20if%20I%20had%20to%20choose,%20I%20choose%20my%20present%20(parental)%20side%20because%20nothing%20could%20make%20me%20go%20through%20those%20teen%20years%20again.%20%20I%E2%80%99m%20getting%20whiplash%20alternating%20between%20sympathy%20for%20my%20girl%20and%20complete%20engulfing%20frustration.%20Living%20with%20her%20%20right%20now%20is%20like%20trying%20to%20balance%20on%20a%20surfboard:%20We%E2%80%99re%20at%20the%20top%20of%20a%20ten%20story%20wave%20an%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ed%20my%20only%20hope%20is%20to%20plant%20my%20feet%20and%20keep%20my%20head%20so%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20flip%20both%20of%20us%20beneath%20the%20foam.%20But%20last%20night:%20we%20had%20fun.%20%20She%20took%20a%20cooking%20class%20recently,%20so%20last%20night%20she%20gave%20us%20a%20quick%20tutorial%20in%20the%20art%20of%20fried%20wontons%20which%20we%20filled%20with%20chicken%20and%20broccoli%20and%20sauteed%20up%20in%20a%20pan%20of%20grapeseed%20oil,%20then%20ate,%20piping%20hot,%20with%20our%20fingers.%20%20Em%20says%20this%20is%20a%20great%20way%20to%20use%20up%20the%20leftovers%20in%20the%20fridge,%20and%20I%20totally%20agree.%20%20A%20pack%20of%20wontons%20is%20not%20more%20than%20a%20few%20dollars%20at%20the%20store%20and%20you%20can%20fill%20them%20with%20whatever%20you%20like.%20%20We%20just%20threw%20ours%20into%20a%20fry%20pan%20last%20night,%20but%20when%20we%20make%20them%20again,%20I%20think%20we%E2%80%99ll%20steam%20them%20a%20minute%20first%20then%20plonk%20them%20in%20the%20hot%20oil%20because%20then%20you%20only%20need%20to%20cook%20one%20side.%20%20They%20were%20crispy,%20golden,%20delicious.%20%20Her%20dad%20and%20I%20dipped%20our%20wontons%20in%20soy%20sauce,%20but%20Em%20liked%20hers%20plain.%20%20%20These%20would%20make%20great%20appetizers.%20Here%20are%20Em%E2%80%99s%20instructions%20on%20how%20to%20do%20it:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECook%20some%20chicken%20(I%20seasoned%202%20boneless%20chicken%20breasts%20with%20sea%20salt%20and%20pepper%20then%20poached%20them%20in%202%20cups%20of%20water%20with%20several%20dashes%20of%20low%20sodium%20soy%20sauce,%20a%20bay%20leaf%20and%20some%20gratings%20of%20ginger.)%20%20Or%20use%20some%20leftover%20chicken.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThaw%20about%201/2%20cup%20of%20broccoli%20and%20roughly%20chop%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUsing%20only%20small%20pieces%20of%20broccoli%20and%20chicken%20fold%20them%20into%20individual%20wontons.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESeal%20the%20wontons%20by%20dipping%20a%20finger%20in%20a%20glass%20of%20water%20and%20running%20your%20finger%20over%20the%204%20sides%20of%20the%20wonton%20and%20then%20folding%20the%20wonton%20into%20a%20triangle,%20or%20make%20a%20little%20pocket%20book%20by%20gathering%20the%20four%20corners%20together%20or%20roll%20it%20up%20and%20seal%20the%20ends%20by%20folding%20them%20over.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlonk%20them%20into%20hot%20grape%20seed%20oil.%20%20Fry%20until%20they%20are%20golden%20on%20all%20sides.%20(see%20notes)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENotes:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20use%20grape%20seed%20oil%20because%20it%20can%20safely%20get%20very%20hot%20--%20without%20catching%20fire%20(unlike%20olive%20oil).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEm%E2%80%99s%20cooking%20class%20threw%20them%20into%20a%20deep%20fryer%20--%20which%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20--%20but%20which%20would%20effectively%20cook%20all%20sides%20of%20the%20wonton%20all%20at%20once%20--%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhich%20is%20why%20I%E2%80%99d%20steam%20them%20first.%20%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20a%20steamer%20so%20I%20stick%20a%20colander%20in%20a%20large%20stock%20pot%20of%20boiling%20water%20and%20put%20a%20lid%20over%20the%20whole%20thing.%20%20Steam%20them%20just%20for%20a%20minute%20-%20maybe%20even%20less-%20so%20the%20wonton%20dough%20cooks%20a%20bit%20before%20tossing%20them%20in%20the%20oil.%20%20Then%20just%20cook%20one%20side%20up%20crispy%20and%20golden.%20%20We%20cooked%20our%20wontons%20in%20batches%20because%20we%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20a%20fry%20pan%20big%20enough%20to%20accommodate%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMake%20as%20many%20fried%20wontons%20as%20you%20have%20the%20patience%20for.%20%20We%20used%20about%203/4%20of%20a%20pack%20before%20Em%20got%20bored%20and%20hungry%20and%20we%20all%20just%20started%20shoving%20the%20cooked%20chicken%20and%20broccoli%20into%20our%20mouths%20until%20it%20was%20gone.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
