%20so%20we'll%20see%20how%20they%20look%20then.%20I%20might%20give%20them%20to%20my%20mum%20if%20she%20can%20find%20space%20for%20them.%20Hopefully%20we'll%20get%20a%20few%20green%20peppers%20in%20say%20November...!%20I%20should%20probably%20have%20planted%20them%20out%20earlier.%20Seeds%20can%20go%20into%20compost%20in%20February%20and%20no%20later%20next%20year,%20then%20hopefully%20they'll%20be%20big%20enough%20to%20plant%20out%20by%20the%20time%20it%20gets%20warm.%20The%20tomatillos%20are%20still%20growing...we'll%20see%20how%20that%20goes...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBlackberries%20have%20come%20and%20gone,%20too.%20Traci%20and%20I%20actually%20got%20around%20to%20picking%20some%20this%20year%20-%20we%20meant%20to%20last%20year%20but%20failed.%20I've%20never%20been%20a%20big%20jam%20person,%20but%20I%20did%20want%20to%20try%20cordial%20with%20them.%20I%20drink%20a%20fair%20amount%20of%20squash%20of%20one%20sort%20or%20another,%20and%20having%20something%20made%20of%20blackberries%20sounded%20great.%20I%20made%20the%20most%20enormous%20mess%20cooking%20them%20-%20I%20stained%20EVERYTHING%20a%20deep,%20dark%20purple.%20I%20have%20just%20ascertained%20though%20that%20with%20plenty%20of%20Vanish%20these%20stains%20seem%20to%20be%20happy%20to%20come%20out%20of%20even%20my%20pale%20grey%20tracksuit%20bottoms,%20though%20I%20have%20not%20yet%20succeeded%20in%20getting%20them%20out%20of%20the%20wooden%20chopping%20board...maybe%20I%20should%20try%20Vanish%20on%20that,%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20SMELL%20incredible%20-%20of%20roses...which%20shouldn't%20be%20a%20huge%20surprise%20because%20the%20plants%20are%20related.%20And%20I%20didn't%20really%20mind%20the%20stains%20when%20this%20colour%20is%20so%20amazing.%20I'd%20have%20them%20cooking%20all%20the%20time%20if%20I%20could,%20I%20think.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20a%20flick%20through%20some%20recipes%20on%20the%20net,%20but%20I%20didn't%20see%20any%20I%20was%20particularly%20keen%20on.%20I%20didn't%20want%20to%20adulterate%20the%20flavour%20of%20the%20fruit%20with%20spices%20as%20some%20recipes%20do%20-%20I've%20had%20spiced%20blackberry%20squash%20before%20and%20it's%20been%20a%20bit%20too%20cloying.%20This%20is%20a%20purer%20flavour.%20I%20suspect%20I%20added%20too%20much%20sugar%20(though%20hopefully%20this%20will%20mean%20it%20keeps%20better),%20and%20this%20somewhat%20overwhelms%20the%20flavour%20of%20the%20berries.%20The%20smell%20is%20still%20incredible,%20and%20it's%20not%20too%20cloying%20either%20as%20a%20drink%20when%20diluted%20with%20sparkling%20water.%20It's%20amazing,%20that%20black%20purple%20colour%20doesn't%20get%20any%20less%20when%20you%20water%20it%20down...it%20just%20stays%20black.%20It's%20less%20translucent%20than%20coke!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20didn't%20take%20proper%20measurements%20I'm%20afraid.%20I%20know%20I%20used%20around%202%201/2%20litres%20of%20blackberries%20and%20probably%20around%20400g%20of%20sugar%20maybe%20less.%20I%20was%20walking%20a%20line%20between%20trying%20not%20to%20make%20it%20too%20sweet%20and%20getting%20enough%20sugar%20into%20it%20that%20it%20would%20preserve%20it%20a%20bit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20boiled%20the%20fruit%20in%20a%20large%20heavy%20bottomed%20pot%20-%20I%20didn't%20need%20any%20water%20as%20it%20was%20already%20pretty%20juicy%20in%20there.%20I%20let%20it%20boil%20until%20it%20seemed%20more%20liquid%20than%20solid,%20and%20then%20added%20the%20sugar%20and%20boiled%20for%20a%20bit%20longer%20to%20let%20it%20dissolve.%20I%20then%20strained%20it%20through%20a%20sieve%20and%20then%20muslin.%20This%20was%20the%20part%20where%20I%20made%20such%20a%20mess%20-%20my%20sieve%20kept%20slipping%20and%20the%20sheer%20quantity%20to%20be%20strained%20meant%20that%20it%20went%20everywhere.%20Persevering,%20I%20eventually%20ended%20up%20with%20a%20thick%20dark%20syrup%20which%20I%20bottled%20in%20this%20rather%20lovely%20old%20olive%20oil%20bottle%20that%20I'd%20sterilised%20with%20boiling%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20been%20in%20the%20fridge%20ever%20since,%20and%20I%20don't%20think%20I'd%20want%20to%20store%20it%20out%20of%20the%20fridge.%20I've%20been%20drinking%20it%20with%20my%20dinner,%20and%20we%20made%20a%20cocktail%20with%20it,%20tequila,%20the%20juice%20of%20a%20lime%20and%20some%20fizzy%20water%20that%20was%20pretty%20nice,%20too.%20And%20it's%20virtually%20free!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
