%20but%20I%20do%20feel%20compelled%20to%20give%20you%20my%20honest%20thoughts%20about%20ChocolaTree%20in%20Sedona.%20Last%20time%20we%20were%20here%20we%20had%20looked%20at%20their%20menu%20outside%20the%20door%20and%20didn't%20feel%20moved%20to%20go%20in.%20Instead%20we%20went%20to%20a%20vegan%20restaurant%20called%20D%20Lish%20(which%20has%20since%20closed,%20unfortunately)%20that%20offered%20a%20few%20raw%20items%20and%20enjoyed%20a%20generous%20and%20delicious%20meal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20first%20thing%20one%20notices%20when%20walking%20into%20ChocolaTree%20are%20shelves%20of%20raw%20products%20that%20are%20made%20on%20the%20spot,%20such%20as%20crackers,%20kale%20chips%20and%20nori%20snacks.%20I%20thought%20that%20the%20decor%20looked%20inviting%20and%20warm.%20I%20was%20particularly%20drawn%20to%20the%20ginormous%20display%20of%20chocolates%20-%20apparently%20their%20specialty%20-%20but%20more%20on%20that%20later.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20started%20off%20with%20a%20Carrot%20Ginger%20Soup%20made%20with%20carrots,%20avocado,%20coconut%20and%20ginger%20which%20was%20tasty.%20It%20came%20with%20Pumpkin%20Chia%20Crackers%20that%20I%20thought%20was%20an%20interesting%20addition.%20They%20were%20also%20quite%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENext%20came%20our%20entrees...We%20shared%20a%20Falafel%20Platter:%20Sprouted%20Falafel%20Balls,%20tomato,%20cucumber%20(or%20in%20this%20case%20zucchini),%20red%20onion%20and%20mixed%20greens,%20with%20a%20side%20of%20Cream%20Garlic%20Dill%20Dip,%20Veggie%20Hummus%20and%20their%20famous%20Onion%20Bread.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Dip%20and%20Hummus%20were%20ok,%20although%20I%20couldn't%20really%20get%20myself%20to%20enjoy%20them,%20trying%20to%20sneak%20spoonfuls%20around%20the%20pools%20of%20oil.%20The%20Balls%20were%20so%20intensely%20flavored%20that%20I%20only%20reluctantly%20ate%20mine.%20I%20was%20certainly%20glad%20that%20I%20was%20sharing%20the%20plate%20with%20Don%20and%20didn't%20have%20to%20eat%20the%20whole%20thing%20by%20myself!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20also%20ordered%20a%20Veggie%20Sandwich:%20Creamy%20Garlic%20Herb%20Pate,%20Tomato,%20Avo,%20Red%20Onion,%20Sprouts%20&%20Spring%20Greens%20on%20a%20Onion%20Flat%20Bread.%20The%20bread%20was%20tasty%20and%20pliable%20which%20made%20for%20a%20good%20sandwich.%20However%20I%20found%20again%20the%20flavors%20overwhelming%20and%20by%20the%20time%20I%20finished%20my%20half%20I%20was%20glad%20there%20wasn't%20any%20more.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20sign%20at%20the%20entrance%20proclaimed%20that%20they%20are%20famous%20for%20their%20raw%20desserts,%20so%20that%20sounded%20a%20little%20more%20promising.%20Their%20display%20was%20quite%20varied%20and%20rather%20impressive:%20Pecan%20Pie,%20Coconut%20Pie,%20German%20Chocolate%20Cake...%20We%20went%20for%20the%20Tiramisu%20which%20I%20thought%20was%20very%20good.%20It%20had%20some%20kind%20of%20almond%20flavored%20cake%20base,%20a%20light%20Irish%20moss%20cream%20and%20some%20kind%20of%20other%20topping.%20I%20just%20wished%20that%20the%20coffee%20flavor%20had%20been%20more%20pronounced%20since%20it's%20one%20of%20the%20distinctive%20features%20of%20traditional%20tiramisu.%20It%20came%20drizzled%20with%20a%20young%20coconut%20cream%20which%20looked%20uncannily%20like%20the%20SAD%20white%20cream%20I%20used%20to%20pipe%20on%20top%20of%20bake-your-own%20Pillsbury's%20Apple%20Turnovers.%20(Yah,%20yah,%20I%20know...%20Not%20a%20happy%20thought!%20lol)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20the%20waitress'%20suggestion%20we%20also%20had%20a%20(gigantic!)%20piece%20of%20Chocolate%20Ganache.%20The%20texture%20was%20very%20firm%20and%20I%20was%20surprised%20to%20later%20discover%20that%20it%20only%20contained%20coconut%20oil%20and%20no%20cacao%20butter.%20The%20flavor%20would%20have%20been%20good%20except%20that%20I%20could%20detect%20a%20rancid%20aftertaste%20(probably%20from%20the%20coconut%20oil)%20which%20sorta%20ruined%20the%20experience.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBelieve%20it%20or%20not,%20neither%20Don%20nor%20I%20could%20finish%20our%20desserts%20(that's%20something%20almost%20unheard%20of!%20lol)%20and%20had%20them%20wrapped%20up%20to%20go.%20We%20also%20chose%20a%20couple%20of%20chocolates%20from%20their%20very%20large%20selection.%20Someone%20told%20me%20that%20they%20are%20the%20biggest%20importer%20of%20raw%20cacao%20in%20the%20US%20and%20I%20can%20believe%20it!%20I%20have%20to%20say%20though%20that%20their%20choccies%20are%20ridiculously%20expensive:%20$2%20for%20the%20teeny%20small%20ones%20and%20$3%20for%20the%20slightly%20larger%20cups.%20Ouch!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20would%20have%20liked%20to%20try%20a%20few%20but%20in%20keeping%20with%20our%20budget%20we%20just%20took%20a%20couple.%20After%20much%20debating%20we%20decided%20on%20one%20made%20with%20crystal%20manna%20and%20one%20with%20rose%20essential%20oil.%20We%20also%20took%20them%20along%20to%20enjoy%20later.%20I%20guess%20there's%20no%20easy%20way%20to%20say%20this%20but%20we%20weren't%20impressed%20with%20them%20AT%20ALL.%20While%20they%20looked%20beautiful%20and%20they've%20certainly%20got%20the%20tempering%20process%20down%20pat%20(as%20they%20held%20well%20at%20room%20temperature%20like%20traditional%20chocolates),%20the%20flavors%20were%20rather%20blah%20and%20unbalanced.%20I%20thought%20that%20they%20overdid%20the%20rose%20essence%20which%20was%20way%20too%20overpowering.%20Not%20what%20you'd%20expect%20from%20master%20chocolatiers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20on%20the%20topic%20of%20their%20chocolates%20I%20guess%20I%20should%20also%20mention%20that%20when%20we%20visited%20Jozzie%20in%20Oregon%20she%20shared%20with%20us%20some%20L.O.V.E.%20cups%20that%20ChocolaTree%20sells%20via%20The%20Raw%20Food%20World.%20We%20hadn't%20been%20swooned%20by%20these%20either;%20in%20fact,%20the%20pecans%20on%20top%20of%20one%20of%20them%20were%20clearly%20rancid.%20(Someone%20local%20confirmed%20that%20rancid%20nuts%20has%20indeed%20been%20an%20issue%20with%20their%20food.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20lastly,%20before%20we%20left%20we%20bought%20a%20package%20of%20their%20Curry%20Wraps%20as%20we're%20starting%20to%20run%20seriously%20low%20on%20cracker%20supplies.%20While%20these%20were%20pliable%20they%20tasted%20as%20though%20someone%20had%20dropped%20the%20bottle%20of%20curry%20powder%20into%20the%20mixture;%20a%20very%20strong%20yet%20unrefined%20flavor.%20Of%20course%20that%20could%20have%20been%20just%20that%20particular%20batch%20I%20suppose...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20hindsight%20I%20see%20that%20our%20intuition%20had%20been%20right%20not%20to%20eat%20at%20ChocolaTree%20the%20first%20time.%20With%20all%20the%20restaurants%20that%20have%20had%20to%20close%20down%20in%20this%20time%20of%20economic%20struggle,%20it%20is%20a%20mystery%20to%20me%20that%20a%20place%20like%20that%20can%20stay%20in%20business.%20I'm%20also%20surprised%20that%20there%20is%20a%20demand%20for%20their%20products%20and%20chocolates%20locally%20and%20beyond.%20Granted%20that%20we've%20sampled%20a%20very%20small%20amount%20of%20the%20food%20they%20prepare,%20but%20virtually%20none%20of%20the%20dozen%20items%20or%20so%20we%20tried%20wowed%20us.%20Or%20perhaps%20it's%20just%20that%20our%20taste%20buds%20are%20very%20much%20misaligned?%20In%20any%20case,%20we're%20sorry%20we%20have%20to%20say%20that%20we%20certainly%20won't%20be%20eating%20there%20again!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
