Spiraling red, white, and blue create a whimsical, almost hypnotizing appearance. Then, when you sink your teeth in, you discover the softest, most tender sugar cookie in the country. That’s what we’re good at in America, being the best. We’re winners, and winners deserve cookies.
And guess what, winners? No matter what your baking level is, you can win at making these cookies because they’re super simple. I’ve even got a photo breakdown below to walk you through it. You can bake a batch of my Patriotic Pinwheel Cookies like a pro, and then show off your skills at a 4th of July BBQ or picnic. All your friends and family will recognize your superior patriotism and salute you. Then they’ll devour these soft, scrumptious cookies.
With these colorful cuties, you can show your American pride and eat it too. Is that weird? Who cares; this is America, and anything goes. We’ve got the freedom to do what we please, including eating a dozen of these cloud-like cookies in one sitting.
God bless America!
A Few Tips Before You Get Cooking:
The key to making these cookies soft is to take them out when they’re set. Don’t wait for them to brown; they’ll be dried out by then.
Stop by tomorrow to see something extra special to do with these cookies.
Add some sparkly sprinkles to make these even more festive.
This makes a big batch, so feel free to cut it in half or freeze some of the dough.
These are a great treat to bring to outdoor celebrations because they don’t need to be refrigerated, and they won’t melt in the heat.
Patriotic Pinwheel Cookies
Yield – about 3 dozen cookies
Cookie recipe from Foodbeast
Ingredients:
For the cookies
- 4 ½ cups all purpose flour
- 4 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 3 sticks butter, room temperature
- 1 3/4 cups sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 5 teaspoons vanilla extract
Red food dye
Blue food dye
Directions:
1. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. In an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, scraping down the bowl after each addition. Beat in vanilla until blended. Gradually add flour mixture and beat on low just until incorporated.
2. Separate dough into three equal portions. Mix red dye into one portion until evenly distributed, adding more as necessary to reach desired vibrancy. Do the same with the blue food dye to a second portion. Leave the third portion white. Flatten out the thirds to 2 inch thickness then stack one on top of the other.
3. Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Take the longest side and roll as tightly as possible like a burrito. Cover and chill at least 1 hour.
4. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
5. Slice cookie log into 1/8-inch thick rounds. Place on baking sheets and bake 8-10 minutes, or until puffed and set, NOT browned yet. Let cool for 2 minutes before transferring to cooling rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
