Receta Review: The Custaroonery (Gigi Gaerlan Custaroons)
During the first two times that Boyet and I went to St. Pio Chapel, I failed to remind myself to check out the famous custaroons by Gigi Gaerlan. But on our third time, I made sure to set a mental reminder so I wouldn’t miss it again. We arrived too early for the 5:30 PM mass so Boyet and I decided to drop by the store. We were then greeted by a very cheerful staff member. I checked out their price list and was surprised how affordable the items are. Given the online raves that I have read, I wasn’t expecting it to be affordable.
Guests can choose from two variants of custaroons – original (PHP35) and cheese (PHP40). Boyet and I decided to try both. My husband is not the biggest fan of anything sweet so I was surprised with his reaction when he had his first bite of the custaroons. He could not stop saying how good it is!
Custaroon is called such because it is combination of custard and macaroon. You’ll get the chewy texture of a macaroon on top and that soft and gooey custard at the bottom. The macaroon and custard combination is a match made in heaven. Super duper over sarap! Para kaming sirang plaka kakasabi ng, “Grabe! Ang sarap!!!” =))
Aside from the excellent quality of the custaroons, I couldn’t help but notice how chic the packaging is. Our custaroons were initially wrapped in a small baby pink paper bag. And because I want the entire family to taste the custaroons, I decided to buy a box to take home. 30 pieces of bite-size custaroons cost PHP210. It came in a powder blue box with the same chic design as the pink paper bag. Even the paper cups look so elegant. :)
Until now, I am still dreaming of these delectable custaroons. It’s as if you go to St. Pio Chapel to get a renewed sense of faith and happier taste buds. =)
