Dear Food Diary:
Right before leaving for Japan this summer, my friend J and I had a great get together over sake and Japanese style tapas at SakaMai.
Their Egg on Egg on Egg has been on my mind ever since (even after coming back from Japan). Definitely one the highlights of our meal.
We didn’t have reservations, so we got seated in the front area with high stools. Nice and relaxed atmosphere. Casual.
Along the narrow dining tables there’s also couches in the back and a beautifully stocked bar.
We started off with a Kuchinashi aka their take on the sweet and fruity lychee martini. Made with my favorite nigiri sake (unfiltered).

.%20Definitely%20one%20the%20highlights%20of%20our%20meal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20didn%E2%80%99t%20have%20reservations,%20so%20we%20got%20seated%20in%20the%20front%20area%20with%20high%20stools.%20Nice%20and%20relaxed%20atmosphere.%20Casual.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlong%20the%20narrow%20dining%20tables%20there%E2%80%99s%20also%20couches%20in%20the%20back%20and%20a%20beautifully%20stocked%20bar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20started%20off%20with%20a%20Kuchinashi%20aka%20their%20take%20on%20the%20sweet%20and%20fruity%20lychee%20martini.%20Made%20with%20my%20favorite%20nigiri%20sake%20(unfiltered).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFlights%20of%20sake%20were%20tempting%20too,%20but%20J%20and%20I%20had%20just%20come%20from%20a%20happy%20hour%20networking%20event%20and%20my%20tolerance%20have%20dropped%20dramatically.%20Plus,%20my%20Asian%20glow%20never%20ceases%20to%20call%20me%20out.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERenkon%20Chips%20aka%20Lotus%20Root%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20are%20always%20a%20favorite%20of%20mine.%20Lightly%20seasoned.%20Perfect%20snack%20with%20drinks.%20Superior%20to%20potato%20chips%20in%20my%20book,%20because%20aside%20from%20the%20crunch,%20there%E2%80%99s%20also%20a%20sweetness%20at%20the%20end.%20I%20hope%20they%E2%80%99ll%20find%20a%20way%20to%20package%20these%20and%20sell%20in%20family%20sizes.%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20dietician,%20but%20I%20believe%20they%20are%20healthier%20than%20potato?%20Any%20food%20police%20here?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKanpachi%20%E2%80%93%20Amberjack%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20meaty,%20buttery%20fish%20is%20brightened%20with%20shiso%20strings,%20myoga%20(aka%20Japanese%20ginger%20%E2%80%93%20a%20milder%20young%20ginger%20flower%20bud)%20and%20%20my%20favorite%20yuzu%20for%20that%20sweet%20citrus%20touch.%20Lightly%20brushed%20with%20soy%20and%20a%20dab%20of%20fresh%20wasabi.%20A%20mouthful%20of%20flavors%20that%20are%20big%20on%20their%20own,%20but%20in%20this%20case%20worked%20harmoniously%20together.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20to%20the%20highlight%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEgg%20on%20Egg%20on%20Egg%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServed%20on%20uni%20shells%20(though,%20I%20think%20they%E2%80%99ve%20switched%20to%20porcelain%20faux%20uni%20bowls,%20which%20sorta%20takes%20away%20from%20the%20experience).%20Anyways,%20on%20my%20visit%20the%20uni%20shell%20really%20brought%20the%20dish%20to%20live.%20Sexy%20as%20can%20be.%20All%20of%20my%20favorite%20ingredients%20in%20one%20spoonful.%20I%20love%20uni,%20but%20this%20is%20just%20another%20level%20of%20indulgence.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESoft%20scrambled%20eggs%20topped%20with%20sweet%20creamy%20sea%20urchin%20and%20as%20if%20that%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20enough,%20a%20layer%20of%20sturgeon%20caviar.%20This%20is%20unquestionably%20SakaMai%E2%80%99s%20Signature%20Dish.%20Melt%20in%20your%20mouth%20richness%20with%20pops%20of%20briny%20and%20salty%20sea%20pearls.%20Eggs%20will%20never%20be%20the%20same%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChawanmushi%20with%20Duck%20and%20Foie%20Gras%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%9CTea%20cup%20steam%E2%80%9D%20which%20is%20a%20Japanese%20version%20of%20egg%20custard%20is%20rather%20popular%20throughout%20Japan.%20I%20had%20really%20good%20renditions%20during%20my%20stay,%20but%20SakaMai%E2%80%99s%20twist%20was%20pretty%20unforgettable.%20Silky%20egg%20with%20some%20gamey%20duck%20and%20rich%20creamy%20foie.%20Deep%20flavor%20combo.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20not%20on%20their%20menu%20at%20the%20moment,%20but%20one%20of%20the%20owners%20told%20me%20it%20would%20return%20for%20the%20cooler%20weather,%20which%20makes%20sense.%20This%20is%20one%20of%20those%20dishes%20that%20just%20warms%20your%20belly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECroquette%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELobster%20and%20Iberico%20lardo%20de%20Bellota%20is%20a%20mouthful%20just%20to%20pronounce%20it%20all,%20but%20this%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20as%20umami%20filled%20as%20I%20expected.%20Maybe%20two%20positive%20ingredients%20made%20it%20a%20negative,%20canceling%20all%20that%20beautiful%20flavor%20from%20each%20other?%20It%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20bad%20by%20any%20means.%20The%20miso%20and%20lobster%20bisque%20foam%20were%20tasty,%20but%20it%20just%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20that%20memorable.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoasted%20Bone%20Marrow%20&%20Steak%20Tartare%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20theory%20it%20was%20great%20and%20the%20steak%20tartare%20was%E2%80%A6%20But%20for%20some%20reason,%20the%20marrow%20in%20blob%20cube%20form%20just%20didn%E2%80%99t%20do%20it%20for%20me.%20I%20like%20marrow%20to%20be%20more%20like%20a%20spread,%20not%20a%20reminder%20of%20pieces%20of%20fat.%20Is%20that%20just%20me?%20But%20it%20just%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20as%20sexy%20and%20appealing%20to%20the%20eye.%20Texture%20wise%20it%20didn%E2%80%99t%20melt%20immediately,%20it%20was%20almost%20like%20I%20had%20to%20pop%20it%20in%20my%20mouth,%20which%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20as%20pleasant.%20But%20the%20toast%20and%20tartare%20were%20well%20seasoned.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20got%20a%20seasonal%20dessert%20of%20mont%20blanc%20(chestnut%20paste)%20with%20rice%20pudding%20and%20ice%20cream.%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20remember%20exactly,%20but%20I%20do%20recall%20it%20being%20really%20
