Receta Sautéed Chard with Tomatoes; meanderings
When I first planted chard I planted Rainbow Chard…. Lots of different colors of stems and leaves.
I got the seeds in the U.S.
The next year I saw the seeds here in France. The packet was listed as an ‘ornamental’ and I got enough seeds for a 3 foot row.
The following year I ordered seeds from on online company, but the only had ‘Lipstick Chard, or red-stemmed chard.
The stems are skinny and the leaves big, which is the opposite of the chard the French prefer with wide white stems and skinny leaves.
I cook the stems just a bit longer than the leaves, usually with the onions…
Sautéed Chard with Tomatoes
Total time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
- 8oz (240gr) chard, leaves and stems thinly sliced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 large tomato, chopped (mine was yellow)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- handful fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 2 tsp olive oil
Instructions:
Heat oil in a large skillet. Add onion and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes.
Add the garlic, chard stems and stir-fry over medium heat 3 minutes.
Add the leaves, basil and tomato. Stir and turn until the leaves wilt and it all fits into the skillet.
Reduce heat to low and cook until all is tender, another 5 – 6 minutes, stirring frequently.
The next room we worked on was the den / TV room.
We needed a place to relax.
It had been used as a work room and, of course, storage room, but then every room was a storage room.
It was a bit easier because it actually had a flat floor. The floor wasn’t on the same level as either of the adjoining floors but that was also easy.
He built a step.
He painted the radiator back so when he built the cover it would blend in.
It’s much easier to re-do a room that doesn’t have cabinets, appliances and plumbing….
The walls were stripped, patched, re-papered and trimmed.
We managed to move the living room furniture in by Christmas. It was a bit crowded, but we needed the furniture out of the living room as that was the next room to work on.
Eventually, that furniture was put in its final spot and our TV chairs moved into position.
The book cases eventually went into the dining room, but that was a few years later.
The tall cupboard in the corner was refinished (not in this photo) and currently mon mari is building a stand for the TV so there will be final photos of this room sometime in the next few weeks.
Last year he re-did the chimney front.
We use the fireplace a lot and it’s not the most efficient as for as the smoke is concerned. White was not the best choice for above the mantel….
After a few winters it was various shades of gray.
We couldn’t clean it so he did what he always does – covered it in wood.
This is one of those rooms that we keep thinking is finished, but then he does a bit more.
The previous owners lived in this room…. It had the only working fireplace and we he think some of the cooking was done in it. There were hooks inside for hanging pots. When we had it cleaned for the first time the chimney sweep actually put a ladder up inside the chimney and climbed up to clean it.
It’s bigger than it looks – the only fireplace we’ve ever had that Santa would fit in.
