My husband and I just came back from a road trip where we drove our new-to-us car from Colorado to Georgia. Along the way, we ate some wonderful meals and drank some marvelous cocktails. What I love about traveling is that I’m inspired to recreate dishes and drinks I’ve had on the road. One such drink was a grapefruit cocktail I tried at the Westin in Kansas City, Missouri. It was sweet and refreshing though a little too boozy for an everyday drink. (After two, I was out like a light!)
It was somewhat similar to the Sauvignon Blanc Paloma Blanca recipe made with Frontera Wines Sauvignon Blanc, sugar, and grapefruit and lime juices. However, I wanted to created my own version of something I could sip in the evenings without having to go to bed before the sun went down. So I created two versions of the Paloma Blanca – a frozen fruit slushy and a skinny version with seltzer.
Frontera Wines are perfect for cocktails!
Speaking of trends, I’m seeing people’s love of wine and cocktails changing a bit. We all love to imbibe, but we have to get up the next day for work, too! So, I find that many people are lightening up their wine by serving it over ice or mixing it with fruit, juices and seltzers – especially in the summer. Sangrias are very popular as are wine cocktails.
In keeping with this trend, Frontera Wines, the #1 Southern American wine brand sold in the United States, developed seven wine cocktail recipes. Six Frontera Cocktail Recipes are perfect for summer or year-round and one, a mulled wine, is perfect for cooler weather. These cocktail recipes cover a large range of Frontera Wines – Cab Merlot, Moscato, Chardonnay, Carmenere, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. The wine cocktails are easy to make and don’t contain any hard to find ingredients. Like the rest of Frontera’s line, you’ll surely find a wine cocktail recipe that fits your tastes or what you’re serving during parties or large family gatherings.
What’s also terrific about Frontera Wines, besides their taste and quality, is their reasonable price. You can find them at most grocery or liquor stores at $10.99-$8.99 for 1.5L size, and $5.99-4.99 for 750ml. (Frontera is one of Excelsior Wines' many wonderful wine brands. )

Sauvignon Blanc Paloma Blanca Slushie Cocktail
While I like the original Sauvignon Blanc Paloma Blanca cocktail recipe, I love slushie cocktails even more since they’re so much fun to sip through a straw. They're perfect for summer, too!
For the Sauvignon Blanc Paloma Blanca Slushie Cocktail, instead of freezing the grapefruit juice and blending it into a slushie along with the other ingredients, I froze pieces of ruby red grapefruit overnight. That way you get a bit of fiber along with your cocktail. I cut back on some of the calories by using stevia instead of sugar, too.
Skinny Sauvignon Blanc Paloma Blanca Cocktail
I love freezing wine in an ice ball maker mold and then plunking it in a big glass of flavored seltzer water with a garnish of something from my herb garden. This way I can have the delicious taste of Frontera Wine in a Skinny Sauvignon Blanc Paloma Blanca Cocktail – as it slowly melts into the seltzer and juice mixture – but not as many calories as in a full glass of wine.
You can find ice ball maker molds online. (I got mine at Marshall’s.) If you don’t want to go through the expense, fill a three ounce Dixie cup with Frontera Sauvignon Blanc, freeze, then pop it out of the cup when you’re ready to make your Skinny Sauvignon Blanc Paloma Blanca Cocktail. Or you can freeze up a bunch for a party, then keep the frozen wine cubes in a ziplock freezer baggie until it’s time to make up a batch of Skinny Sauvignon Blanc Paloma Blanca Cocktails for your guests.
