Receta Secret Recipe Club Reveal! Orange Creamsicle Scones
I love orange flavored anything for the
most part, yet I don't eat it often. I'm not sure why. I used to love orange
chicken way back when, and I'm still a huge fan of orange cake, curd, or sauce.
I made an orange pancake sauce one time that was pretty awesome. When I ran
across a recipe for these orange creamsicle scones I knew they were a must try.
Orange is delicious but anything with "creamsicle" has to be made,
and soon.
If you've never heard of The Secret Recipe
Club before, then you can find out more information by clicking here.
The idea is that all of the members are assigned a blog (secretly of course!)
and each member can peruse their assigned blog to find something that they
would like to make, or several things to make in the future. The assigned blogs
are kept completely secret until the reveal day and time, then you get to see
who had your blog, and you get to post about what you made from your assigned
blog. It's a lot of fun, and a great way to discover new blogs and recipes.
Some of my other reveals include a No Bake Almond Cheesecake, Pumpkin Doughnuts, Jack Black Bean Dip, and Spicy Soy Chorizo Soft Tacos with Chile-Lime Cream.
This time around I was assigned to Kitchen Trial and Error. Kate is behind all of the delicious stuff that is posted and I was pretty excited to peruse her site. There are tons of delicious looking recipes! So many in fact, that I bookmarked a bunch and even made two of them already :). I made the Orange Creamsicle Scones for the reveal, and the Peanut Butter Granola Crispy Bars for fun. The PBG Crispy Bars are soo good. I did put in two tablespoons less of the brown sugar though. They didn't hold together that well (potentially because of the sugar difference, brown sugar is sticky) but they were so good none of us cared. Who needs a bar shape when you can just pop a piece in your mouth and keep walking! I also used Cocoa Krispies instead of Rice Krispies, and regular chocolate chips instead of minis (I would go mini next time like I was supposed to).
I thought these Strawberry Rolls tooked amazing for a Sunday morning breakfast and they're on the table in under a hour (and a third of that is just cooling time). The Beer Battered Green Beans with Spicy Dipping Sauce has also been bookmarked for the future. I don't fry food often, when we do we make a big production out of it and joke that it's like the Texas State Fair, since they're known for fried foods so much. We just call ours "Fry-Day" and it is getting to be further and fewer between because we know we should be eating healthier.
The Orange Creamsicle Scones are definitely worth the time they take to make (and it really doesn't take that much)! I feel like you could also skip the glaze and serve it with some whipped butter with orange zest mixed in and it would be another form of perfect for breakfast, because I'm sure enough not waiting until lunch or the afternoon to eat these. The recipe makes 8 fullsize scones, but you could also make 16 smaller ones if you want to, why not! They would bake for a little less time though. In the original recipe Kate bakes them for 15 minutes but in my oven 17 worked better. They were golden brown around the edges and perfect on the inside. They were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, I sort of loved them. I hope you do too!
- Orange Creamsicle Scones

- Ingredients:
- - 1 ¾ cups flour
- - 2 tablespoons sugar
- - 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon + 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- - pinch of salt
- - zest of half an orange
- - ½ cup unsalted butter, cold
- - ½ cup milk
- - 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
- - 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- for the glaze:
- - ½ cup powdered sugar
- - ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- - 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375F. and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat.
2. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest together.
3.
Cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs
about the size of peas using a pastry blender or your fingers.
4. Add the milk, orange juice, and vanilla extract and mix just until combined, being careful not to overmix the dough.
5.
Turn the dough out onto the baking sheet and use your hands to form it
into a rough circle or square. cut into about 8 equal pieces.
6. Bake for about 15-17 minutes then transfer to a cooling rack and cool completely before drizzling with the glaze.
7. To make the glaze, whisk the sugar, vanilla, and orange juice until smooth.
*Once
the scones are cool, drizzle with the glaze. Eat immediately or let the
glaze set at least one hour before storing. The scones are best eaten
the day they are made. If you are going to store them, avoid air tight
containers as the glaze will soften and get soggy.
