For some reason it seems that everybody I know is having roofing work done this week. We had three early storms blow through here in the last 10 days and it looks like it's going to be a long sloppy wet cold Winter. So, in this teeny tiny break in the weather, everyone's taking advantage and all of a sudden it's Hammertime!

%20at%20unexpected%20times.%20Just%20another%20charming%20sign%20that%20Fall%20has%20arrived%20in%20the%20sleepy%20country%20town%20of%20Sonoma.%20Please%20Hammer,%20Don't%20Hurt%20'Em!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENothing%20I%20like%20better%20with%20script%20pressure%20dangling%20over%20my%20head%20and%20a%20Manager%20that%20haunts%20my%20Facebook%20posts%20(get%20to%20work!)%20than%20a%20whole%20freaking%20lot%20of%20hammering.%20Of%20course%20I%20like%20running%20for%20buckets%20even%20less,%20so%20there%20you%20are.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20with%20all%20the%20pounding%20and%20hammering%20I%20really%20feel%20like%20we're%20battening%20down%20for%20a%20long%20winters'%20nap%20around%20here,%20I%20got%20into%20a%20real%20autumnal%20mood%20this%20afternoon%20and%20grabbed%20the%20first%20Brussels%20sprouts%20of%20the%20season%20when%20I%20went%20to%20the%20market.%20It%20just%20felt%20like%20a%20Brussels%20sprouts%20sort%20of%20day,%20overcast,%20gloomy%20threatening%20(but%20not%20delivering)%20rain.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20was%20no%20Indian%20food%20cooked%20here%20today,%20as%20I%20am%20planning%20an%20early%20Dwiali%20dinner%20this%20weekend%20for%20Berkeley%20cousins%20and%20there%20will%20be%20lots%20of%20exotic%20treats.%20Therefore%20during%20the%20week%20I'm%20keeping%20it%20simple%20and%20these%20sprouts%20were%20paired%20up%20with%20a%20simple%20roast%20chicken%20and%20applesauce%20which%20is%20%20all%20one%20really%20needs%20when%20fall%20is%20in%20the%20air.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOkay,%20so%20it's%20pretty%20clear%20that%20I%20love%20Brussels%20sprouts%20cause%20they%20give%20me%20a%20whole%20Thanksgivingy%20%22over%20the%20river%20and%20through%20the%20woods%22%20kind%20of%20thrill.%20Alan%20not%20so%20much.%20In%20fact%20I%20think%20that%20a%20lot%20of%20the%20vegetable%20varieties%20that%20Alan's%20has%20had%20have%20been%20since%20he's%20known%20me,%20and%20I've%20known%20him%20a%20long%20time.%20I%20met%20Alan%20right%20after%20his%20college%20graduation%20(he's%20two%20years%20older%20than%20me)%20and%20when%20we%20first%20met,%20his%20two%20favorite%20vegetables%20were%20fries%20and%20potato%20chips.%20Since%20then%20he's%20come%20to%20love%20and%20appreciate%20all%20the%20vegetable%20varieties,%20but%20there%20are%20still%20a%20few%20hesitations...okra%20is%20a%20big%20one..and%20then%20there%20were%20brussels%20sprouts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%22How%20about%20some%20brussels%20sprouts?%22%20I%20would%20say...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(OH%20FREAKING%20GREAT!%20NOW%20THE%20POWER%20JUST%20WENT%20OUT!!!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAhem..as%20I%20was%20saying...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%22How%20are%20you%20going%20to%20fix%20them?%22%20he%20would%20ask%20warily.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(what%20do%20you%20think%20I'm%20freaking%20trying%20to%20poison%20you%20after%20all%20these%20years?)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEarly%20on%20I%20learned%20the%20correct%20answer.%20One%20word.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%22Bacon%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYes,%20what%20I've%20found%20is%20that%20most%20men%20will%20eat%20anything%20that%20is%20wrapped%20in,%20or%20adjacent%20to%20bacon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOkra??%20Nooooooo,%20Okra%20with%20bacon.?%20Big%20yes!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECollards?%20Noooooooo.%20Collards%20with%20bits%20of%20bacon.%20By%20all%20means%20yes!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGive%20them%20bacon%20and%20they%20will%20eat%20it.%20It's%20kind%20of%20Similar%20to%20how%20I%20used%20to%20give%20the%20dog%20worm%20medicine...%20wrap%20it%20in%20bacon...%20Sold!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20for%20Brussels%20sprouts,%20fast%20and%20easy...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBrussels%20Sprouts%20With%20Bacon%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20what%20to%20do:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWash%201%20lb%20of%20Brussels%20sprouts.%20Drain%20them%20and%20cut%20off%20the%20woody%20stems.%20remove%20loose%20%20funky%20leaves.%20Cut%20them%20in%20half%20lengthwise.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20a%20%20large%20pan%20or%20skillet%20.%20When%20it's%20hot,%20toss%20in%202%20chopped%20strips%20of%20bacon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20am%20being%20very%20very%20bad,%20I%20sometimes%20put%20on%20my%20Paula%20Deen%20pants%20and%20toss%20in%20a%20tiny%20(I'm%20serious%20here%20tiny%20is%20not%20%22ironic%22,%20or%20sarcastic,%20I%20mean%20a%20very%20very%20small%20amount%20of%20butter)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20the%20bacon%20begins%20to%20cook%20down%20and%20there%20are%20bacon%20drippings,%20toss%20in%20the%20Brussels%20sprouts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir%20fry%20them%20on%20a%20high%20heat%20until%20they%20start%20to%20brown,%20then%20turn%20down%20the%20heat%20to%20low,%20slap%20a%20lid%20on%20things%20and%20cook%20them%20for%20another%2010%20minutes%20or%20so%20until%20they're%20tender.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShake%20the%20pan%20every%20now%20and%20then%20to%20make%20sure%20nothing%20is%20sticking%20or%20burning%20as%20they%20braise.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESalt%20to%20taste.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBefore%20serving%20scatter%20a%20chopped%20handful%20of%20California%20walnuts%20over%20the%20dish%20and%20stir%20them%20in.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUsually%20I%20make%20this%20with%20bacon%20I've%20cured%20and%20smoked%20myself,%20but%20I'm%20behind%20on%20my%20bacon%20mak
