I promise I will post a recipe soon but in the meantime, our latest wildlife spotting was too good not to share.
The other morning, I was out in the garden with James, my three-year-old, when I noticed that something had been digging in the raised bed we planted with garlic last fall. It's not unusual for a squirrel or chipmunk to wreak havoc but when I took a closer look, I noticed that the dirt was all mounded up - like someone had added a couple shovels full to it.
That's when I saw a large reptilian head nestled in the soft, brown earth. My first thought was, "Is that an IGUANA?!" and then I quickly realized that it was a snapping turtle.

%20are%20native%20to%20this%20area%20and%20are%20known%20for%20their%20fierce,%20even%20combative%20dispositions.%20I%20once%20tried%20to%20help%20one%20across%20the%20road%20to%20prevent%20it%20from%20getting%20run%20over.%20Once.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20used%20a%20stick%20to%20prod%20it%20gently%20from%20behind%20but%20it%20whipped%20its%20head%20around%20and%20shot%20it's%20neck%20out%20about%20a%20foot%20at%20me%20with%20a%20vicious%20snap%20of%20its%20jaws.%20I%20dropped%20the%20stick%20and%20decided%20I'd%20just%20let%20it%20take%20its%20chances%20on%20the%20road.%20So%20when%20I%20found%20this%20fine%20old%20lady%20getting%20ready%20to%20lay%20a%20clutch%20of%20eggs%20in%20our%20garden,%20I%20quickly%20moved%20both%20kids%20to%20higher%20ground%20because%20their%20behavior%20around%20parking%20lots%20indicates%20that%20their%20instinct%20for%20self-preservation%20is%20a%20tad%20underdeveloped.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHer%20first%20response%20to%20our%20presence%20was%20to%20dig%20herself%20deeper%20into%20the%20dirt.%20An%20understandable%20reaction%20but%20not%20ideal%20from%20our%20point%20of%20view%20--%20the%20last%20thing%20we%20need%20is%20dozens%20of%20baby%20snappers%20hatching%20out%20of%20our%20garlic%20and%20then%20coming%20back%20every%20year%20to%20lay%20their%20own%20eggs...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUnfortunately,%20moving%20a%20snapping%20turtle%20is%20not%20the%20easiest%20task.%20They%20are%20large,%20heavy%20and,%20unlike,%20most%20animals,%20they%20do%20not%20run%20from%20a%20threat.%20Instead,%20they%20prefer%20to%20turn%20and%20face%20it%20head%20on.%20So%20every%20time%20I%20would%20try%20to%20prod%20her%20forward%20with%20my%20long%20stick,%20she'd%20turn%20herself%20around%20and%20snap%20at%20the%20stick.%20She%20also%20let%20out%20a%20low,%20loud%20hiss%20that%20got%20her%20point%20across%20in%20no%20uncertain%20terms%20and%20gave%20me%20shivers.%20What%20a%20magnificent,%20scary%20beastie!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEventually,%20we%20managed%20to%20prod/lift%20her%20out%20of%20the%20raised%20bed%20and%20get%20her%20onto%20a%20shovel.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20Rahm%20kind%20of%20gently%20shoveled%20her%20into%20this%20plastic%20garden%20cart%20I%20had%20laid%20down%20in%20front%20of%20her%20and%20tipped%20it%20back%20up,%20trapping%20her%20neatly%20inside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20he%20dragged%20her%20out%20of%20the%20garden%20to%20a%20marshy%20area%20on%20our%20property%20that%20is%20back%20in%20the%20direction%20of%20the%20pond%20next%20door.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20will%20be%20adding%20some%20additional%20fencing%20to%20the%20part%20of%20the%20garden%20where%20she%20came%20in%20as%20we'd%20prefer%20not%20to%20have%20her%20back%20again%20and%20would%20also%20hate%20to%20waste%20her%20time%20when%20she%20could%20be%20finding%20a%20more%20hospitable%20location%20for%20her%20nursery.%20The%20incident%20left%20a%20bit%20of%20a%20mess%20but%20we%20replanted%20the%20garlic%20and%20are%20hoping%20it%20will%20make%20a%20full%20recovery.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlthough%20this%20was%20a%20bit%20too%20close%20for%20comfort%20for%20my%20taste,%20especially%20with%20the%20small%20humans%20running%20around,%20I%20will%20note%20that%20the%20boys%20were%20DELIGHTED%20by%20the%20whole%20incident.%20So%20much%20better%20than%20watching%20Nature%20shows%20on%20PBS%20(though%20we%20like%20those,%20too.)%20Naturally,%20I%20looked%20them%20up%20when%20I%20got%20inside.%20Here%20are%20my%20favorite%20snapper%20facts:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20look%20ancient%20because%20they%20are.%20Snapping%20turtles%20have%20been%20around%20in%20more%20or%20less%20the%20same%20form%20for%2040%20million%20years%20and%20used%20to%20hang%20with%20the%20dinosaurs%20(no%20relation).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20keep%20growing%20as%20long%20as%20they're%20alive%20and%20can%20get%20up%20to%20at%20least%2075%20pounds%20in%20the%20wild%20(heavier%20in%20captivity).%20They%20can%20live%20to%20at%20least%20100%20and%20one%20thing%20I%20read%20said%20they%20can%20live%20until%20170%20years%20by%20which%20time%20they%20must%20be%20the%20size%20of%20a%20small%20car.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20do%20not%20reach%20sexual%20maturity%20until%20they%20are%20between%2012-20%20years%20old%20-%20the%20further%20north%20you%20go,%20the%20longer%20it%20takes%20them%20to%20mature.%20That%20means%20the%20mom%20we%20met%20was%20probably%20at%20least%2015%20years%20old.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20sex%20of%20the%20baby%20turtles%20is%20determined%20by%20the%20temperature%20in%20the%20nest.%20Eggs%20maintained%20at%2068%C2%B0F%20produce%20only%20females;%20eggs%20maintained%20at%2070-72%C2%B0F%20produce%20both%20male%20and%20female%20turtles;%20and%20those%20incubated%20at%2073-75%C2%B0F%20produce%20only%20males.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20not%20ever%20pick%20up%20a%20snapping%20turtle%20(or%20any%20turtle)%20by%20its%20tail%20-%20you%20can%20do%20serious%20damage%20to%20it's%20vertebrae%20and%20spinal%20column%20(you%20can%20also%20get%20bitten).%20A%20good%20rule%20of%20thumb%20is%20not%20to%20pick%20up%20a%20snapping%20turtle...%20But%20if%20you%20do%20need%20to%20for%20some%20unimaginable%20reason,%20you%20can%20most%20safely%20(for%20you%20and%20the%20turtle)%20grab%20it%20underneath%20its%20carapace,%20above%20its%20back%20legs.%20Beware%20the%20head%20-%20they%20can%20really%20whip%20that%20thing%20around%20far.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20snapping%20turtle%20has%20been%20the%20state%20reptile%20of%20New%20York%20since%202006%20-%20who%20knew?!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELest%20you%20are%20thinking%20about%20bringing%20one%20home,%20I%20will%20leave%20you%20with%20my%20favorite%20sentence%20from%20the%20Wikipedia%20entry%20on%20snapping%20turtles,%20%22The%20common%20snapping%20turtle%20is%20not%20an%20ideal%20pet.%22%20I%20actually%20laughed%20out%20loud%20when%20I%20came%20to%20it.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
