Umm, you guys? I have a question.
But … I’m kind of afraid to ask it because I don’t want anyone to get riled up. Seriously, things could get pretty messy around here depending on your answer.
So, let’s all take a calming breath before we ponder this age old question … and then let’s be civil as we share our thoughts on the answer.
Okay, here goes … how do you top your hot dog?
And you thought I was exaggerating.
Debates over the best hot dog toppings can be practically brawl-inducing, often putting normally rational people on the hot dog defensive.
Are you a staunch supporter of mustard only like so many hot dog purists? Do you like to go crazy with multiple toppings, a la classic Chicago dog lovers? Or — do I dare say it? — do you put ketchup on your dog?
Hey, at least I didn’t ask whether a hot dog is a sandwich. That’s a whole ‘nother debate we don’t even want to get into!
For me, I used to be planted firmly in the mustard only camp. But, as my palate has changed over the years so has my take on hot dog toppings. A new favorite hot dog topping of mine? Spicy pickle relish … and the version I’ve created for this month’s Recipe ReDux theme, “DIY Kitchen Essentials,” is one I think you’ll love too.
Impossibly easy, yet way better than store bought, my spicy pickle relish combines a big jar of dill pickle chips and assorted veggies (you know, the ones with carrot, red pepper, and garlic too) with red onion, pepperoncini peppers, jalapeno peppers, and diced pimento for a perfect mix of tart and spice. It looks really pretty too, doesn’t it?
And this recipe comes just in time for your Memorial Day celebrations as well. Serve it a top grilled hot dogs, bratwurst, or just about any other grilled sausage, and you’ll have your guests saluting you in no time. So, go forth and grill … your spicy pickle relish is waiting!
Spicy Pickle Relish The perfect blend of tart and sweet, this spicy pickle relish is impossibly easy and much, much better than store bought! Ingredients:
1 medium red onion, peeled 1 26-ounce jar dill pickle chips with assorted vegetables, well-drained 1 12-ounce jar sliced pepperoncini peppers, well-drained ¼ cup diced pickled jalapeno peppers, well-drained ¼ cup diced pimentos, well-drained Salt to taste Directions:
Cut the red onion in half through the root, then slice each half into thin ribbons. Discard the root ends. Place the sliced onions in a bowl of cold water, and allow to soak for 10 minutes. In a large food processor, place the soaked onions, the dill pickles with their assorted vegetables, and the pepperoncini peppers. Process until finely chopped. Place the chopped pickle mixture in a large bowl. Add the jalapeno peppers and the pimentos. Stir the relish together until thoroughly incorporated. Season with salt to taste. Place the relish in a large jar, then allow to chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or until cold. Serve with hot dogs, bratwurst, or any other grilled sausages. Notes: Store any leftover relish in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. 3.3.3070
