Receta Starz Kitchen (Whampoa, Hong Kong)
by Ang Sarap

The first time I went here many years ago I was impressed with that large yacht or ship in the middle of the tall buildings, at first, I thought there was a dock there until I realized it was not in a sea of water but on a sea of concrete. The ship itself is just a design, in fact there is a mall inside it. Another great info to note is that this location is the largest private housing estate built on the site of the former Whampoa Dockyards. If that’s not impressive then try to visualize this, 19 hectares and consists of 12 complexes, there are 88 16-storey residential high-rise towers that consists of 10,431 apartment units. I think my best friend when he migrated in Hong Kong first lived here hence when I visited him earlier this year we went back here to reminisce the place as well as grab some dinner and the place of choice, Starz Kitchen. It’s the perfect place that time, I am in Hong Kong and I crave for some dim sum. Lots of pictures was taken, it was a long time since we had seen each other, luckily it was not busy so the waiters did not bother if we had ordered really slow and decided to have a small chat first. But while chatting as we saw other tables ordering their dishes we started to think we should start grabbing some food. This place is not a typical yum cha place so even at dinner they still serve yam cha favourites. We started with a House Specialty Shrimp Wonton Noodles in Soup (H$$ 32.00), we grabbed the small ones as I know we will have a dim sum feast. Served on normal sized bowl this dish may look plain but it definitely packs a lot of shrimp flavour, definitely worthy of calling it a house specialty. After that soup dumplings started raining on our table like the Steamed Pork Dumplings with Shrimp and Crab Roe (H$$ 36.00), Steamed Spare Ribs with Garlic Sauce (H$$ 32.00) and Steamed Shrimp Dumplings (H$$ 36.00). We also grabbed steamed buns like Steamed Barbecue Pork Bun (H$$ 32.00) and Steamed Egg Custard Bun (H$$ 32.00). All of the steamed delights were perfect in their own ways, cooked with the perfect texture and flavour. I love them all, I think if I have more space on my tummy I can easily eat twice the amount of all these dumplings presented to us. Then we also ordered some greens, we have to as we only have meat on our table, looks unhealthy so to balance it all out we had this Braised Chinese Kale with Shrimp Paste sauce in Casserole (HK$ 78.00). This is one tasty vegetable dish in fact it was meaty, those stems were delicious. And in a typical Filipino fashion this feast would not be complete without ordering some rice so we grabbed a big plate of Fried Rice. Then to finish everything we had some Steamed Sponge Cake (H$$ 32.00) for dessert and some traditional Iced Lemon Tea Hong Kong Style. I think it’s hard to find a bad Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong, this is what they do best, it’s like finding the worst pizza in Italy it barely happens as its their trade. I would definitely love going back here again and again, I can taste the freshness on the ingredients used, everything tastes clean and juicy. Definitely a highly recommend place.
