%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20been%20doing%20my%20research%20for%20cut-out%20sugar%20cookie%20recipes,%20royal%20icing,%20and%20getting%20inspiration%20from%20a%20few%20of%20my%20favorite%20blogs%20like%20Bake%20at%20350,%20University%20of%20Cookie,%20and%20Cookies%20and%20Cups.%20%20These%20ladies%20know%20how%20to%20bake%20a%20cookie!%20University%20of%20Cookie%20is%20a%20great%20resource%20started%20by%20Bridget%20of%20Bake%20at%20350,%20and%20it%20is%20loaded%20with%20cute%20videos%20and%20helpful%20tips%20and%20tricks!%20Definitely%20go%20check%20it%20out%20if%20you%20are%20venturing%20into%20this%20oddly%20addictive%20venture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20second%20attempt%20was%20for%20another%20dear%20friend's%20son's%20first%20birthday%20party,%20and%20they%20were%20a%20lot%20of%20fun%20to%20make.%20%20The%20color%20theme%20for%20the%20party%20was%20red,%20yellow%20and%20blue,%20so%20I%20brought%20those%20into%20the%20cookies%20by%20using%20the%20paste%20food%20coloring%20in%20the%20little%20tubs%20which%20provide%20a%20much%20more%20vibrant%20color%20than%20water%20based%20or%20gel%20based%20food%20coloring.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELesson%20Learned%20%231:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EXX%20Sugar%20or%20Confectioner's%20Sugar%20sprinkled%20liberally%20on%20your%20work%20surface%20will%20make%20your%20cookie%20making%20experience%20a%20lot%20better,%20and%20easier!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELesson%20Learned%20%232:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECut%20out%20your%20cookies%20to%20the%20same%20thickness.%20This%20is%20done%20by%20either%20the%20rings%20you%20can%20put%20on%20a%20rolling%20pin%20which%20will%20roll%20out%20your%20dough%20to%20the%20same%20thickness,%20or%20if%20you%20have%20two%20strips%20of%20wood%20(clean%20wood!)%20the%20same%20thickness,%20roll%20out%20your%20dough%20in%20between%20these%20two%20strips,%20while%20using%20the%20strips%20of%20wood%20like%20rails%20to%20roll%20your%20rolling%20pin%20on.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELesson%20Learned%20%233:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMake%20two%20batches%20of%20dough%20if%20you%20want%20to%20have%20a%20good%20amount%20for%20a%20gathering,%20and%20chill%20the%20dough%20for%20at%20least%20an%20hour.%20%20I%20patted%20the%20batch%20of%20dough%20into%20a%206%20x%207%20inch%20rectangle,%20approximately,%20then%20wrapped%20it%20plastic%20wrap%20and%20put%20in%20the%20fridge.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOK,%20that%20was%20more%20than%20just%20one%20lesson.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh%20and%20sift%20your%20sugar%20for%20your%20icing!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20are%20seriously%20so%20many%20things%20I%20learned%20while%20making%20these%20cookies.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20cookies%20themselves,%20pre-icing,%20came%20out%20great.%20I%20modified%20Bridget's%20sugar%20cookie%20recipe,%20and%20it%20worked%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20used%20vanilla%20and%20my%20secret%20weapon:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20flavoring%20gives%20the%20cookies%20an%20extra%20buttery,%20every%20so%20slightly%20citrusy%20flavor%20that%20all%20melds%20together%20for%20a%20very.%20tasty.%20cookie.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20did%20add%201/2%20teaspoon%20of%20salt%20to%20one%20batch%20as%20I%20thought%20it%20might%20need%20it%20since%20I%20was%20using%20unsalted%20butter.%20%20Turns%20out,%20it%20didn't%20make%20a%20difference%20at%20all.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20also%20used%20Bridget's%20recipe%20for%20royal%20icing.%20I%20used%20fresh%20lemon%20juice%20in%20the%20baby%20shower%20cookies,%20and%20pure%20vanilla%20extract%20for%20the%20birthday%20cookies.%20Both%20tasted%20great.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20here's%20the%20bad%20news,%20large%20teddy%20bears%20take%20extra,%20extra%20long%20to%20dry!%20Just%20plan%20on%20a%20little%20extra%20time%20if%20flood%20icing%20a%20large%20cookie.%20%20Another%20challenge%20I%20ran%20into%20was%20that%20some%20of%20the%20cookies,%20in%20both%20batches,%20had%20the%20flood%20royal%20icing%20get%20little%20holes%20or%20pock-marks,%20once%20completely%20dry.%20Talk%20about%20freaking%20out!%20In%20the%20end,%20I%20think%20it%20may%20have%20been%20due%20to%20the%20fact%20that%20when%20I%20thinned%20my%20royal%20icing,%20I%20did%20not%20thin%20it%20out%20gradually!%20Patience%20is%20apparently%20important%20with%20royal%20icing.%20I%20was%20able%20to%20embellish%20some%20of%20the%20cookies%20with%20piped%20icing...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20end,%20each%20batch%20took%20a%20full%20three%20nights%20to%20complete.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENight%201:%20Make%20dough%20and%20chill.%20Cut-out%20and%20bake.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENight%202:%20Make%20royal%20icing,%20outline%20cookies%20and%20flood%20ice%20cookies%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENight%203:%20Do%20detailing%20of%20cookies,%20embellish%20etc.%20Let%20completely%20dry%20overnight%20if%20needed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPhew!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
