Receta Sugar Sprinkled Long John with Cheese
by Ang Sarap

Long John is a type of doughnut shaped as a long cylinder that is either glazed or sprinkled with sugar. This type of doughnut like the round ones can also be filled with cream and jam and for our post today instead of filling it with something sweet we are using some soft cheese which is a good contrast to the sweet flavour of sugar. I was first introduced to this type of bread back in the Philippines, precisely in Baguio City when I used to assist at my aunts tindahan. This was one of the food items they sell and I was quite curious why a lot of people buy then so I gave it a shot. Since then I understood why people kept on buying them, it was cheap I remember it was only 1 Peso each during the early 90’s, it’s filling and simply delicious. This became my merianda almost everyday paired with a bottle of soft drinks, it’s one of those simple life’s pleasures. What made this good was the tried and tested combination of sweet and salty, the sweet sugar and the salty cheese complements each other in this fluffy soft and moist bread. I was craving for this for quite some time now but I can’t find a recipe of it anywhere online so I resorted to using my doughnut recipe in making one and here is the result. Sugar Sprinkled Long John with Cheese   Save Print Prep time Cook time Total time   Ingredients Doughnuts 2½ cups flour ¼ cup sugar ½ tsp salt 3 tsp yeast 2 tbsp warm water ¾ cups warm milk 1 egg 3 tbsp shortening oil Others ½ cup sugar 8-10 pcs cheese sticks Instructions Mix well together yeast and warm water in a mixing bowl. Add milk, sugar, salt, shortening, eggs and half of the flour. Using a mixer combine everything together until evenly mixed. Add the remaining flour then mix until smooth, texture will be sticky at this point. Cover bowl with cling wrap then let it rise for an hour in a warm place. Place dough in a well-floured board, dust the top with flour as well. Using a rolling pin flatten the dough gently until it is half inch thick. Do not press too hard. Cut the dough with a sharp knife lengthwise then place in a floured baking pan; let it rise for 30 minutes. On each doughnut, gently pierce through a hole using a skewer at the end and insert the cheese sticks inside. Heat oil in a deep fryer at 180C, of if you are using pan heat oil in medium heat, then put in low when you are ready to fry. Drop doughnuts into the oil one or two at a time. Cook quickly around 1-2 minutes on one side then flip to the other side and cook for 1-2 more minute or until cooked, it should be golden brown in colour if not cook a little bit further. Remove from fryer then place it on a paper lined tray. Sprinkle sugar on top then serve. 3.5.3208   Share this:FacebookTwitterPinterestGooglePocketTumblrSkypeRedditMoreEmailPrintLinkedInLike this:Like Loading...
