I’ve been a fan of Dannon yogurt since I was a little kid. So I was excited to learn about The Dannon Pledge on sustainable agriculture, naturality, and transparency.
I know from talking with other food companies and hearing from my readers that consumers are concerned about GMO (genetically modified organisms) foods and ingredients. They want their favorite brands to start using non-GMO ingredients in their products – and honestly and clearly labeling what ingredients are GMO.
Like Dannon, I believe the currently approved GMOs are safe. Even so, Dannon is working with their partners to provide products that address the growing US consumer demand for non-GMO ingredients.
Dannon moves toward non-GMO ingredients and transparent labeling
With this in mind, Dannon is moving some of their top selling brands, including Danimals Kids Yogurt and Oikos Greek Yogurt, toward non-GMO ingredients. This month, they will start using ingredients, such as sugar and starch, that are more natural, not synthetic and non-GMO starting.
Also, Dannon is developing a supply of non-GMO feed for their dairy cows. Since most cow feed in the US is genetically modified, Dannon is working with feed suppliers and their farmer partners to start planting non-GMO feed to fulfill their supply needs. Once these changes are implemented, products from Dannon, Danimals and Oikos (50% of their product line) will contain milk from cows fed only non-GMO feed. Dannon the first national yogurt company to make these changes.
To further provide transparency about all their products, Dannon is committing to declare the presence of GMO ingredients in their products on their labels, by December 2017. This is independent of what is required by the federal government for GMO labeling.
Dannon’s pledge for sustainable agriculture In addition to providing their cows with non-GMO feed, Dannon is implementing animal welfare practices at their farmer partners’ operations via the Validus Certification system. They’re confident that by July 2016, more than 90% of Dannon’s direct milk supply will come from farms that are Validus Certified.
They’ve also started to work with their farmer partners to improve biodiversity, soil health, and water usage and quality by encouraging practices like rotating crops, and managing fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide application in the production of non-GMO feed for their cows.
Dannon is also working with their farmer partners to aim for better soil health, water quality and quantity, an increase in biodiversity, and to decrease carbon emission and energy use.
