%20If%20so,%20you're%20not%20alone%20and%20I%20have%20fabulous%20recommendation%20for%20you,%20its%20called:%20Cookbook%20Lovers%20Unite.%20A%20brand%20new%20blog%20dedicated%20to%20celebrating%20the%20cookbook%20whore%20in%20all%20of%20us.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20very%20much%20wanted%20to%20join%20the%20first%20group%20theme%20-%20Your%20First%20Love:%20Our%20First%20Theme%20-%20but%20I've%20missed%20the%20deadline.%20While%20I%20did,%20in%20fact,%20make%20a%20recipe%20from%20my%20first%20cookbook%20love,%20I%20just%20didn't%20have%20time%20to%20write%20about%20it%20...%20so%20I'm%20doing%20it%20now.%20Consider%20this%20my%20way%20of%20introducing%20you%20to%20the%20Cookbook%20Lovers%20Unite%20project.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECookbook%20wise,%20my%20first%20love%20is%20decidedly%20classic:%20The%20Joy%20of%20Cooking%20(1974%20edition).%20I%20fell%20hard%20and%20fast%20for%20it%20while%20deep%20in%20the%20throes%20of%20a%20particularly%20violent%20episode%20of%20Chicken%20Pox.%20I%20was%20in%20my%20late%20teens%20-%20far,%20far%20too%20old%20for%20such%20an%20illness%20-%20and%20as%20such%20I%20was%20really%20knocked%20out,%20just%20spectacularly%20sick.%20Recovery%20was%20slow,%20scratchy,%20and%20hopelessly%20boring.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20doing%20hard%20time%20on%20the%20couch,%20mostly%20in%20front%20of%20the%20TV%20watching%20the%201984%20winter%20Olympics,%20I%20casually%20picked%20a%20well-worn%20copy%20of%20The%20Joy%20of%20Cooking%20off%20my%20mother's%20cookbook%20shelf.%20Instantly%20charmed%20by%20the%20kitschy,%20retro%20illustrations,%20the%20book%20captured%20my%20attention%20far%20more%20than%20I%20expected;%20I%20read%20it%20cover%20to%20cover.%20And,%20more%20than%20that,%20it%20captured%20my%20imagination.%20I%20began%20to%20envision%20elegant%20dinner%20parties%20with%20chic%20canapes%20and%20fizzy%20punch.%20Or%20luscious,%20long-simmered%20stews,%20served%20bubbling%20hot%20from%20the%20oven%20on%20crisp%20winter%20nights.%20I%20began%20dog-earring%20the%20pages,%20creating%20my%20imaginary%20menus%20and%20longing%20to%20feel%20well%20enough%20to%20get%20cooking.%20Eventually%20I%20recovered%20and,%20if%20memory%20serves,%20I%20made%20my%20family%20a%20meal%20from%20Joy%20shortly%20thereafter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20still%20have%20and%20treasure%20that%20battered%20old%20copy%20of%20Joy.%20Over%20the%20years,%20I've%20returned%20to%20it%20again%20and%20again%20...%20for%20quiches,%20pot%20pies,%20French%20bread,%20and%20my%20all%20time%20favorite%20peanut%20butter%20cookie%20recipe.%20It%20truly%20is%20a%20classic%20and%20I%20continue%20to%20be%20charmed%20by%20its%20retro%20tone%20and%20whimsical%20presentation.%20I%20mean,%20c'mon,%20this%20edition%20contains%20recipes%20for:%20moose,%20beaver,%20and%20bear!%20Its%20a%20hoot!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20honor%20my%20first%20love,%20I%20decided%20to%20bake%20Gingersnaps.%20And,%20for%20once,%20I%20decided%20to%20simply%20make%20the%20recipe%20as%20directed.%20This%20was%20my%20first%20time%20using%20this%20recipe%20and%20I%20wanted%20to%20give%20it%20a%20chance%20before%20fiddling%20with%20it.%20Though%20I%20did%20add%20an%20extra%201/2%20tsp.%20of%20ginger.%20Shush,%20don't%20tell.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHonestly,%20these%20aren't%20the%20Gingersnaps%20of%20my%20dreams.%20They're%20delightfully%20crisp,%20the%20texture%20is%20just%20prefect,%20but%20they're%20altogether%20too%20sweet%20for%20my%20tastes.%20Next%20time%20I%20will%20cut%20back%20on%20the%20sugar%20and%20increase%20the%20ginger.%20I%20intend%20to%20play%20around%20with%20it%20and%20report%20back.%20Stay%20tuned.%20Though%20if%20you%20enjoy%20a%20sweeter%20cookie,%20this%20baby's%20for%20you.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELastly,%20as%20a%20nod%20to%20tradition,%20I'm%20presenting%20the%20recipe%20as%20written%20in%20the%20book.%20I%20find%20the%20distinct%20lack%20of%20instruction%20amusing.%20I%20hope%20you%20will%20too.%20Seasoned%20bakers%20will%20know%20to%20follow%20proper%20creaming%20/%20wet%20/dry%20ingredient%20technique%20here.%20(Basically,%20cream%20your%20wet%20ingredients,%20whisk%20together%20and%20beat%20in%20the%20dry,%20form%20the%20cookies%20and%20bake.%20)%20As%20written%20this%20recipe%20provides%20only%20two%20steps%20with%20very%20little%20instruction.%20Given%20such%20brevity,%20its%20a%20wonder%20the%20book%20is%20787%20pages%20long!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGingersnaps:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERecipe%20from%20the%201974%20Edition%20of%20The%20Joy%20of%20Cooking%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20%20Pre-heat%20your%20oven%20to%20325%20degrees%20F.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Mix%20ingredients%20until%20blended.%20Form%20dough%20into%203/4%20inch%20balls.%20Bake%20on%20a%20greased%20cookie%20sheet%20for%20about%2012%20minutes.*%20As%20the%20ball%20melts%20down%20during%20baking,%20the%20cookie%20develops%20the%20characteristic%20crinkled%20surface.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYield:%20about%2010%20Dozen%202%20inch%20cookies%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20Unless%20your%20cookie%20sheets%20are%20old%20and%20forlorn,%20there's%20really%20no%20need%20to%20grease%20the%20cookie
