Receta The Kingfisher Restaurant, Mossel Bay
by Tandy Sinclair

Dave and I have only been to Mossel Bay for a meal 4 times in the past 12 years, and each time we have been there we have eaten at The Kingfisher Restaurant. It is situated at The Point, and overlooks the sea and is usually very busy.

Wine

The wine list is good, with the wines separated into varietals. The wines are well priced and the house wine is available per glass or in a 500ml carafe. We chose the Flagstone Poetry Merlot 2010 (R128) as the wine is local to where we stay, and not one we have tried before. The wine was light with a nice berry finish and slightly acidic.

Food

There are a whopping 48 main courses on this menu! These include a layered vegetable bake for vegetarians (R49) and a seafood platter for 2 (R260). Crayfish and oysters are SQ. I chose the grilled Greek calamari (R42) for my starter which came on a cold plate and was cold before I was half way through the dish. Despite this, it was very tasty. Our friend Nico recommended that we try the stuffed ostrich fillet (R105) as our main course and we requested that this come to us on heated plates. This 300g piece of meat was stuffed with mushrooms, onion and feta and was tender and delicious. The onions were al dente which I did not mind but something to keep in mind if you don’t like crunchy onions, and you eat your meat medium. rare. Dave and I had crème brûlée to share for the dessert only because this is brûléed at the table. All desserts are R28. The sugar layer was quite thin and Jason had the torch on too high to get a good brûlée and the crème brûlée was average tasting and not smooth.

Service

Jason our waiter was not the brightest crayon in the box, but he offered us good service and managed to laugh at himself when he made small mistakes. The staff are all friendly but you need to catch their eye as they don’t look at the tables often enough. Jason listed to our requests and paid attention and communicated well with us.

Ambiance

The view is truly amazing and I could sit for hours just gazing at the sea. The restaurant itself is fairly noisy and the tables are really close together.
