The Miley Vyrus Cocktail – Some Velvet Cinn, Something Aged and Hot Damn!
The what. What the what? You know how sometimes silly conversations culminate in something beyond…that’s where this cocktail came from. A tweet from Christina @dessertfortwo, ‘I just can’t handle a dessert that has pumpkin, dark chocolate, salted caramel, malt, coconut milk, & more. Muddled flavors.’ One of my gripes too. What is with this over the top I’m putting in every trend possible into one dessert. What’s it taste like? Who can tell??!! I agreed with Christina but tongue in cheek suggested my next cocktail might be ‘The George Clooney Tequila Hot Salted Caramel Fair Trade Gluten Free Chocolate Cocktail.’ Overboard you say? Of course it is!
Of course snark breeds snark and Nosh On It (@noshonit) jumped into the conversation, ‘I’ll see your George Clooney and raise you a Miley Cyrus’ – great idea, after all Miley is hot right now and no matter if I don’t care for her antics; this cocktail was supposed to be all about the trends right…and like her or not, she is trending (even if not really trendy). At this point I think we’re all seeing Miley twerk with George and doggone it if Christina didn’t hit just the right note when she labeled it the Miley Vyrus Cocktail. YES!
Tongue in cheek Nosh On It made the following suggestion (yes this IS real work on Twitter!):
1 pt shame (midori)
2 pt lust (vanilla vodka)
1 pt guilty pleasure (goldschlager)
1 part #makemeforgetplease (fernet)
1/2 part #IsThisForReal (99 Bananas)
Yes, made me chuckle but then I had to start thinking for real and I was challenged by the folks at Nosh On It to actually come up with a cocktail and I do love me a cocktail challenge! I had just bought a bottle of a liqueur called ‘Hot Damn’ and it seemed perfect; when I checked out the Halloween cocktail that the folks at Cruzan had provided to me if I wanted to feature their Velvet Cinn (Sin?) Liqueur I knew my cocktail had already been made. Really. Hot Damn, Aged Rum and Cinn…you can see where this is going, right? Cinn and Hot Damn are obvious components and I figured the Aged Rum was my nod to Robin Thicke (and yes you ARE too old to have been a part of that Robin…I don’t care what your own wife says!). This cocktail devised originally for Halloween seemed perfect so I ran with it.The Blood Orange liqueur? Maybe the blood bath Miley’s reputation took with those fans who knew her as a girl named Hannah?
Now don’t get me wrong…I wish I could say I was shocked by Miley’s performance on TV recently but little can shock any of us anymore. What I was was part disgusted and part sad. Disgusted at whoever thinks that exploiting someone the age of Miley is good business (Walt Disney…where are YOU?) but also sad that she took the bait. Why does coming of age require taking off your clothes and singing about how crass you are? I value that some young people still believe they can make that transition without totally embarrassing themselves or their parents but then their parents would not take the stance of Billy Ray Cyrus. He not only approved…heck I was shocked that he even watched. I know an Ewww emanated from my lips.
Still, Ms Cyrus made a choice, she’s adamant it’s her right and I guess it’s mine to not like it…and/or to have some fun about it with this cocktail. Make sure you do know how to twerk…it’s a critical proponent in preparation. OK, just shaking the cocktail shaker will do the same…but if you are so inclined? Do as my friend @pineapplecoconut suggests: #twerkednotstirred
How did I like it? An interesting combinations of flavors for sure; I’m not sure the blood orange liqueur is evident enough to be included and my first sample had a bit too much of the Hot Damn! liqueur…that’s what happens when you are trying to make sure it shows up in the photo! Once I skimmed most of that off the top, I enjoyed this for what it is…a sweet and spicy after dinner cocktail.
