%20in%20years,%20but%20you%20know%20what%20I%20mean.%20Lately%20I've%20heard%20a%20lot%20of%20people%20making%20statements%20about%20how%20hard%20it%20is%20to%20eat%20healthy%20because%20it's%20so%20much%20more%20expensive.%20I%20was%20watching%20a%20show%20about%20people%20that%20are%20learning%20to%20be%20healthier%20and%20one%20lady%20said%20that%20she%20never%20visits%20the%20meat%20counter%20because%20that's%20where%20the%20rich%20people%20shop.%20What?????%20My%20goodness.%20I%20guarantee%20if%20they%20compared%20the%20cost%20of%20a%20typical%20month%20of%20food%20versus%20a%20carefully%20planned%20out%20month%20of%20healthy%20foods%20it%20would%20be%20close.%20Try%20it%20yourself,%20you%20might%20be%20surprised!%20I'm%20putting%20more%20effort%20now%20than%20ever%20before%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20stocking%20my%20fridge%20since%20I'm%20cutting%20out%20all%20the%20processed%20stuff.%20I%20thought%20I'd%20share%20my%20strategies%20to%20show%20you%20that%20you%20can%20eat%20healthy%20on%20a%20super%20tight%20budget!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Failure%20to%20Plan%20=%20Planning%20to%20Fail%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBefore%20I%20even%20step%20out%20of%20the%20house%20to%20hit%20the%20grocery%20store%20I%20plan%20out%20my%20meals%20for%20the%20week.%20The%20first%20step%20is%20to%20go%20through%20the%20kitchen%20to%20see%20what%20is%20left%20over%20from%20the%20previous%20week.%20How%20much%20meat%20is%20in%20the%20freezer%20and%20what%20produce%20needs%20to%20be%20used%20up?%20I%20can't%20tell%20you%20how%20many%20times%20I've%20thrown%20away%20rotten%20produce.%20No%20more!!%20That's%20money%20in%20the%20trash.%20So%20with%20what's%20left%20over%20in%20mind,%20I%20then%20hit%20the%20sale%20folders.%20I'm%20lucky%20to%20live%20in%20a%20city%20with%20a%20bunch%20of%20grocery%20stores%20so%20I%20have%20a%20lot%20to%20choose%20from.%20I%20focus%20on%20the%20proteins%20as%20that%20is%20the%20more%20expensive%20portion%20of%20the%20list%20as%20well%20as%20the%20foundation%20of%20all%20my%20meals.%20Once%20I've%20chosen%20my%20proteins,%20I%20look%20for%20recipes.%20If%20I%20don't%20have%20planned%20recipes,%20I%20tend%20to%20lose%20interest%20in%20what's%20in%20the%20fridge%20and%20wind%20up%20at%20the%20Chipotle%20checkout...%20What%20I%20spend%20at%20Chipotle%20for%20one%20meal%20could%20easily%20buy%20me%20two%20or%20three%20meals%20at%20home.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Don't%20throw%20away%20food,%20you%20might%20as%20well%20just%20throw%20your%20money%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Edirectly%20in%20the%20trash%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20you've%20made%20your%20shopping%20list%20and%20you%20head%20off%20to%20the%20store,%20stick%20to%20the%20list!%20Especially%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20produce.%20Don't%20buy%20more%20than%20you%20need!%20Just%20because%20the%20bananas%20come%20in%20a%20bunch%20of%20six%20doesn't%20mean%20you%20have%20to%20buy%20all%20of%20them.%20I%20know%20I%20won't%20eat%20more%20than%20two%20so%20I%20buy%20two.%20The%20same%20applies%20to%20the%20deli%20or%20seafood%20counters,%20don't%20be%20afraid%20to%20order%205%20scallops%20if%20you%20want%20to%20make%20one%20meal%20of%20scallops.%20The%20deli%20guy%20might%20look%20at%20you%20funny%20for%20ordering%20an%201/8th%20of%20a%20pound%20of%20turkey,%20but%20so%20what?%20Everytime%20you%20let%20a%20head%20of%20lettuce%20turn%20to%20brown%20mush%20in%20your%20crisper,%20you%20throw%20away%20the%20money%20you%20spent%20on%20that%20lettuce.%20Those%20dollars%20add%20up%20quick!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Take%20advantage%20of%20your%20freezer%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBuy%20meat%20in%20bulk%20packs%20and%20take%20the%20extra%20five%20minutes%20to%20freeze%20the%20individual%20portions.%20You'll%20save%20a%20lot%20this%20way!%20I%20bought%20steak,%20pork%20chops%20and%20stew%20beef%20this%20week%20and%20spent%20a%20little%20over%20$20,%20that%20will%20get%20me%2018%20meals.%20That's%20a%20little%20over%20a%20dollar%20a%20meal%20for%20the%20meat,%20add%20the%20veggies%20that%20I'll%20eat%20with%20them%20and%20you're%20looking%20at%20roughly%20$2%20to%20$3%20per%20meal%20at%20the%20most.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20do%20find%20yourself%20constantly%20throwing%20away%20fresh%20produce,%20then%20stock%20up%20on%20the%20frozen%20stuff!%20I%20don't%20ever%20buy%20canned%20veggies%20because%20they%20often%20have%20added%20salt%20and%20preservatives,%20but%20frozen%20veggies%20and%20fruit%20tend%20to%20be%20fresh%20picked%20and%20flash%20frozen%20with%20nothing%20added.%20And%20they%20are%20cheap!%20Buy%20the%20store%20brand%20and%20you%20can%20often%20find%20deals%20like%2010%20packages%20for%20$10.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETonight's%20meal%20consisted%20of%20veggies%20that%20needed%20to%20be%20used%20up,%20plus%20veggies%20from%20the%20freezer%20and%20chicken%20from%20the%20freezer.%20I%20bought%20the%20chicken%20last%20month%20when%20it%20was%20on%20sale,%20buy%20one%20pound%20get%20one%20pound%20free.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECook%20the%20veggies%20for%20a%20few%20minutes%20and%20in%20the%20meantime,%20combine%20the%20ingredients%20for%20the%20stir%20fry%20sauce%20(minced%20garlic%20clove,%20soy%20sauce,%20sesame%20oil,%20honey)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20chicken%20and%20the%20sauce%20and%20cook%20until%20it's%20all%20combined%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20was%20a%20really%20easy%20meal%20to%20prepare%20and%20it%20was%20delicious!%20Simple%20and%20tasty%20and%20gave%20me%20enough%20for%20two%20servings,%20the%20other%20will%20probably%20be%20lunch%20tomorrow.%20And%20the%20total%20cost?%20Under%20$10%20total,%20or%20between%20$4%20and%20$5%20per%20serving.%20Cheaper%20than%20a%20value%20meal%20at%20McDonald's,%20that's%20for%20sure,%20even%20if%20you%20ate%20off%20the%20dollar%20menu,%20a%20double%20cheeseburger,%20small%20fries%20and%20small%20drink%20would%20cost%20you%20$3.15%20so%20why%20not%20splurge%20the%20extra%20$.85%20on%20REAL%20FOOD!%20The%20truth%20is,%20you%20have%20to%20want%20it.%20It%20takes%20effort,%20it's%20a%20commitment%20to%20treat%20yourself%20right%20by%20eating%20well.%20What's%20more%20important,%20convenience%20and%20feeling%20like%20crap%20all%20the%20time?%20Or%20effort%20and%20feeling%20great%20mentally%20and%20physically?%20For%20me%20it's%20an%20easy%20choice%20these%20days!!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
