Dear Food Diary:
Exploring the city can get tiring, yeah I know, how tough for me and my first world problems. But it’s been over a week and my old bones needed a break, so for today’s lunch, instead of hopping on the train, I walked to Akibaichi which is right in our neighborhood.
There’s 3 floors of restaurants to choose from but Susuya’s Tonkatsu Cyazuke looked different. I’ve had my share of tonkatsu (Japanese deep fried pork cutlet) at Donburiya & Katsu-hama back home, but not with a pile of cabbage on top? I went in to further taste-igate.
To my surprise, they had instructions of how to eat and tea to pour over rice, pork cutlet and pickles. How fun…

%20at%20Donburiya%20&%20Katsu-hama%20back%20home,%20but%20not%20with%20a%20pile%20of%20cabbage%20on%20top?%20I%20went%20in%20to%20further%20taste-igate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20my%20surprise,%20they%20had%20instructions%20of%20how%20to%20eat%20and%20tea%20to%20pour%20over%20rice,%20pork%20cutlet%20and%20pickles.%20How%20fun%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELately,%20I%E2%80%99ve%20learned%20not%20to%20lunch%20with%20the%20office%20workers.%20Spare%20the%20crowd%20and%20eat%20late.%20I%20get%20more%20space%20and%20better%20service%20even%20sans%20Japanese.%20Which%20happens%20to%20be%20around%202pm%20or%20so%20(I%20hold%20up%20with%20a%20big%20breakfast).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESuzuya%20labels%20TONKATSU-Cyazuke%20as%20their%20%E2%80%9Cfamous%20special%20dish%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20set%20comes%20with%20unlimited%20boiled%20cabbage%20and%20Japanese%20pickles,%20rice,%20miso%20soup%20and%20hot%20tea.%20I%20ordered%20the%20regular%20size%20for%20about%20$14%20or%20you%20can%20supersize%20it%20for%20an%20extra%20$2.50.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20don%E2%80%99t%20serve%20the%20usual%20sweet%20tonkatsu%20sauce%20here.%20Instead,%20you%20choose%20from%20soy,%20spicy,%20or%20in%20my%20case%20ginger%20&%20garlic%20soy%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20fried%20pork%20cutlet%20came%20sizzling%20on%20top%20of%20the%20ginger%20&%20garlic%20soy%20sauce.%20The%20bottom%20started%20absorbing%20the%20mixture%20while%20the%20top%20was%20still%20nice%20and%20crunchy.%20A%20good%20portion%20of%20the%20boiled%20cabbage%20piled%20on%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EINSTRUCTIONS:I%20was%20pretty%20tickled%20by%20the%20illustration.%20How%20clever.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBeing%20a%20tonkatsu%20cyazuke%20virgin,%20I%20went%20for%20the%20Orthodox%20Style.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPiping%20hot,%20fluffy%20rice%20and%20a%20piece%20of%20this%20thick%20and%20juicy%20pork.%20Ohhh,%20heavens.%20Fried%20perfectly,%20extra%20crispy%20on%20top,%20nice%20crunch%20with%20a%20savory%20sauce%20on%20the%20bottom.%20The%20garlic%20and%20ginger%20make%20small%20appearances,%20easily%20missed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20pickles%20and%20was%20glad%20these%20were%20unlimited.%20The%20daikon%20had%20yuzu%20shavings,%20so%20light%20and%20citrusy.%20A%20little%20bit%20sweet%20and%20tart.%20The%20preserved%20vegetables%20go%20really%20well%20when%20there%E2%80%99s%20tea%20in%20my%20rice%20afterwards.%20The%20plum%20has%20a%20tang%20to%20it,%20gives%20the%20palate%20a%20rest%20in%20between%20bites.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20the%20orthodox%20way%20said%20to%20leave%203%20pieces%20and%20ask%20for%20the%20Japanese%20tea.%20Before%20I%20could%20ask,%20the%20waitress%20had%20already%20read%20my%20mind.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20pretty%20hesitant%20actually,%20I%20can%20imagine%20a%20soggy%20deep%20fried%20pork%20cutlet%20floating%20in%20tea.%20I%20prefer%20crispy!!!But%20for%20the%20sake%20of%20eating%20like%20a%20local,%20I%20sacrificed%20one%20piece%20and%20one%20piece%20only.%20It%20looked%20kind%20of%20pretty,%20as%20the%20tea%20started%20rising%20and%20the%20pretty%20colors%20in%20my%20bowl%20were%20mixed%20with%20little%20speckles%20of%20oil%20floating%20to%20the%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETaste%20wise?%20Just%20as%20I%20suspected,%20the%20batter%20drenched%20soggy%20mess%20in%20tea%20just%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20my%20thing%20AT%20ALL.%20Though%20the%20tea%20added%20a%20nice%20balance.%20Not%20only%20did%20it%20help%20cut%20the%20oil,%20it%20also%20added%20a%20fresh%20grassy%20note,%20with%20a%20very%20faint%20bitter/sweet%20finish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20ate%20my%20precious%202%20remaining%20pieces%20crispy%20and%20then%20converted%20into%20somewhat%20of%20a%20Neatly%20Style.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20rice%20and%20the%20soft,%20sweet%20cabbage%20in%20tea%20was%20the%20perfect%20tummy%20warming%20combo.%20The%20pickles%20added%20some%20much%20needed%20saltiness%20and%20crunch.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%E2%80%99ve%20noticed%20the%20lack%20of%20veggies%20in%20our%20average%20meal,%20but%20here,%20you%20can%20have%20a%20cabbage%20feast.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20cute%20is%20the%20keychain%20of%20their%20famous%20dish?!%20I%20was%20too%20cheap%20to%20buy%20it,%20that%E2%80%99s%20almost%20another%20set.%20Thought%20about%20the%20loyalty%20stamp%20card,%20but%20I%20need%20variety.%20Though%20StalkerBoy%20has%20been%20drooling%20over%20these%20photos%20(I%20sent%20him%20while%20he%20was%20working).%20Friendly%20torture%20*wink*.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20was%20a%20fun%20and%20tasty%20(fun-tasty?)%20lunch,%20it%20seemed%20heavy,%20but%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20walk%20out%20feeling%20like%20it.%20My%20bet%20is%20on%20all%20that%20hot%20tea%20I%20had.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThough,%20I%20did%20go%20back%20and%20have%20a%20pretty%20sweet%20nap.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EP.S.%20Chubby%E2%80%99s%20Rating:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.toncya-suzuya.com.jp%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.udx.akibaichi.jp%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERight%20around%20the%20Akihabara%20Station%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELook%20at%20all%20the%20options,%20I%E2%80%99m%20pretty%20sure%20I%20will%20be%20back!%20Lunch%20&%20dinner.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20UDX%20building%20is%20pretty%20
