Summary

Upma/Uppuma/Uppittu is a common South indian breakfast dish.The word 'Uppu' in Telugu, Kannada and Tamil means Salt and the word 'Hittu' in Kannada and 'Mavu' in Tamil means flour and hence the dish is called Uppittu/Upma.

1)In a pan, heat oil or ghee.

2)Add mustard seeds.

3)When you hear the crackling sound of mustard seeds, it means they are getting fried.

4)Now add onions, green chilly, curry leaves,groundnuts.Fry for a minute.Now add water to this mixture and let it come to a boil.

5)Add salt and lemon juice.When water comes to boiling, lower the flame and add the roasted semolina to it.

6)Keep on stirring while you add the semolina.

7)The semolina should be added not once but in 3-4 batches with a spoon.

8)If you add it at once, lumps will be formed.Keep on stirring.

9)The semolina will absorb water and swell and begin to cook.If the mixture looks dry, then add some more water.

10)Reduce the flame and simmer the upma for 2-3 minutes.

11)Keep stirring so that the upma does not stick to the pan.

12)Garnish upma with coriander/cilantro leaves.
