,%20an%20Intersession%20during%20which%20kids%20ask,%20%22How%20do%20you%20find%20and%20make%20great%20recipes?%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20students%20started%20the%20week%20making%20provided%20recipes,%20learning%20about%20kitchen%20safety,%20and%20discovering%20the%20magic%20of%20mise-en-place.%20After%20this%20first%20run%20with%20training%20wheels,%20they%20built%20independence%20in%20the%20kitchen%20by%20choosing%20their%20own%20recipes.%20One%20group%20learned%20the%20hard%20way%20to%20read%20recipes%20all%20the%20way%20through%20before%20choosing.%20It%20turns%20out%20their%20biscuit%20recipe%20was%20made%20to%20be%20cooked%20over%20hot%20coals!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETheir%20recipe%20adaptation%20skillz%20and%20creativity%20were%20challenged%20in%20a%20middle%20school%20favorite:%20Cupcake%20Wars!%20They%20chose%20filling,%20frostings,%20and%20toppings%20to%20dress%20up%20cupcakes.%20We%20ended%20up%20with%20Lemon%20Colada,%20Strawberry%20Choco-Cheesecake,%20and%20Orange%20Delight%20cupcake%20flavors.%20Finally,%20we%20ended%20the%20week%20with%20a%20true%20test%20of%20their%20proficiency%20in%20the%20kitchen:%20CHOPPED.%20They%20could%20use%20anything%20in%20the%20kitchen%20to%20make%20.%20.%20.%20well,%20anything!%20Judges%20were%20treated%20to%20fried%20chicken%20with%20a%20side%20of%20cabbage%20salad,%20lemon%20mousse%20profiteroles,%20and%20cookies%20and%20creme%20whoopie%20pies.%20All%20of%20it%20was%20cooked%20to%20perfection,%20and%20talk%20about%20an%20impressive%20difficulty%20level!%20It's%20so%20gratifying%20to%20watch%20them%20bloom%20from%20kids%20who%20aren't%20sure%20about%20the%20difference%20between%20a%20tablespoon%20and%20a%20teaspoon%20to%20little%20master%20chefs.%20It's%20also%20something%20that%20just%20teaching%20and%20demos%20really%20can't%20do%20%E2%80%94%20to%20learn,%20they%20have%20to%20get%20in%20the%20kitchen%20and%20rise%20and%20fall%20on%20their%20own.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20celebrated%20with%20a%20trip%20to%20a%20local%20Japanese%20steakhouse%20where%20the%20staff%20wink-winked%20us%20into%20declaring%20it%20a%20student's%20birthday,%20meaning%20free%20cheesecake%20all%20around.%20What%20lovely%20memories.%20And%20just%20look%20at%20their%20own%20estimation%20of%20how%20they%20grew:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20my%20favorite%20parts%20of%20reading%20their%20reflections%20on%20the%20week%20is%20how%20they%20interpreted%20their%20own%20mistakes.%20Students%20can%20sometimes%20feel%20like%20getting%20the%20right%20answer%20is%20the%20goal%20of%20every%20process,%20but%20a%20huge%20part%20of%20cooking%20(and,%20okay,%20life)%20is%20how%20you%20handle%20messing%20up.%20One%20kid%20noted,%20%22A%20mistake%20I%20made%20was%20not%20reading%20through%20how%20much%20powder%20sugar%20we%20needed%20and%20we%20ran%20out,%20so%20I%20had%20to%20make%20some%20from%20sugar%20and%20corn%20starch.%20I%20learned%20to%20read%20over%20everything%20first%20before%20jumping%20in.%22%20Another%20revealed,%20%22I%20think%20something%20that%20was%20important%20that%20I%20learned%20was%20how%20to%20work%20with%20others%20and%20communicate%20with%20them%20too.%20I%20think%20a%20big%20problem%20my%20group%20had%20was%20talking%20to%20each%20other%20and%20listening%20to%20each%20other.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWise%20words%20resulting%20from%20what,%20to%20outsiders,%20may%20look%20like%20just%20a%20chaotic%20week%20of%20cooking%20and%20eating%20way%20too%20many%20fried%20pickles%20%E2%80%94%20am%20I%20right?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20think%20my%20students%20would%20have%20no%20trouble%20tackling%20this%20week's%20recipe,%20even%20though%20it%20requires%20a%20good%20read-through%20before%20beginning.%20This%20delicious,%20decadent,%20company-ready%20dessert%20consists%20of%20a%20buttery%20macadamia%20nut%20crust,%20a%20creamy%20layer%20of%20vanilla%20bean%20cheesecake,%20a%20tangy%20vanilla%20bean%20sour%20cream%20topping,%20and%20finally%20a%20cloud%20of%20vanilla%20bean%20whipped%20cream%20mousse.%20In%20short,%20it's%20a%20vanilla%20lover's%20dream.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20year%20ago:%20Brownie%20Blackout%20Mousse%20Cake%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
