Receta Villagio On The Park: An Italian With “A Little Something Extra”!

I recently ventured out for dinner in Villagio On The Park (the former site of the longstanding Mickey Mantle's). In a chic spot with a view of Central Park, I expected small portions and outlandish prices but I got just the opposite. If you dig down-home Italian in giant portions that you can share (even though it's not a "family style" restaurant) and waiters that bring you "extras," you must try Villagio. It's the golden combination of quality AND quantity! The affable David Fuentes planned out what I was going to try (as opposed to letting me order) and I was very glad about it. .%20In%20a%20chic%20spot%20with%20a%20view%20of%20Central%20Park,%20I%20expected%20small%20portions%20and%20outlandish%20prices%20but%20I%20got%20just%20the%20opposite.%20If%20you%20dig%20down-home%20Italian%20in%20giant%20portions%20that%20you%20can%20share%20(even%20though%20it's%20not%20a%20%22family%20style%22%20restaurant)%20and%20waiters%20that%20bring%20you%20%22extras,%22%20you%20must%20try%20Villagio.%20It's%20the%20golden%20combination%20of%20quality%20AND%20quantity!%20The%20affable%20David%20Fuentes%20planned%20out%20what%20I%20was%20going%20to%20try%20(as%20opposed%20to%20letting%20me%20order)%20and%20I%20was%20very%20glad%20about%20it.%20I%20got%20some%20of%20his%20favorite%20dishes%20to%20try%20and%20a%20secret%20dessert%20that%20was%20not%20really%20on%20the%20menu%20that%20night!%20I%20loved%20the%20light%20airy%20feeling%20of%20the%20Villagio%20space--the%20floor%20to%20ceiling%20windows%20in%20front%20are%20open%20when%20the%20weather's%20nice,%20so%20diners%20have%20the%20choice%20of%20dining%20al%20fresco,%20%22half%20in%20and%20half%20out%22%20or%20totally%20indoors.%20Dozens%20of%20modern%20clear%20cube%20shaped%20lamps%20hang%20from%20the%20ceiling%20and%20the%20speckled%20marble%20modern%20bar%20has%20a%20clean,%20chic%20look.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInteriorThe%20first%20item%20that%20came%20to%20our%20table%20was%20complimentary%20red%20onion%20and%20fresh%20rosemary%20focaccia%20bread%20(simply%20known%20as%20House%20Focaccia)%20that%20all%20diners%20get%20besides%20regular%20Italian%20rolls.%20The%20dough%20was%20freshly%20made%20and%20was%20cooked%20to%20golden%20perfection.%20I%20could%20easily%20have%20binged%20on%20this%20luscious%20item,%20but%20I%20wanted%20to%20save%20room%20for%20what%20was%20to%20come.%20The%20staff%20wanted%20me%20to%20try%20some%20of%20their%20super%20tender%20pasta,%20so%20they%20brought%20me%20Gondoletta%20($22),%20which%20must%20have%20this%20name%20because%20they%20are%20kind%20of%20shaped%20like%20gondolas!%20The%20pasta%20layer%20is%20soft%20and%20cooked%20to%20the%20perfect%20degree%20of%20tenderness,%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20stuffed%20with%20four%20homemade%20cheeses%20and%20spinach.%20It%20is%20tossed%20with%20a%20light%20truffle%20cream%20sauce%20before%20serving.%20This%20is%20one%20of%20the%20best%20pasta%20dishes%20I%20have%20had%20in%20the%20last%20ten%20years%20in%20Manhattan,%20so%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20recommend%20it%20highly%20enough.%20To%20my%20great%20joy,%20the%20next%20item%20out%20of%20the%20kitchen%20was%20Fiore%20Di%20Zucca,%20which%20is%20a%20dish%20of%20six%20large%20zucchini%20flowers%20stuffed%20with%20smoked%20mozzarella%20and%20prosciutto%20($21).%20This%20is%20a%20delicacy%20that%20is%20hard%20to%20come%20by%20even%20in%20Manhattan's%20most%20authentic%20Italian%20restaurants,%20and%20they%20serve%20it%20with%20Villagio's%20wonderful%20homemade%20super-chunky%20marinara%20sauce%20on%20the%20side.%20The%20hot%20mozzarella%20oozed%20out%20of%20the%20orange%20zucchini%20blossoms%20and%20the%20prosciutto%20was%20tender%20and%20thinly%20sliced.%20I%20would%20go%20back%20to%20Villagio%20just%20for%20this%20one%20dish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELombata%20Parmigiana%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20entree%20chosen%20was%20Lombata%20Parmigiana%20($32),%20which%20is%20a%20flattened%20veal%20chop%20saut%C3%A9ed%20with%20sliced%20Portobello%20mushrooms%20in%20a%20Marsala%20wine%20sauce.%20Keep%20in%20mind%20that%20the%20picture%20shown%20here%20is%20one%20portion%20split%20in%20half!%20The%20total%20portion%20is%20at%20east%2018%20ounces,%20and%20the%20tender%20veal%20chop%20is%20super-tender%20thanks%20to%20not%20only%20being%20prime%20meat%20but%20because%20it%20is%20pounded%20before%20being%20breaded.%20The%20veal%20is%20pretty%20classic%20parmigiana%20style,%20but%20you%20almost%20do%20not%20need%20a%20knife%20to%20cut%20it.%20On%20the%20side%20are%20golden%20sliced%20potatoes%20with%20a%20little%20truffle%20oil%20on%20them%20and%20freshly%20steamed%20broccoli.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFiore%20Di%20Zucca%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20dessert%20was%20something%20super-special%20and%20highly%20Southern%20Italian--Pera%20Zabaglione%20($12).%20This%20is%20something%20that%20the%20restaurant%20is%20becoming%20legendary%20for%20and%20you%20might%20want%20to%20call%20ahead%20to%20see%20if%20they%20will%20be%20serving%20it%20on%20the%20night%20you%20intend%20to%20go%20to%20Villagio.%20These%20are%20pairs%20poached%20in%20Marsala%20and%20served%20with%20cinnamon-tinged%20zabaglione%20cream.%20I%20love%20the%20fact%20that%20general%20manager%20Fuentes%20makes%20limoncello%20with%20his%20own%20two%20hands%20down%20basement%20level%20of%20Villagio%20and%20then%20places%20it%20in%20their%20giant%20cooler.%20He%20admits%20that%20he%20is%20a%20freak%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20shaving%20the%20rinds%20of%20100%20lemons%20at%20a%20time%20to%20make%20each%20batch,%20which%20ferment%20for%20at%20least%20two%20weeks%20before%20getting%20served%20as%20a%20complimentary%20end%20of%20meal%20treat%20for%20everyone%20who%20sets%20foot%20inside%20this%20lovely,%20airy%20restaurant.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVillagio%20welcomes%20whole%20families,%20and%20the%20staff%20bends%20over%20backwards%20to%20deal%20with%20food%20preferences,%20diets%20and%20allergies.%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20great%20place%20to%20take%20a%20fussy%20family%20or%20visitors%20from%20out%20of%20town%E2%80%94or%20is%20simply%20the%20place%20to%20go%20when%20you%20want%20either%20North%20or%20Southern%20Italian%20created%20authentically!%20Mickey%20Mantle%E2%80%99s%20old%20place%20has%20gone%20from%20%E2%80%9CThe%20Mick%E2%80%9D%20to%20minestrone,%20but%20we%20think%20if%20he%20were%20still%20around,%20he%20would%20go%20eat%20at%20Villagio!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVillagio%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E40%20Park%20Avenue%20South%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENew%20York,%20NY%2010019%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(212)%20369-4000%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.villagiorestaurants.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECuisine:%20Italian%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
