.%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20fun%20festival,%20colorful,%20bright%20and%20noisy%20with%20all%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Efire-crackers%20bursting%20away%E2%80%A6.and%20that%E2%80%99s%20just%20how%20we%20like%20to%20celebrate%20Diwali.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh!%20and%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ebest%20part%E2%80%A6of%20course%20the%20goodies.%20So%20many%20lovely%20sweets%20and%20snacks%20are%20prepared%20and%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eshared%20and%20the%20preparation%20starts%20from%20few%20weeks%20before%20the%20big%20day.%20Some%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eprefer%20to%20just%20buy%20the%20snacks,%20others%20prepare%20them%20at%20home%20themselves%E2%80%A6either%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eway%20it%E2%80%99s%20a%20lot%20of%20fun.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecelebrated%20Diwali%20in%20our%20own%20small%20ways%20after%20our%20marriage.%20I%20still%20remember%20our%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Efirst%20Diwali%20when%20we%20were%20just%20newly%20married%20and%20living%20in%20Chennai.%20Wanting%20it%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eto%20be%20extra%20special,%20I%20made%20Besan%20Laddo,%20Chakli%20and%20Gujiya%20(karanji),%20all%20for%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethe%20first%20time,%20and%20apart%20from%20the%20chakli%20getting%20semi-burnt,%20the%20rest%20all%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecame%20out%20fine!!%20%20We%20decorated%20the%20house%20with%20lots%20of%20light%20and%20along%20with%20my%20sis-in-law%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eand%20bro-in-law%20(who%20were%20also%20newly%20married),%20we%20burst%20lots%20of%20crackers%20and%20had%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ea%20lot%20of%20fun.%20My%20sis-in-law%E2%80%99s%20name%20is%20also%20Manju.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EManju%20chechi%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(as%20I%20call%20her)%20had%20called%20us%20to%20her%20home%20for%20dinner%20and%20she%20made%20some%20amazing%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDal%20kachori,%20Veg%20Biriyani,%20raita%20and%20Gulab%20jamuns%20that%20evening%20and%20it%20was%20just%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esplendid.%20I%20remember%20all%20this%20just%20like%20it%20happened%20yesterday%E2%80%A6Nostalgia%20is%20a%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eweird%20thing!%20:-)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20that%20our%20next%20Diwali%E2%80%99s%20have%20all%20been%20here%20at%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMinneapolis%20and%20it%20has%20been%20fun%20every%20year.%20We%20usually%20go%20to%20the%20temple%20and%20burst%20crackers%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethere%20and%20then%20have%20a%20grand%20potluck%20dinner%20at%20our%20friend%E2%80%99s%20place%20followed%20by%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emore%20bursting%20of%20crackers.%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20festival%20we%20eagerly%20wait%20for%20each%20year.%20We%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ehave%20been%20lucky%20to%20have%20friend%E2%80%99s%20whom%20we%20can%20proudly%20call%20next%20to%20family%20and%20we%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Edon%E2%80%99t%20miss%20a%20chance%20to%20celebrate%20any%20festival.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELast%20year%20I%20made%20some%20Ring%20Murukku%20and%20Chakli%20along%20with%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esome%20fusion%20sweets%20like%20Gajar%20Halwa%20and%20turned%20some%20of%20it%20into%20Carrot%20Halwa%20filled%20Chocolates%20and%20Spiced%20Mango%20burfi.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewill%20share%20the%20ring%20murukku%20recipe%20soon%20as%20well.%20Apparently%20it%20has%20taken%20my%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emake%20this%20year%E2%80%A6Lol!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20crunchy%20snacks%20and%20chakli%20(murukku)%20is%20my%20favorite%20of%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethem%20all.%20My%20mom%E2%80%99s%20elder%20sister,%20my%20velliammachi,%20used%20to%20make%20the%20most%20awesome%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Echakli%E2%80%99s%20I%E2%80%99ve%20ever%20eaten.%20Infact%20these%20don%E2%80%99t%20come%20quite%20close%20to%20how%20she%20used%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eto%20make%20them,%20but%20for%20my%20first%20try%20it%20came%20out%20very%20decent%20I%20should%20say%20and%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethey%20are%20made%20with%20whole%20wheat%20flour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20%20Place%20the%20atta%20powder%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ein%20a%20clean%20white%20muslin%20cloth%20and%20tie%20it%20up%20like%20a%20pouch.%20Using%20a%20steamer%20or%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eidli%20vessel%20,%20steam%20cook%20atta.%20Cover%20and%20Steam%20cook%20for%2015%20mins%20to%2020%20mins.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20%20Untie%20and%20when%20it%20is%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewarm%20enough%20to%20handle,%20break%20it%20roughly%20and%20sieve%20it%20into%20another%20bowl%20and%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ebreak%20any%20bigger%20pieces%20with%20hands.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20%20Heat%20oil%20in%20kadai,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emeanwhile%20you%20prepare%20the%20dough.%20Add%20red%20chilli%20powder,%20asafoetida,%20salt%20and%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ejeera%20and%20a%20tsp%20of%20hot%20oil%20and%20Make%20dough%20with%20water.%20It%20should%20be%20a%20stiff%20yet%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esmooth%20and%20non%20sticky%20dough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20used%20the%20star%20shaped%20hole%20plate%20to%20make%20these%20chakli.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Press%20the%20dough%20using%20the%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Epressing%20gun%20and%20form%20into%20a%20concentric%20circle%20shape%20or%20coil%20shape.%20I%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Epressed%20in%20onto%20my%20silicon%20mat%20(you%20can%20use%20an%20oiled%20plate%20or%20wax%20paper%20to%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eshape%20the%20dough%20onto)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Make%20sure%20the%20oil%20is%20hot%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eenough%20and%20Using%20a%20spatula%20transfer%20each%20chakli%20into%20the%20hot%20oil%20and%20deep%20fry%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eboth%20sides%20until%20crisp%20and%20golden%20brown.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDrain%20over%20a%20paper%20towel%20and%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Estore%20in%20an%20air-tight%20container.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20%20Never%20let%20oil%20fume%20at%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eany%20point,%20regulate%20the%20heat%20now%20and%20then%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20%20Make%20sure%20water%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Edoesn't%20enter%20the%20wheat%20powder%20while%20steaming%20and%20once%20steamed%20the%20whole-wheat%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eflour%20(atta)%20should%20look%20dry%20and%20devoid%20of%20moisture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHave%20a%20fun%20and%20safe%20Diwali!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Manju%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
