%20restaurant%20at%20the%20South%20Bay%20recently,%20I%20had%20the%20immediate%20urge%20to%20cook%20something%20similar%20at%20home.%20It%20was%20a%20clear%20soup,%20light%20yet%20super%20flavorful,%20filled%20with%20natural%20sweetness%20and%20delicious%20savoriness,%20quite%20different%20from%20the%20usual%20winter%20melon%20soup%20I%20cook%20at%20home.%20I%20did%20not%20have%20the%20exact%20recipe%20and%20while%20I%20sipped%20it,%20had%20to%20look%20hard%20at%20each%20scoopful%20of%20soup%20(till%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20soup%20pot)%20for%20ingredients%20that%20have%20gone%20into%20the%20soup.%20I%20saw%20large%20cubes%20of%20winter%20melon,%20huge%20chucks%20of%20pork,%20thin%20slices%20of%20orange%20peel%20and%20little%20pearls%20of%20barley.%20OK.%20I%20can%20make%20this.%20And,%20I%20will%20make%20this.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20planning%20to%20cook%20this%20soup%20and%20a%20week%20after,%20coincidentally%20saw%20another%20super%20interesting%20idea%20related%20to%20winter%20melon%20at%20Taste%20Hong%20Kong's%20Snowy%20Winter%20Melon%20Soup.%20Alright!%20I%20am%20going%20to%20pulverize%20my%20winter%20melon%20to%20get%20that%20snowy%20silky%20texture%20in%20this%20%22new%22%20soup%20that%20I%20am%20going%20to%20cook%20at%20home!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWinter%20Melon%20Soup%20with%20Barley%20%E5%86%AC%E7%93%9C%E8%96%8F%E4%BB%81%E6%B1%A4%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%20some%20chicken%20backs/bones%20(for%20chicken%20stock),%20about%206-8%20small%20chopped%20pieces;%203-4%20thin%20slices%20of%20orange%20peel%20(Note:%20I%20use%20fresh%20orange%20peel.%20Remove%20white%20rind%20from%20the%20orange%20peel%20if%20possible%20to%20reduce%20bitterness);%201/2%20cup%20uncooked%20pearl%20barley,%20soaked%20the%20night%20before;%20about%203-4%20cups%20of%20pulverized%20winter%20melon;%20sea%20salt%20and%20(if%20preferred)%20ground%20white%20pepper%20to%20taste;%20cilantro%20to%20garnish%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%20Blanch%20the%20chicken%20in%20water%20with%20ginger%20to%20remove%20the%20scum/blood.%20In%20a%20pot%20of%20water%20(just%20enough%20to%20submerge%20the%20chicken),%20add%20the%20blanched%20chicken%20and%20barley%20and%20allow%20it%20to%20cook%20to%20a%20boil.%20When%20boiling,%20add%20the%20orange%20peel,%20turn%20down%20the%20heat%20and%20continue%20to%20simmer%20till%20the%20barley%20is%20almost%20cooked.%20Add%20the%20winter%20melon%20and%20allow%20it%20to%20cook%20-%20about%2010-15minutes,%20then%20the%20winter%20melon%20turns%20from%20white%20to%20transparent,%20and%20it's%20done.%20Add%20the%20cilantro,%20then%20sea%20salt%20to%20taste.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20a%20side%20note,%20my%20friend%20has%20advised%20me%20to%20drink%20more%20soups%20during%20my%20recovery%20process%20to%20improve%20blood%20circulation%20of%20the%20body%20that%20will%20in%20turn%20speed%20up%20the%20healing%20process%20of%20my%20elbow%20and%20other%20bruises%20(both%20my%20knees,%20and%20right%20thigh%20are%20bruised%20as%20well).%20Now,%20soup%20is%20really%20multi-purposeful!%20Healing,%20comfort,%20satisfying.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEnjoy!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20you%20have%20any%20go-to%20food%20when%20feeling%20down/unwell?%20For%20healing%20or%20comfort%20purpose?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESharing%20this%20soup-based%20dish%20with%20Souper%20Sunday,%20and%20Hearth%20and%20Soul.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETag:%20winter%20melon,%20barley,%20soup%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
