Dear Food Diary:
I’ve been here for almost 3 weeks and visited AkibaIchi UDX a handful of times. Every time I walk by Tsukiji Restaurant Gen-Chan, it always seems to be crowded. The vibe is super friendly and so are the prices.
The huge posters of awesome raw fish, shrimp and eggs bowls outside are as alluring as the teenage boy band posters I had on my bedroom wall. (NKOTB if you need to know)
As the name suggests, the ingredients here are fresh from the Tsukiji Fish Market.
No English menu but the photos and waiters try real hard to help.

%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20the%20name%20suggests,%20the%20ingredients%20here%20are%20fresh%20from%20the%20Tsukiji%20Fish%20Market.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo%20English%20menu%20but%20the%20photos%20and%20waiters%20try%20real%20hard%20to%20help.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYuzu%20sake,%20so%20refreshing%20and%20summery.%20My%20drink%20of%20choice.%20Alcohol%20in%20Tokyo%20is%20fairly%20inexpensive,%20no%20wonder%20people%20get%20wasted%20left%20and%20right.%20I%E2%80%99ve%20seen%20it%20mid%20afternoon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20their%20Nigiwai%20set%20for%20about%20$11.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20bowl%20is%20topped%20generously%20with%20chopped%20tuna,%20salmon,%20mini%20shrimp%20and%20fish.%20Seaweed,%20pickles%20and%20a%20raw%20egg%20over%20a%20warm%20plump%20and%20fluffy%20rice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFirst%20step%20is%20to%20toss%20it%20with%20some%20special%20sweet%20soy,%20and%20enjoy%20the%20mix%20as%20is.%20Second%20step,%20you%20pour%20a%20tea%20fish%20broth%20over%20it%20and%20drink%20it%20like%20soup%20rice.%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20sure%20why%20they%20also%20have%20miso%20soup,%20seems%20redundant%20to%20me.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20sweet%20soy%20is%20low%20in%20sodium%20but%20it%20adds%20a%20really%20nice%20sweetness%20to%20the%20fresh%20ingredients.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20really%20messy%20Japanese%20style%20cold%20%E2%80%9Cpaella%E2%80%9D%20if%20you%20will.%20The%20flavors%20and%20textures%20are%20so%20naughty%20and%20fun.%20Umami%20drapes%20the%20tongue%20as%20you%20go%20through%20sweet,%20melt%20in%20your%20mouth%20textures%20of%20the%20fish%20and%20refreshingly%20crunchy%20pieces%20of%20sweet%20pickle.%20Toasted%20seaweed%20strips%20interfere%20with%20salty%20moments%20as%20scallions%20brightened%20the%20mouthful.%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20stop%20eating%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20was%20a%20lot%20of%20rice%20and%20I%20finished%20it%20all%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20closer%20look%20at%20the%20sexy%20mix.%20It%20still%20amazes%20me%20at%20how%20disproportianate%20the%20price%20is%20compared%20to%20the%20quality,%20not%20to%20mention%20how%20ridiculously%20delicious%20it%20is.%20Proving%20once%20again,%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20break%20the%20bank%20to%20eat%20well%20in%20Tokyo.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20next%20step%20was%20to%20pour%20that%20nice%20hot%20broth%20into%20the%20bowl%20along%20with%20some%20of%20these%20toasted%20puffs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20mixture%20is%20so%20soothing.%20And%20though%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20care%20for%20the%20chopped%20fish%20in%20my%20rice%20soup,%20the%20little%20fish%20and%20seaweed%20worked%20prefectly.%20Love%20the%20toasty%20crunch%20in%20between%20slurps.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Uzu%20set%20is%20essentially%20snapper%20sashimi%20with%20Japanese%20sesame%20dressing.%20This%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20on%20their%20regular%20menu,%20but%20as%20a%20special%20on%20the%20poster%20by%20the%20window%20instead.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFresh%20meaty%20pieces%20of%20fish,%20smothered%20with%20a%20sweet%20soy%20sesame%20sauce/paste.%20Topped%20with%20scallions%20and%20sesame.%20Seaweed%20and%20pickles%20on%20the%20side.%20$12.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20had%20a%20real%20creamy%20feel%20to%20it%20and%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20miss%20wasabi%20or%20soy%20sauce%20at%20all,%20which%20is%20a%20first%20for%20me.%20Raw%20fish%20in%20a%20new%20form.%20Nothing%20overly%20citrusy%20or%20strong.%20Just%20a%20mild%20aromatic%20sauce%20to%20compliment%20the%20delicate%20fish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20with%20the%20other%20set,%20you%20get%20to%20eat%20it%20as%20it%20is%20and%20then%20pour%20broth%20over%20it.%20I%20think%20it%20balances%20all%20the%20cold%20food,%20with%20that%20tummy%20warming%20feeling%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20meal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20yarn%20looking%20seaweed%20was%20a%20bit%20dry%20but%20worked%20really%20nicely%20in%20the%20soup%20as%20it%20absorbed%20all%20that%20yummy%20liquid.%20The%20broth%20itself%20is%20sweet%20and%20savory%20umami.%20I%20like%20ending%20a%20meal%20this%20way.%20Actually,%20I%20remember%20doing%20this%20as%20a%20kid,%20with%20pork%20or%20chicken%20soup%20my%20mama%20made.%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20Chinese%20thing%20to%20end%20the%20meal%20with%20soup,%20at%20least%20at%20home.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20less%20adventurous,%20they%20also%20have%20these%20beautiful%20seafood%20bowls.%20Raw%20and%20broiled.%20Loaded%20with%20freshness%20from%20$13-$23.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPrices%20are%20reasonable%20and%20quality%20is%20good.%20The%20rice%20as%20with%20most%20places%20in%20Tokyo%20is%20phenomenal.%20Did%20I%20mention%20I%20ate%20all%20of%20it?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20a%20great%20place%20for%20a%20quick%20casual%20meal%20if%20you%20are%20around%20Akihabara%20and%20shopping%20at%20Yodabashi.%20Since%20it%E2%80%99s%20so%20close%20to%20us,%20I%20will%20be%20back%20for%20sure.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EP.S.%20Chubby%E2%80%99s%20Rating:%20www.udx-akibaichi.jp%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(by%20Akiharabara%20Station)%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
