I work for Chaffin Family Orchards which is a good old fashioned 5 generation family farm. We are located on 2,000 acres up against the famed Table Mountain in Oroville, California which is about 70 miles north of Sacramento. We have fresh fruit available year round. We use no cold storage. We also produce grassfed beef, lamb, goat, freerange broiler chickens and eggs. The farm utilizes symbiotic relationships to better enhance the environment and minimize inputs. For example when we started running sheep through the orchards we cut our fuel costs by about 80%. The sheep graze the weeds that would otherwise need to be disced as they would start to choke out the trees. Instead the sheep eat them and we get two crops on the same acre for a greater benefit to the environment. Now we run all the different classes of livestock through the orchards at different times of the year, using the animals as land management tools utilizing each one’s strength to achieve a desired effect.
My wife and I have been ranching together for the last 10 years. We knew that our conventional backgrounds would not serve us as well in the future of food production. We were looking for a place to work that farmed organically, sold local, utilized diversity, and produced crops on a viable commercial scale, neither too big nor too small. We found all that and more here at Chaffin Orchards. My wife works as the nanny for the owners little boy Josh who is in love with everything chicken. Our 10 month old comes to work with us and helps wherever he can. My job mostly lies around customer relations and sales but everyday is different and I work to fill holes as needed.
