First post here!
Always on the look-out for more sites to "talk" about food and cooking.
I'm a semi-retired teacher... working with special needs kids & loving it.
I like to start by asking two questions.
ONE: Have you had any major kitchen fails that you're willing to share. Mine was a beef wellington at about 19-20 yo. TOTALLY comfortable in kitchen by then. Dad saw it made on a PBS cooking show... only thing available way back then. Seemed simple enough. Looked FABULOUS... but we nearly hadda get a hammer and chisel to get the pastry crust off!?! Luckily, big $$ tenderloin inside was cooked PERFECTLY medium rare bordering on rare... as we liked it.
TWO: Are you a yard sale or thrift store junkie? Have made some fabulous kitchen finds at yard sales & thrift stores. A Cuisinart food processor with 8-10 different slicing/shredding/grating blades... for $8! A "vintage" Kitchenaid crank up/down stand mixer (with bowl, whisk, paddle & dough hook) for $19.99! Most recent, a messa Fiestaware dishes... kinda butter yellow... 8 dinner & salad/sandwich plates, 6 mugs & 4 cereal/soup bowls for $49... NO chips/cracks or signs of serious use.

Several years ago I was making homemade Kahlua to give as Christmas presents. Apparently, I was exhausted & fell asleep at the kitchen table while waiting for it to *cook down*. I awoke to the smell of something burning, which turned out to be the base for the Kahlua. The smell was gag worthy and it had overflowed & gone down into the annals of our 1950's O'Keefe & Merritt cook top. It was gummy, burned coffee & sugar that took me literally weeks to get clean again. Of course, that was before I learned the trick about placing a wooden spoon across the top of a pan to prevent such mishaps.
Fortunately, the hard learned lessons are always the ones that *stick* with you the longest. I certainly won't ever forget it...
Liz I just joined and saw your post about the Kahlua, I used to make the one that used the ever-clear not the vodka. My friends want me to make it next year at Christmas so am going to dust off my recipe and try it again.
