%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDid%20you%20know%20that%20Stamford%E2%80%99s%20motto%20is%20%E2%80%9CStamford:%20the%20city%20that%20works?%E2%80%9D%20It%E2%80%99s%20kind%20of%20prosaic%20until%20you%20realize%20how%20many%20companies%20have%20offices%20here:%20from%20international%20banks%20to%20cosmetic%20giants%20to%20The%20Maury%20Povich%20Show.%20(Seriously%E2%80%93the%20studio%20where%20it,%20Jerry%20Springer%20and%20the%20show%20starring%20one%20of%20Jerry%20Springer%E2%80%99s%20security%20guys%20is%20on%20the%20next%20street%20over%20from%20us,%20a%20factoid%20that%20delighted%20my%20father-in-law%20to%20no%20end%20when%20we%20took%20him%20on%20a%20tour%20of%20our%20neighborhood.)%20It%E2%80%99s%20a%20good%20thing%20because%20all%20of%20those%20workers%20help%20support%20the%20local%20restaurant%20scene,%20but%20since%20most%20of%20them%20are%20commuting%20from%20other%20places,%20there%20seems%20to%20be%20a%20dearth%20of%20weekend%20brunch%20options%20around%20here.%20Even%20though%20we%20were%20never%20big%20brunch%20people%20when%20we%20lived%20in%20New%20York,%20it%20was%20oddly%20comforting%20to%20see%20all%20of%20those%20people%20out%20and%20about%20on%20a%20Saturday%20or%20Sunday%20diving%20into%20steak%20and%20eggs%20and%20sipping%20mimosas.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere,%20not%20so%20much.%20Maybe%20when%20spring%20comes%20I%E2%80%99ll%20do%20a%20little%20more%20research,%20but%20for%20now%20we%E2%80%99re%20on%20our%20own%20if%20we%20have%20a%20craving%20for%20brunch%20food.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20why%20I%20am%20so%20glad%20that%20we%20have%20%E2%80%98wichcraft%20in%20our%20lives%20now:%20while%20all%20of%20the%20sandwiches%20we%E2%80%99ve%20tried%20from%20it%20are%20delicious%20and%20make%20for%20simple%20meals,%20the%20breakfast%20sandwiches%20in%20particular%20are%20just%20enough%20to%20feel%20satisfied%20without%20that%20post-brunch%20sensation%20of%20having%20eaten%20too%20much.%20(As%20people%20who%20make%20Big%20Deals%20out%20of%20our%20dinners%20on%20the%20weekends,%20this%20is%20an%20important%20consideration.)%20So%20when%20I%20suggested%20making%20brunch%20on%20New%20Year%E2%80%99s%20last%20month,%20Michael%20made%20it%20clear%20that%20he%20didn%E2%80%99t%20want%20anything%20too%20filling%20because%20he%20would%20be%20making%20cocido%20later%20in%20the%20day.%20An%20open-faced%20sandwich%20of%20goat%20cheese%20and%20marmalade%20seemed%20like%20it%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20interfere%20with%20those%20plans,%20and%20so%20off%20to%20work%20I%20went.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20only%20mildly%20annoying%20part%20of%20making%20this%20sandwich%20is%20slicing%20through%2025%20kumquats.%20The%20instructions%20have%20you%20remove%20the%20seeds%20as%20well,%20but%20I%20gave%20up%20on%20that%20two%20kumquats%20in%20and%20frankly,%20neither%20Michael%20nor%20I%20really%20noticed%20any%20errant%20pips.%20Slicing%20aside,%20everything%20else%20comes%20together%20easily%E2%80%93you%20mix%201/4%20cup%20each%20water%20and%20sugar%20to%20dissolve,%20add%20in%20the%20fruit,%20some%20black%20pepper,%20and%20a%20rosemary%20sprig,%20let%20it%20simmer%20for%2010-15%20minutes,%20let%20it%20cool,%20and%20then%20spoon%20over%20toast%20that%E2%80%99s%20been%20given%20a%20generous%20layer%20of%20goat%20cheese.%20It%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20quite%20as%20translucent%20as%20the%20photo%20in%20the%20book,%20but%20it%20was%20tart%20and%20not%20too%20sweet%20and%20overall%20really%20tasty.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20may%20not%20be%20steak%20and%20eggs%20(and%20eggs%20and%20steak),%20but%20it%20made%20for%20a%20pretty%20satisfying%20brunch%20meal%20that%20didn%E2%80%99t%20require%20a%20dizzying%20amount%20of%20work%20to%20accomplish.%20That%20said,%20there%20is%20a%20steak-and-egg%20sandwich%20listed%20with%20the%20other%20breakfast%20sandwiches%E2%80%94that%20might%20be%20the%20key%20to%20get%20Michael%20to%20fully%20embrace%20making%20brunch%20at%20home%20more%20often.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
