.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpicy%20Black%20Bean%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh%20January,%20we%20meet%20again.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20that%20the%20holidays%20are%20over,%20New%20York%20has%20a%20tendency%20to%20descend%20into%20its%20winter-long%20hibernation.%20No%20one%20wants%20to%20do%20anything%20because%20it%E2%80%99s%20either%20snowing,%20has%20snowed%20or%20is%20just%20too%20damn%20cold%20outside,%20so%20you%20can%20either%20pull%20on%20the%20Hunter%20boots%20and%20see%20what%E2%80%99s%20shaking%20at%20the%20local%20watering%20holes%20a%20block%20or%20two%20away,%20or%20you%20only%20venture%20out%20to%20collect%20provisions%20from%20Fairway%20and%20the%20local%20wine%20shop%20and%20cocoon%20in%20your%20apartment.%20It%E2%80%99s%20the%20perfect%20excuse%20to%20spend%20the%20morning%20flipping%20through%20cookbooks,%20particularly%20new%20ones%20acquired%20during%20the%20holidays,%20looking%20for%20that%20perfect%20project%20to%20warm%20up%20the%20apartment%E2%80%A6but%20there%20is%20also%20the%20temptation%20to%20want%20to%20indulge%20in%20comfort%20foods%20because%20it%20is%20so%20cold%20outside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpicy%20Black%20Bean%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20I%E2%80%99m%20all%20for%20succumbing%20to%20temptation%20(December%E2%80%99s%20below-average%20temperatures%20certainly%20urged%20our%20inclination%20to%20braise%20anything%20that%20came%20in%20our%20way),%20there%20is%20something%20to%20be%20said%20for%20injecting%20warm-but-lighter%20meals%20into%20the%20mix%20as%20the%20new%20year%20starts.%20Having%20worked%20in%20several%20food%20categories%20that%20do%20a%20lot%20of%20promotion%20during%20this%20time%20of%20year,%20I%E2%80%99m%20probably%20even%20more%20tired%20than%20all%20of%20you%20in%20seeing%20all%20of%20the%20resolutions-themed%20ads%20and%20content%20out%20there%20that%E2%80%99s%20meant%20to%20shame%20us%20all%20for%20daring%20to%20indulge%20at%20the%20end%20of%20last%20year.%20So%20I%20present%20this%20dish%20to%20you%20as%20a%20compromise%20of%20sorts:%20it%E2%80%99s%20spicy,%20it%E2%80%99s%20vegetarian-friendly,%20and%20it%20involves%20my%20favorite%20soup%20ingredient:%20wine.%20A%20cup%20of%20red%20wine%20will%20add%20body%20to%20any%20vegetarian%20soup%20out%20there,%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20a%20lot%20more%20interesting%20than%20only%20relying%20on%203%20cups%20of%20water%20to%20create%20your%20soup%E2%80%99s%20broth.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20also%20wanted%20to%20up%20the%20spice%20content%20to%20help%20clear%20out%20the%20sinuses,%20so%20when%20I%20poured%20that%20cup%20of%20Temperanillo%20I%20also%20grabbed%20my%20piment%C3%B3n%20de%20la%20vera%20to%20add%20a%20smoky%20element%20to%20the%20party.%20I%20was%20worried%20that%20it%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20come%20through%20considering%20the%20use%20of%20cumin%20and%20chile%20powder,%20but%20I%20could%20definitely%20taste%20it%20off%20of%20the%20back%20of%20my%20tongue.%20Even%20Michael,%20who%20was%20sidelined%20on%20the%20couch%20after%20catching%20the%20bug%20I%20had%20on%20New%20Year%E2%80%99s,%20said%20that%20the%20soup%20was%20delicious%20and%20could%20eat%20a%20bowl%20of%20it%E2%80%93and%20he%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20eating%20much%20of%20anything%20that%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20be%20sure%20to%20finish%20it%20with%20a%20generous%20squeeze%20of%20lime%20juice%20to%20add%20the%20perfect%20balance%20of%20spice%20and%20acidity,%20and%20you%20have%20a%20bowl%20of%20comfort%20that%20also%20helps%20you%20feel%20a%20little%20bit%20virtuous.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpicy%20Black%20Bean%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eadapted%20from%20Gourmet%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eserves%204%20as%20a%20first%20course,%20or%202%20very%20hungry%20people%20on%20its%20own.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOver%20medium%20heat,%20heat%20the%20oil%20in%20a%20heavy%20pot%20and%20add%20the%20onion,%20garlic,%20chile,%20cumin,%20chili%20powder,%20oregano,%20paprika%20and%20a%20few%20pinches%20of%20salt%20and%20saute%20until%20they%20have%20started%20to%20brown,%20about%206%20or%207%20minutes.%20Add%20the%20beans,%20wine,%20water%20and%20bay%20leaf%20and%20bring%20to%20a%20simmer%20for%2015%20minutes,%20letting%20it%20reduce%20slightly.%20Remove%20the%20bay%20leaf%20and%20discard.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20about%202%20cups%20of%20soup%20to%20a%20blender%20or%20food%20processor%20and%20puree%20until%20smooth,%20using%20caution%20when%20handling%20hot%20liquids.%20Return%20the%20puree%20to%20the%20soup%20and%20heat%20over%20medium-low%20heat,%20stirring%20constantly%20for%20about%205%20minutes,%20adding%20more%20salt%20to%20taste.%20Ladle%20into%20bowls,%20garnish%20with%20cliantro%20and%20lime%20juice%20and%20serve%20immediately.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
