%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoasted%20Grape%20and%20Goat%20Cheese%20Bruschette%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20a%20rule,%20I%20try%20not%20to%20be%20too%20precious%20about%20my%20cookbooks.%20They%E2%80%99re%20meant%20to%20be%20practical,%20after%20all,%20and%20the%20best%20ones%20should%20bear%20the%20stains%20of%20cooking:%20the%20pages%20a%20little%20warped%20from%20sauce%20splatters,%20little%20smudges%20here%20and%20there%20on%20the%20edges,%20even%20pages%20escaping%20the%20binding%20after%20years%20and%20years%20of%20use.%20When%20I%20pull%20a%20book%20from%20the%20shelf%20and%20sit%20down%20on%20the%20couch%20to%20browse%20it,%20those%20little%20signs%20of%20wear%20and%20tear%20remind%20me%20of%20successful%20(and%20even%20the%20less-than-successful)%20meals.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20practical%20outlook%20was%20almost%20turned%20upside%20down%20when%20I%20unwrapped%20a%20copy%20of%20Polpo%20on%20Christmas%20Day,%20because%20in%20my%20hands%20was%20quite%20possibly%20the%20most%20aesthetically%20pleasing%20cookbook%20I%20ever%20had%20the%20pleasure%20of%20owning.%20I%20instantly%20loved%20everything%20about%20it:%20the%20typeface,%20the%20photography,%20the%20paper%20used%20for%20the%20pages.%20But%20the%20absolute%20neatest%20visual%20aspect%20about%20this%20book%20is%20the%20spine::%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20cool%20is%20that?%20And%20then%20I%20found%20this%20fantastic%20article%20from%20The%20Paris%20Review%20a%20few%20days%20later%20on%20the%20evolution%20of%20the%20bookshelf%20and%20that%20back%20in%20the%20days%20when%20books%20were%20primarily%20found%20in%20monasteries%20they%20would%20be%20placed%20with%20the%20front%20edges%20out,%20all%20ornately%20illustrated.%20But%20I%20digress.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPericatelli%20in%20salsa%20(of%20onions,%20anchovy%20and%20white%20wine)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20pretty%20as%20this%20book%20is,%20the%20recipes%20are%20even%20better:%20simple%20and%20unpretentious.%20Some%20conversions%20need%20to%20be%20made%20as%20these%20come%20from%20two%20London%20restaurants%20so%20everything%20is%20in%20metric%20units%20and%20oven%20temperatures%20are%20expressed%20in%20Celsius/Gas,%20but%20those%20are%20easy%20enough%20to%20switch%20over.%20(Especially%20if%20you%20or%20someone%20you%20live%20with%20is%20adept%20with%20converting%20Celsius%20to%20Fahrenheit%20in%20their%20head%20quickly.)%20The%20recipes%20are%20so%20straightforward,%20in%20fact,%20that%20we%20were%20able%20to%20make%20a%20three-course%20meal%20for%20the%20two%20of%20us%20in%20about%20two%20hours,%20with%20nary%20a%20stressful%20moment%20between%20us.%20And%20that%20includes%20making%20a%20tomato%20sauce%20for%20the%20meatballs%20and%20sweating%20onions%20for%20the%20pasta%20dish%20for%20about%20an%20hour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELamb%20and%20Pistachio%20Meatballs%20in%20Tomato%20Sauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20those%20meatballs%20and%20the%20pericatelli%20came%20out%20quite%20well,%20if%20ever%20so%20slightly%20under-seasoned.%20(A%20quick%20hit%20of%20sea%20salt%20took%20care%20of%20that%20issue.)%20But%20what%20came%20out%20really%20well%20was%20our%20antipasti:%20a%20bruschette%20with%20goat%20cheese,%20garlic,%20roasted%20red%20grapes,%20walnuts,%20pistachios,%20and%20honey.%20Given%20the%20work%20ahead%20of%20us%20I%20thought%20a%20nice%20snack%20would%20be%20a%20good%20idea,%20and%20this%20was%20just%20the%20right%20size%20to%20fuel%20us%20through%20the%20rest%20of%20dinner%20prep.%20It%E2%80%99s%20light%20but%20flavorful,%20and%20could%20actually%20probably%20work%20as%20a%20dessert%20course%20if%20you%20are%20in%20the%20mood%20for%20something%20savory%20and%20sweet%20in%20one%20dish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoasted%20Grape%20and%20Goat%20Cheese%20Bruschette%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eadapted%20from%20Polpo%20by%20Russell%20Norman%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%202%20bruschette%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHalf%20of%20a%20small%20baguette,%20split%20lengthwise%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20375%20degrees,%20and%20line%20a%20half%20sheet%20pan%20with%20aluminum%20foil.%20Place%20the%20grapes%20on%20one%20half%20of%20the%20pan%20and%20toss%20with%20the%20herbs%20and%20some%20salt%20and%20pepper.%20Roast%20for%2010-12%20minutes.%20Halfway%20through%20roasting,%20shake%20the%20pan%20to%20toss%20the%20grapes,%20and%20place%20the%20nuts%20onto%20the%20other%20half%20of%20the%20pan.%20(I%20make%20little%20wells%20using%20aluminum%20foil%20for%20easy%20placement).%20Take%20the%20pan%20out,%20let%20cool,%20and%20either%20grill%20or%20broil%20the%20bread%20for%202-3%20minutes%20to%20get%20some%20color.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERub%20the%20garlic%20clove%20over%20the%20bread,%20then%20spread%20the%20goat%20cheese%20over%20each%20slice%20and%20top%20with%20grapes,%20nuts,%20and%20a%20drizzle%20of%20honey.%20Serve%20immediately.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
