%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFarfalle%20with%20Crab,%20Roasted%20Garlic,%20Leeks%20and%20Chives%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShopping%20in%20New%20York,%20as%20I%20am%20wont%20to%20chronicle,%20is%20a%20beast%20of%20a%20task%20to%20do%20some%20days.%20Going%20to%20Fairway%20can%20be%20a%20drag%E2%80%93walking%20there%20is%20great,%20of%20course,%20because%20you%E2%80%99re%20assaulted%20with%20the%20aromas%20emanating%20from%20Dinosaur%20Bar-BQ%20as%20you%20walk%20down%20125th%20St.%20As%20an%20added%20bonus,%20you%20are%20greeted%20with%20the%20cooling%20breezes%20of%20the%20Hudson%20(well,%20only%20in%20the%20summertime);%20as%20for%20this%20time%20of%20year%20the%20river%20breeze%20hits%20at%20you%20like%20knives.%20And%20then,%20after%20tussling%20about%20and%20trying%20not%20to%20whack%20innocent%20kids%20with%20your%20handbag%20and%20finding%20the%20shortest%20line%20possible%20(almost%20coming%20to%20blows%20at%20several%20parts%20of%20that%20experience)%20you%E2%80%99re%20welcome%20to%20walk%20home%20with%20a%20good%20forty%20pounds%20of%20groceries%20hanging%20from%20your%20person%20and%20a%20mile-long%20walk%20home%20that%20includes%20five%20very%20steep%20blocks%20uphill.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20much%20as%20I%20love%20Fairway%20and%20its%20selection,%20there%20are%20days%20when%20I%E2%80%99m%20happy%20to%20avoid%20having%20to%20go%20there,%20like%20on%20unexpectedly%20snowy%20or%20rainy%20weekends%20when%20Fresh%20Direct%20works%20in%20a%20pinch,%20or%20after%20a%20weekend%20of%20traveling.%20I%E2%80%99m%20also%20always%20in%20search%20of%20interesting%20markets%20to%20frequent%20that%20might%20alleviate%20the%20Fairway%20load%20a%20bit,%20especially%20if%20we%E2%80%99re%20going%20into%20a%20neighborhood%20that%E2%80%99s%20unfamiliar%20and%20the%20market%20in%20question%20is%20particularly%20interesting.%20It%E2%80%99s%20how%20we%20ended%20up%20at%20Essex%20Market%20a%20few%20weeks%20ago%20and,%20well,%20we%20were%20disappointed.%20Were%20it%20our%20neighborhood%20market%20rife%20with%20neighborhood%20color,%20but%20as%20a%20destination%20market%20it%20came%20up%20rather%20lacking.%20Nothing%20in%20the%20two%20butchers%E2%80%99%20cases%20inspired%20MIchael,%20and%20even%20the%20reasonably%20priced%20produced%20like%20poblano%20peppers%20didn%E2%80%99t%20look%20terribly%20good.%20We%20ended%20up%20walking%20around%20in%20circles%20for%20a%20good%20half-hour%20and%20buying%20absolutely%20nothing,%20save%20for%20some%20leeks%20and%20some%20lemons%20that%20were%20on%20serious%20sale.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMaking%20our%20way%20back%20home,%20we%20started%20to%20talk%20about%20what%20we%20wanted%20to%20make,%20and%20so%20we%20went%20to%20Whole%20Foods%20UWS%20to%20see%20what%20we%20had%20at%20our%20disposal.%20Michael%20wanted%20some%20steak%20and%20I%20wanted%20pasta%20(shocking%20on%20both%20counts,%20I%20know)%20and%20Michael%20had%20the%20rather%20ingenious%20idea%20to%20do%20a%20surf%20and%20turf%20night%E2%80%93something%20new%20to%20us%20both,%20I%20should%20say%E2%80%93once%20he%20saw%20the%20delicious%20crab%20claws%20on%20special%20and%20thought%20they%E2%80%99d%20be%20a%20lovely%20accompianment%20to%20my%20pasta%20of%20many%20onion%20members.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20should%20amend%20this%20by%20saying%20that%20yes%E2%80%93I%20wanted%20to%20make%20a%20pasta%20dish%20that%20had%20roasted%20garlic,%20leeks%20and%20chives%20in%20it.%20In%20my%20mind%20there%20is%20nothing%20wrong%20with%20this%20combination,%20and%20in%20execution%20it%20ended%20up%20tasting%20pretty%20phenomenal%20and%20not%20too%20onion-y.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERegardless,%20it%20ended%20up%20being%20a%20great%20original%20recipe%20that%20is%20mellow%20and%20delicious,%20and%20adding%20crab%20just%20gives%20it%20an%20extra%20edge%20of%20flavor.%20I%E2%80%99ll%20leave%20the%20turf%20conversation%20to%20Michael.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFarfalle%20with%20Crab,%20Roasted%20Garlic,%20Leeks%20and%20Chives%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eserves%204%20as%20a%20main%20course%20and%206%20as%20a%20starter%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAbout%20an%20hour%20before%20you%20want%20to%20start%20cooking%20the%20rest%20of%20of%20the%20dish,%20start%20roasting%20the%20garlic.%20I%20used%20the%20easy%20instructions%20at%20Simply%20Recipes%20to%20roast%20six%20(yes,%20six)%20heads%20of%20the%20stuff,%20but%20believe%20me%20when%20I%20say%20that%20it%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20this%20all-powerful%20flavor.%20When%20warm%20enough%20to%20cool,%20squeeze%20as%20much%20of%20the%20garlic%20as%20you%20can%20into%20a%20bowl,%20whisk%20with%20a%20little%20olive%20oil%20and%20set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20heavy%20saute%20pan,%20heat%20a%20little%20more%20olive%20oil%20over%20medium%20heat%20and%20begin%20to%20cook%20the%20leeks,%20seasoning%20them%20with%20a%20little%20salt.%20When%20they%20get%20all%20brown%20and%20delicious,%20deglaze%20with%20a%20the%20cognac%20and,%20if%20you%E2%80%99re%20feeling%20adventurous%20that%20is,%20ignite%20the%20cognac%20using%20a%20culinary%20torch.%20Let%20flames%20die%20down%20and%20then%20return%20to%20the%20heat,%20albeit%20now%20on%20medium%20low%20to%20low.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20the%20leeks%20cook%20bring%20a%20large%20pot%20of%20water%20to%20a%20boil%20and%20season%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper.%20Add%20in%20the%20pasta%20and%20cook%20until%20about%20a%20minute%20or%20two%20less%20than%20package%20directions,%20stirring%20to%20keep%20pasta%20moving.%20Reserve%20a%20large%20cup%20full%20of%20cooking%20water%20(I%20used%20a%20tall%20mug)%20and%20when%20slightly%20al%20dente,%20drain%20and%20return%20to%20pot.%20When%20leeks%20are%20complete%20add%20the%20pasta%20and%20the%20roasted%20garlic%20puree%20to%20the%20pan,%20adding%20starchy%20water%20to%20help%20evenly%20coat%20the%20pasta,%20keeping%20the%20heat%20on%20very%20low%20just%20to%20keep%20the%20pasta%20warm%20while%20you%20tear%20apart%20the%20crabmeat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20crab%20element%20is%20definitely%20a%20point%20where%20if%20you%20have%20an%20extra%20set%20of%20hands,%20employ%20them%20to%20steam%20the%20crab%20legs.%20We%20used%20Alton%20Brown%E2%80%99s%20method%20(using%20some%20chives%20for%20the%20dill)%20because%20it%20was%20simple%20and%20effective%20and%20really%20easy%20to%20do%E2%80%93the%20tough%20part%20is%20fishing%20out%20all%20of%20that%20crab%20meat%20in%20a%20quick%20way.%20Crack%20the%20legs%20any%20way%20you%20can%20and%20fish%20out%20the%20meat,%20adding%20it%20to%20the%20pasta%20as%20you%20go.%20Once%20you%20have%20a%20tidy%20pile%20of%20crabmeat%20on%20your%20pasta,%20toss%20again%20to%20coat%20(and%20add%20a%20little%20more%20water%20if%20necessary)%20and%20serve%20immediately%20in%20bowls,%20garnishing%20with%20the%20chives.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
