.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETequila-Lime%20Grilled%20Skirt%20Steak%20with%20Grilled%20Scallions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20me%20start%20this%20out%20by%20saying%20that%20Amores%20Perros%20is%20a%20dark%20movie.%20It%20is%20disturbing,%20weird,%20and%20very%20graphic%20because%20it%20delves%20into%20the%20world%20of%20dogfighting%20in%20Mexico%20City%20(amongst%20other%20stories),%20and%20that%20alone%20means%20that%20it%20will%20be%20difficult%20for%20any%20dog%20lover%20to%20watch.%20That%20said,%20it%E2%80%99s%20also%20a%20very%20thought-provoking%20movie:%20it%E2%80%99s%20significantly%20better%20than%20Babel%20because%20it%20feels%20much%20more%20authentic;%20you%20get%20the%20desperation,%20sorrow%20and%20anger%20that%20motivates%20these%20characters%20and%20pulsates%20throughout%20the%20film%20and%20it%20becomes%20a%20two-hour%20cinematic%20version%20of%20putting%20cigarettes%20out%20on%20your%20arm.%20OK,%20maybe%20not%20that%20severe,%20but%20the%20film%20is%20tough%20to%20watch%20given%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20chock%20full%20of%20brutal%20realism.%20What%20can%20I%20say?%20Sometimes,%20all%20I%20want%20to%20watch%20is%20a%20morose%20film,%20and%20I%20must%20own%20to%20a%20strong%20curiosity%20in%20watching%20these%20modern%20films%20from%20Mexican%20directors%20that%20got%20everyone%20in%20a%20tizzy%20at%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%20aughts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20all%20fairness,%20I%20wanted%20to%20get%20Y%20tu%20mam%C3%A1%20tambi%C3%A9n%20to%20celebrate%20Michael%E2%80%99s%20birthday%20but%20it%E2%80%99s%20horribly%20unavailable%E2%80%93my%20copy%20will%20hopefully%20be%20here%20before%20Labor%20day,%20so%20a%20horribly%20violent%20movie%20had%20to%20go%20in%20its%20stead.%20The%20fact%20that%20I%20spent%205%20bucks%20on%20it%20justified%20the%20cost%E2%80%93we%E2%80%99d%20easily%20spend%20that%20on%20an%20On-Demand%20flick,%20and%20this%20way%20I%20can%20watch%20it%20again%20(hey,%20my%20Spanish%20isn%E2%80%99t%20going%20to%20get%20better%20on%20its%20own)%20and/or%20loan%20it%20out%20at%20will%20without%20that%20guilty%20feeling%20one%20can%20get%20for%20shelling%20out%20for%20a%20DVD.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThree-Cheese%20Quesadillas%20with%20Arbol%20Chile%20and%20Roasted%20Tomato%20Salsa%20and%20Grilled%20Scallions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20feels%20rather%20pedestrian%20to%20talk%20about%20the%20meal%20that%20we%20made%20prior%20to%20watching%20this%20film,%20because%20how%20can%20any%20meal%20match%20the%20anguish%20and%20the%20intensity%20of%20a%20film%20like%20Amores%20perros?%20As%20this%20is%20a%20food%20blog%20and%20not%20a%20film%20blog,%20however,%20onward%20I%20must%20march.%20We%20feasted%20on%20quesadillas%20much%20like%20we%20always%20do%20because%20they%20are%20easy%20and%20are%20more%20sumptuous%20vehicles%20for%20homemade%20salsa%20compared%20to%20chips,%20only%20this%20time%20I%20switched%20up%20the%20three-cheese%20mix%20to%20include%20queso%20blanco,%20queso%20quesadilla%20and%20an%20extra%20sharp%20Wisconsin%20cheddar%20to%20ostensibly%20add%20some%20bite%20to%20them.%20I%20must%20be%20honest%20here:%20using%20New%20York%20extra%20sharp%20cheddar%20would%20have%20been%20a%20more%20useful%20addition%E2%80%93it%E2%80%99s%20a%20little%20bolder.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20real%20stars%20of%20the%20evening%20however%20were%20the%20arbol%20chile%20salsa%20(I%20told%20quesadillas%20make%20great%20salsa-to-mouth%20transporters!)%20and%20the%20tequila-lime%20grilled%20skirt%20steak%20that%20we%20just%20ate%20with%20our%20fingers%20as%20folding%20the%20slices%20into%20tortillas%20took%20up%20far%20too%20much%20time.%20Both%20came%20from%20Antojitos,%20naturalmente%E2%80%93and%20yes%20there%20are%20days%20when%20I%20ask%20myself%20if%20this%20blog%20is%20basically%20a%20%E2%80%9Cblog-through%E2%80%9D%20of%20Barcelona%20and%20Antojitos%E2%80%93and%20both%20were%20really,%20really%20simple.%20The%20instructions%20were%20so%20easy%20for%20the%20steak:%20marinated%20for%2030%20minutes%20in%20a%20mixture%20of%20tequila%20blanco,%20lime%20and%20garlic,%20throw%20onto%20a%20hot%20grill%20and%20cook%20each%20side%20for%20about%20two%20minutes.%20Doneness%20can%20be%20tested%20by%20pressing%20into%20the%20steak%E2%80%93if%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20bounce%20back%20immediately%20it%20is%20still%20too%20rare.%20The%20cookbook%20suggests%20serving%20it%20alongside%20grilled%20scallions,%20which%20we%20did%E2%80%93but%20most%20of%20them%20ended%20up%20in%20our%20mouths%20before%20we%20sat%20down%20to%20eat.%20Oops.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%20said,%20I%20urge%20you%20to%20try%20the%20salsa%20now%20while%20the%20tomatoes%20are%20at%20their%20peak%E2%80%93we%20deviated%20from%20the%20original%20recipe%20because%20Michael%20wanted%20another%20go%20at%20those%20delicious%20oven-roasted%20tomatoes%20he%20made%20on%20his%20birthday,%20so%20I%20used%20four%20of%20them%20for%20the%20salsa%20instead%20of%20cooking%20the%20tomatoes%20in%20the%20oil%20along%20with%20the%20onions%20and%20garlic.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%C3%81rbol%20Chile%20and%20Roasted%20Tomato%20Salsa%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eadapted%20from%20Antojitos%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20the%20oil%20over%20medium-low%20heat%20and%20add%20the%20onions%20and%20garlic%20and%20cook,%20stirring%20occasionally%20with%20a%20wooden%20spoon,%20for%20about%2015%20to%20twenty%20minutes%20or%20until%20soft.%20Remove%20from%20heat%20and%20let%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeanwhile,%20add%20another%20tablespoon%20of%20oil%20to%20a%20skillet%20and%20gently%20toast%20the%20%C3%A1rbol%20chiles%20for%20about%2015%20seconds%20or%20until%20they%20are%20fragrant;%20remove%20and%20let%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20everything%20is%20cool%20enough%20to%20touch,%20add%20them%20all%20to%20a%20blender%20or%20food%20processor%20and%20blend%20until%20smooth%20(they%20say%20until%20the%20consistency%20of%20heavy%20cream),%20and%20then%20bring%20back%20to%20the%20saucepan,%20bring%20it%20to%20medium%20heat%20and%20cook%20for%20about%203%20minutes,%20stirring%20until%20the%20salsa%20emulsifies.%20Season%20with%20salt%20to%20taste.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20cool%20before%20serving%20it%20as%20a%20salsa%20de%20la%20mesa,%20or%20spoon%20directly%20over%20meat,%20poultry,%20or%20quesadillas.%20Be%20blown%20away%20by%20how%20easy%20this%20is.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
