%20While%20it%20was%20inevitable%20that%20we%20were%20going%20to%20celebrate%20its%20return%20after%20at%2017-month%20long%20hiatus%20with%20food%20and%20drink,%20the%20fact%20that%20you%20only%20rarely%20see%20any%20of%20the%20characters%20with%20food%20(with%20none%20of%20it%20looking%20all%20that%20appetizing%20to%20boot)%20meant%20that%20I%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20going%20to%20adhere%20to%20any%20strict%20theme,%20save%20for%20insisting%20Michael%20make%20us%20a%20round%20of%20Old%20Fashioneds.%20Certain%20nods%20to%20the%20show,%20after%20all,%20must%20be%20made,%20and%20cocktails%20have%20always%20felt%20far%20more%20appropriate%20than%20food.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECaprese%20salad%20and%20old%20fashioneds.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBesides:%20we%20had%20finally%20gotten%20a%20couple%20of%20new%20half%20sheet%20pans%20at%20Chef%E2%80%99s%20the%20day%20before,%20and%20I%20was%20in%20the%20mood%20for%20homemade%20pizza.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20first%20one%20was%20inspired%20by%20two%20separate%20dishes,%20both%20from%20Barcelona%20Wine%20Bar:%20their%20classic%20tapa%20chorizos%20with%20sweet%20and%20sour%20figs%20and%20the%20coca%20we%20enjoyed%20at%20the%20Stamford%20location%20a%20couple%20of%20weeks%20ago%20that%20boasted%20caramelized%20onions%20and%20goat%20cheese.%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20sure%20why%20I%20never%20thought%20to%20put%20the%20sweet%20and%20sour%20figs%20on%20a%20pizza%20before,%20but%20I%E2%80%99m%20glad%20I%20finally%20did%E2%80%93with%20some%20shallot%20and%20some%20drunken%20goat%20cheese%20(i.e.%20goat%20cheese%20in%20which%20the%20rind%20has%20been%20rubbed%20in%20red%20wine),%20this%20was%20a%20rich%20pizza%20without%20being%20too%20heavy%20(as%20we%20had%20a%20second%20one%20to%20make)%20or%20too%20cheesy%20(as%20that%20would%20upset%20Michael%E2%80%99s%20stomach).%20For%20all%20I%20know,%20this%20was%20basically%20what%20we%20had%20at%20Barcelona%20without%20the%20caramelized%20onions,%20but,%20to%20paraphrase%20Pete%20Campbell%20from%20a%20season%20one%20episode,%20I%20arrived%20at%20it%20independently.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20second%20pizza%20was%20one%20that%20sounded%20good%20on%20paper,%20but%20didn%E2%80%99t%20quite%20come%20out%20the%20way%20I%20was%20hoping%20it%20would.%20I%20wanted%20to%20do%20a%20play%20on%20veal%20saltimbocca%20and%20have%20a%20pizza%20with%20ground%20veal,%20sage,%20prosciutto%20and%20some%20hard%20cheese.%20The%20pizza%20looked%20good,%20but%20the%20ground%20meat%20was%20a%20little%20too%20crumbly%20and%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20terribly%20neat%20to%20eat%20because%20the%20piave%20and%20romano%20cheeses%20I%20had%20laid%20down%20as%20a%20base%20were%20not%20enough%20to%20get%20the%20other%20toppings%20to%20cling%20to%20the%20dough.%20I%E2%80%99m%20pretty%20sure%20fresh%20mozzarella%20would%20do%20the%20trick%20nicely,%20but%20that%20will%20have%20to%20wait%20for%20another%20pizza%20night.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(via%20AMC)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20as%20for%20this%20new%20season%20of%20Mad%20Men,%20while%20I%E2%80%99m%20very%20glad%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20back,%20I%E2%80%99m%20also%20glad%20that%20we%E2%80%99re%20only%20getting%20one%20two-hour%20episode.%20Two%20hours%20of%20new%20material%20is%20just%20too%20much%20to%20take%20in%20all%20at%20once.%20The%20show%20is%20so%20excellently%20paced%20that%20makes%20it%20just%20right%20for%20seeing%20one%20hour%20a%20week,%20something%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20fully%20appreciate%20until%20we%20tried%20watching%20a%20few%20other%20shows%20while%20we%20waited%20for%20it%20to%20come%20back%20onto%20the%20air.%20Regardless,%20I%E2%80%99m%20looking%20forward%20to%20eleven%20more%20weeks%20with%20the%20SCDP%20crew.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESweet-and-Sour%20Fig%20Pizza%20with%20Goat%20Cheese%20and%20Shallots%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%20one%20pizza%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20half%20recipe%20of%20dough,%20with%20the%20other%20reserved%20for%20another%20pizza%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20the%20highest%20temperature%20possible%20(set%20%20the%20broil%20temperature%20on%20the%20baking%20setting%20if%20possible).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20figs,%20vinegars,%20brown%20sugar,%20water,%20and%20cinnamon%20into%20a%20saucepan.%20Bring%20up%20to%20a%20simmer%20and%20cook%20for%20about%2010-12%20minutes%20to%20let%20everything%20reduce%20to%20more%20of%20a%20syrup%20than%20a%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStretch%20the%20dough%20out%20to%20fit%20onto%20your%20stone%20or%20an%20upturned%20sheet%20pan,%20and%20use%20a%20fork%20to%20dimple%20the%20dough%20so%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20puff%20up%20too%20much%20while%20cooking.%20Blind-bake%20the%20dough%20for%20about%20six%20minutes,%20then%20take%20out%20of%20the%20oven,%20evenly%20spread%20the%20cheese%20,%20the%20shallots,%20and%20then%20the%20figs%20and%20sauce,%20and%20place%20back%20into%20the%20oven%20to%20cook%20for%20another%20six%20minutes.%20(Note:%20we%E2%80%99ll%20just%20pull%20the%20rack%20out%20and%20carefully%20add%20ingredients,%20as%20the%20pan%20will%20be%20very%20very%20hot%20at%20this%20point.)%20When%20the%20cheese%20is%20melted,%20remove%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20let%20cool%20on%20a%20cutting%20board%20and%20sprinkle%20thyme%20leaves%20over%20the%20pizza.%20Cut%20into%20slices%20and%20serve%20when%20pizza%20is%20cool%20enough%20to%20touch,%20and%20season%20with%20salt%20to%20taste.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
