Barley drinks are an excellent coolers for summer time. Easy to make, refreshing and healthy, Barley water is one of my favorite drink of any time. And now that my kids love the flavors too I make them often for my family. Try these quick energizer and am sure you will fall in love with it!

The Basic Barley water recipe is what you need first to make all other flavorful drinks. Hulled barley will be a very prudent choice for more of nutrition in your drink.

Pearl Barley...

Try the Barley drinks with the Hulled Barley which has more of nutrients intact in it due to the bran present on the grain.

Basic Barley Water

Ingredients;

1 cup of Pearl Barley (cracked or flour)

6 cups of water

Method: If you can get the Hulled Barley you can get maximum nutrition from this grain. I had pearl Barley with me and I crushed the grains in my blender for a few minutes.

Boil..boil my pearly Barley!

Pressure cooker is the best for quick cooking and boiling the Barley, it takes just 5 minutes on high flame for the grains to cook. Ye ou can boil the Barley in a broad vessel for 25-30 minutes on medium flame. Remove the vessel from heat and let it cool a little.

3 flavors infusing into the Barley water..

Filter the boiled Barley and take the strained liquid in another vessel. Add desired flavors and add ons for a perfect Barley drink.

This is the basic recipe for making a plain Barley water, you can drink it as it is if you don’t mind adding any flavors to it.

The moment of truth!

Cumin Flavored Barley Water

Ingredients;

(serves 2)

2 cups of Basic Barley water (above)

A pinch of Salt

1/4 tsp. roasted Cumin powder

A pinch of asafoetida

Method: Fill two glasses with the basic Barley water. Add salt, cumin powder and stir. Serve chilled with ice cubes. You can add a dash of lemon juice and ginger for extra flavors. But believe me it tastes good without these add ons

Lemony Barley water

Ingredients;

(serves 2)

Method: Take two cups of slightly warm Barley water and add all of the above ingredients into it. Cover it and keep aside for 15-20 minutes. Filter the water into serving glasses and serve chilled with crushed ice.

My favorite of all!

This Tangy Orange Barley drink is my kids’ favorite while me and my hubby go with the cumin flavors Barley drink.

Tangy Orange Barley water

Ingredients;

(serves 2)

2 cups of Basic Barley water

Honey as desired

Juice of one large Orange

1/4 tsp. of orange Zest

Method: Take two cups of Basic Barley water and add all of the above ingredients into it. Cover and keep it aside for 15-20 minutes. Filter the liquid and serve chilled with ice cubes.

Notes;

These Barley drinks are very easy to make and are refreshing with loads of nutrients in it. Can be stored in refrigerator for a day or two.

Add or exclude any flavors as you develop the taste for these Barley drinks.

Make it a day ahead and pack these healthy drinks to your office or for the kids snack time.

Try to get Hulled Barley for making these drinks, for more of fiber and other nutrients.

Add extra water if you don’t like the slight starchy taste of Barley.
