%20that%20we%20ordered%20Chinese.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHave%20I%20mentioned%20that%20she's%20my%20sous-chef?%20I%20think%20I%20have.%20It's%20hard%20to%20cook%20when%20she's%20not%20by%20my%20feet.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EToday,%20the%20Vet%20Hospital%20told%20me%20I%20could%20pick%20her%20up%20at%203pm.%20One%20of%20the%20beautiful%20things%20about%20having%20a%2013%20yr%20old%20is%20that%20she%20can%20walk%20over%20to%20the%20elementary%20school,%20pick%20up%20the%2011%20yr%20old%20and%20walk%20on%20home.%20Of%20course%20Em%20forgot%20her%20key%20this%20morning%20and%20I%20had%20to%20drop%20it%20off%20at%20the%20elementary%20school%20(because%20Middle%20School%20is%20a%20little%20like%20prison%20and%20won't%20let%20you%20see%20your%20kid%20at%20all%20during%20the%20day).%20So,%20I%20left%20later%20than%20I%20wanted,%20then%20got%20lost%20on%20the%20way,%20then%20got%20to%20the%20Animal%20Hospital%20and%20had%20to%20wait%20for%20the%20dog%20to%20be%20released,%20then%20drove%20home%20in%20rush%20hour%20traffic,%20and%20walked%20in%20the%20door%20only%20to%20fight%20with%20the%20girls%20because%20they'd%20been%20watching%20TV%20all%20afternoon%20and%20wanted%20to%20watch%20EVEN%20MORE%20because%20TV%20is%20like%20heroin%20when%20you're%20a%20pre-%20and%20a%20teen%20and%20the%20more%20you%20watch%20the%20more%20you%20absolutely%20must%20watch.%20Those%20two%20would%20watch%20TV%20'til%20their%20eyes%20bled.*%20And%20they%20weren't%20even%20watching%20good%20stuff%20-%20like%20the%20Simpsons,%20or%20The%20Office%20(their%20usual%20fare)%20-%20but%20total%20crap%20-%20ie:%20Wizards%20of%20Waverly%20Place%20and%20Look%20Alike.%20God.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20least%20it%20wasn't%20%22My%20Super%20Sweet%20Sixteen.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20wanted%20to%20make%20meatloaf%20tonight.%20I%20wanted%20to%20make%20meatloaf%20and%20mashed%20potatoes%20and%20green%20beans%20with%20orange%20slices%20(from%20the%20Lee%20Brother's%20new%20cookbook).%20Because%20I'd%20established%20a%20craving%20for%20this.%20But%20by%20the%20time%20I%20got%20back,%20I%20only%20had%2040%20minutes%20before%20Em's%20guitar%20lesson%20and%20that%20is%20simply%20not%20enough%20time%20for%20meatloaf.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20I%20made%20another%20one%20of%20my%20%22throw%20it%20all%20in%20one%20pot%20and%20hope%20for%20the%20best%20meals%22%20-%20and%20this%20one%20turned%20out%20ok%20and%20I%20decided%20to%20call%20it%20%22Ragu%22%20-%20after%20a%20recipe%20in%20a%20Nigella%20Lawson%20cookbook%20that%20has%20very%20little%20resemblance%20to%20the%20one%20I%20made%20up%20tonight,%20but%20what%20the%20hell.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBefore%20I%20even%20started%20to%20make%20dinner%20tonight%20I%20needed%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20this:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBecause%20it's%20been%20a%20crappy%20week.%20And%20it's%20only%20Tuesday.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*(by%20the%20way,%20Mads%20declares%20she%20wouldn't%20watch%20TV%20until%20her%20eyes%20bled,%20she'd%20play%20on%20the%20computer%20until%20her%20eyes%20bled%20-%20so,%20my%20bad)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20again,%20I%20had%20all%20this%20stuff%20in%20the%20fridge%20that%20I%20wanted%20to%20use%20up:%20some%202%20week%20old%20baby%20peppers%20-%20not%20quite%20wrinkly;%20cauliflower;%20some%20ground%20bison;%20some%20frozen%20green%20beans;%20an%20onion.%20Tossed%20it%20all%20in%20and%20it%20wasn't%20half%20bad.%20The%20beauty%20of%20the%20thing%20was%20that%20I%20didn't%20have%20quite%20enough%20meat%20for%20a%20whole%20meat%20loaf,%20but%20throwing%20it%20all%20in%20a%20pan%20with%20a%20pile%20of%20vegetables%20stretched%20the%20meat%20far%20and%20wide%20so%20that%20there%20were%20even%20leftovers%20for%20Smith%20to%20bring%20in%20the%20next%20day.%20Oh,%20and%20I%20threw%20these%20itty%20bitty%20potatoes%20I%20had%20left%20over%20from%20that%20bag%20of%20potatoes%20I%20bought%20last%20week%20into%20the%20toaster%20oven%20at%20425.%20They%20were%20so%20small%20they%20cooked%20in%20about%2040%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20went%20a%20little%20wild%20with%20the%20pictures%20today,%20so%20bear%20with%20me.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENot%20Nigella's%20Meat%20Ragu%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20lb%20of%20ground%20meat%20(whatever%20you've%20got:%20bison,%20turkey,%20chuck)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20yellow%20onion%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20or%202%20carrots%20(I%20chopped%20up%20a%20pack%20of%20baby%20carrots%20just%20to%20get%20them%20out%20out%20out.%20I%20get%20so%20sick%20of%20baby%20carrots%20-%20I%20don't%20know%20why%20I%20ever%20by%20them,%20no%20one%20ever%20eats%20them%20-%20and%20they're%20always%20dry%20as%20dirt)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPull%20out%20your%20biggest%20skillet%20and%20brown%20the%20meat%20in%20a%20little%20swirl%20of%20olive%20oil.%20Brown%20your%20meat,%20take%20it%20out,%20swirl%20in%20more%20olive%20oil%20if%20need%20be,%20return%20pan%20to%20heat,%20dump%20in%20onions,%20cook%20until%20almost%20translucent,%20dump%20in%20rest%20of%20vegetables%20except%20green%20beans%20(if%20frozen,%20if%20they're%20fresh%20dump%20them%20in%20now),%20add%20Worstershire,%20broth,%20thyme,%20bay%20leaf,%20salt%20and%20pepper%20to%20taste.%20Bring%20up%20to%20a%20simmer,%20and%20cook%20a%20few%20minutes%20until%20the%20vegetables%20are%20tender-ish%20(the%20cauliflower%20will%20be%20crispier%20than%20the%20rest,%20but%20I%20like%20it%20that%20way).%20Return%20meat%20to%20pan%20along%20with%20green%20beans.%20At%20this%20point%20you%20can%20either%20add%20the%20sour%20cream%20and%20stir%20it%20into%20everything,%20or%20you%20can%20plop%20it%20on%20top%20of%20the%20whole%20thing%20later.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20could%20also%20add%20a%20good%20handful%20of%20shredded%20cheddar%20if%20you%20have%20it,%20or%20maybe%20a%20little%20chutney%20(I%20didn't%20have%20either%20one.%20Damn.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20the%20finished%20thing:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20pictures%20of%20the%20girls%20hands,%20because%20they%20liked%20these%20pictures%20and%20asked%20me%20to%20put%20them%20in:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20here's%20my%20sous-chef%20cleaning%20up:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20missed%20her.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGlad%20she's%20home.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
