%20.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Finding%20the%20smudge%20known%20as%20Andromeda%20in%20the%20binoculars%20during%20some%20nighttime%20sky%20watching.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Figuring%20out%20a%20workaround%20after%20Max's%20light-up%20toothbrush%20died%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Not%20telling%20my%20grandmother%20about%20her%20surprise%2080th%20birthday%20dinner%20(keeping%20secrets%20is%20not%20one%20of%20my%20specialties%20in%20life).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Used%20a%20plunger%20without%20having%20to%20frantically%20call%20a%20loved%20one%20to%20find%20out%20if%20I%20a)%20did%20indeed%20need%20to%20use%20one%20b)%20how%20to%20actually%20use%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Managed%20to%20leave%20Whole%20Foods%20with%20only%20two%20cartons%20of%20candy%20instead%20of%20the%205%20(give%20or%20take)%20that%20I%20wanted%20to%20hoard.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Found%20a%20replacement%20monitor%20cord%20just%20lying%20in%20a%20drawer,%20and%20almost%20successfully%20swapped%20this%20never-been-used%20one%20for%20the%20extremely%20frayed,%20cat-chewed%20one%20that%20we%20had%20been%20using%20for%20far,%20far%20too%20long%20(this%20is%20notable%20because%20my%20brain%20actively%20refuses%20to%20learn%20anything%20that%20remotely%20pertains%20to%20hooking%20up%20electronic%20stuff,%20and%20I%20actually%20made%20the%20correct%20identification%20of%20where%20this%20cord%20goes).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E-Made%20and%20ate%20rice%20pudding,%20as%20I%20had%20previously%20never%20made%20a%20rice%20pudding.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhich%20brings%20me%20to%20our%20Creative%20Cooking%20Crew%20challenge%20entry%20for%20this%20month.%20%20This%20month%E2%80%99s%20challenge%20(hosted%20by%20Lazaro%20from%20Lazaro%20Cooks)%20is%20all%20about%20rice,%20asking%20us%20what%20we%20can%20do%20to%20transform,%20elevate,%20modernize%20or%20creatively%20spotlight%20it%20in%20a%20dish.%20%20Check%20back%20in%20a%20few%20days%20for%20a%20link%20to%20the%20roundup%20of%20everyone's%20dishes!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI've%20never%20been%20drawn%20to%20the%20idea%20of%20rice%20pudding.%20I%20was%20turned%20off%20by%20the%20idea%20of%20a%20non-savory%20use%20of%20rice.%20Texturally,%20the%20whole%20thing%20seemed%20utterly%20unappealing.%20Plus,%20my%20brain%20automatically%20equates%20pudding%20with%20chocolate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20am%20now%20ashamed%20of%20my%20audacity,%20the%20brazenness%20in%20that%20belief,%20my%20lack%20of%20imagination,%20my%20inability%20to%20see%20how%20delicious%20a%20pudding%20made%20from%20rice%20can%20be.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20now%20understand%20the%20appeal.%20Instead%20of%20repulsion,%20there%20is%20delight%20to%20be%20had%20in%20sinking%20your%20teeth%20into%20those%20little%20granules%20of%20rice,%20all%20puffed%20up%20from%20a%20nice,%20long%20cook%20in%20some%20milk,%20and%20suspended%20by%20a%20creamy%20and%20sweet%20concoction%20that%20struggles%20lovingly%20to%20hold%20the%20whole%20thing%20together.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERice%20pudding%20is%20also%20infinitely%20customizable,%20and%20it%20now%20seems%20ludicrous%20that%20I%20scoffed%20at%20it%20before.%20I%20used%20Bittman's%20How%20to%20Cook%20Everything%20to%20guide%20me%20through%20this%20whole%20new%20world%20of%20rice%20pudding.%20I%20was%20so%20extremely%20excited%20to%20see%20that%20the%20instructions%20amounted%20to%20basically%20-%20stir,%20put%20in%20oven,%20stir,%20put%20in%20oven,%20stir,%20put%20in%20oven.%20Exactly%20the%20kind%20of%20thing%20that%20one%20can%20handle%20with%20an%20active%20three%20year%20old%20demanding%20continuous%20attention.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20went%20with%20a%20combination%20of%20tangelo,%20hibiscus%20and%20coconut%20milk%20for%20this%20particular%20pudding.%20This%20is%20not%20really%20the%20result%20of%20a%20concerted%20effort,%20but%20one%20of%20those%20happy%20accidents%20in%20which%20mismatched%20ingredients%20all%20found%20a%20home%20with%20one%20another.%20I'm%20still%20not%20quite%20sure%20how%20it%20was%20decided%20that%20the%20home%20would%20be%20rice%20pudding.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20tangelos%20were%20extremely%20hard%20to%20not%20bring%20home.%20So%20bright,%20almost%20glaringly%20so,%20just%20about%20ready%20to%20burst%20with%20that%20sweet%20and%20tangy%20juice.%20So%20home%20with%20me%20they%20went.%20Dried%20hibiscus%20leaves%20had%20been%20hanging%20around%20in%20the%20cupboard,%20waiting%20to%20give%20a%20floral,%20tangy%20hand%20to%20the%20enterprise.%20Red%20rice%20(a%20particularly%20toothsome%20form%20of%20rice),%20leftover%20from%20a%20previous%20CCC%20challenge,%20was%20begging%20to%20be%20used%20up,%20and%20would%20complement%20the%20color%20from%20the%20hibiscus.%20Coconut%20milk%20gave%20the%20whole%20thing%20some%20heft,%20some%20sweetness,%20some%20tropical%20flair.%20I'm%20not%20sure%20if%20this%20fulfills%20the%20requirement%20of%20the%20challenge.%20but%20at%20least%20I%20feel%20proud%20to%20have%20tried.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*adapted%20from%20Mark%20Bittman's%20How%20to%20Cook%20Everything%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20oven%20to%20300.%20In%20an%20ovenproof%20baking%20dish%20or%20saucepan,%20stir%20together%20coconut%20milk,%20red%20rice,%20sugar,%20salt,%20and%20tangelo%20juice/zest.%20Drop%20in%20the%20hibiscus%20leaves.%20Bake%20for%2030%20minutes,%20then%20stir.%20Place%20in%20oven%20again%20for%2030%20minutes,%20and%20stir.%20Then%20bake%20again%20for%20another%2020-30%20minutes,%20until%20the%20rice%20has%20plumped%20up%20and%20the%20mixture%20is%20nice%20and%20thick.%20Remove%20hibiscus%20leaves.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
