%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20live%20somewhere%20with%20rising%20temperatures%20and%20have%20long%20since%20declared%20Soup%20Season%20officially%20over,%20just%20do%20us%20a%20favor%20and%20bookmark%20this%20recipe%20for%20sometime%20next%20winter%20or%20spring%E2%80%A6%20it%E2%80%99s%20worth%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlb%C3%B3ndigas%20Soup%20is%20one%20of%20those%20few%20Mexican%20dishes%20that%20I%E2%80%99ve%20rarely%20come%20across.%20Even%20though%20I%20was%20a%20fan,%20I%20would%20never%20see%20it%20provided%20or%20made%20anywhere%20around%20Los%20Angeles.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMenudo%20and%20pozole%20are%20usually%20the%20most%20popular%20Mexican%20soups%20made%20by%20family%20and%20friends%20(and%20most%20easily%20found%20in%20restaurants).%20I%20doubt%20I%E2%80%99d%20had%20alb%C3%B3ndigas%20more%20than%2010%20times%20in%20my%20life%E2%80%A6%20until%20recently.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlb%C3%B3ndigas%20are%20basically%20meatballs%20that%20can%20be%20made%20with%20ground%20chicken,%20pork,%20beef,%20turkey,%20or%20really%20any%20ground%20meat.%20(I%E2%80%99ve%20only%20had%20ground%20turkey%20alb%C3%B3ndigas,%20though.)%20The%20meatballs%20are%20packed%20with%20spices,%20mint,%20and%20uncooked%20rice;%20the%20rice%20grains%20inside%20the%20meatballs%20cook%20and%20puff%20up%20as%20they%20simmer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20alb%C3%B3ndigas%20are%20simmered%20in%20a%20soup%20that%20is%20usually%20a%20clear,%20reddish,%20tomato-y%20broth,%20which%20also%20contains%20chopped%20zucchini%20and%20potatoes.%20I%20think%20I%E2%80%99ve%20heard%20of%20carrots%20being%20added,%20too,%20but%20I%E2%80%99ve%20never%20actually%20seen%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20don%E2%80%99t%20really%20remember%20when%20the%20idea%20came%20to%20me%20that%20I%20should%20make%20alb%C3%B3ndigas%20soup,%20but%20I%20know%20it%E2%80%99s%20been%20at%20the%20back%20of%20my%20mind%20for%20quite%20a%20while,%20possibly%20even%20since%20before%20I%20thought%20about%20making%20pozole!%20But%20first,%20I%20had%20to%20figure%20out%20a%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20first%20soup%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20what%20I%20would%20call%20a%20success%20because%20I%20tried%20blending%20the%20onions%20and%20tomatoes%20together,%20then%20immediately%20combined%20them%20with%20the%20meatballs%20and%20chicken%20broth,%20without%20cooking%20the%20onions%20or%20the%20tomatoes%20on%20their%20own%20first.%20It%20tasted%20good,%20but%20the%20broth%20was%20too%20thick%20and%20there%20was%20something%20missing%20from%20the%20meatballs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20one%20of%20my%20coworkers%20told%20me%20that%20she%20puts%20minced%20fresh%20mint%20into%20her%20meatballs!%20(One%20of%20the)%20problem(s)%20solved!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUnfortunately,%20the%20second%20soup%20was%20not%20a%20success%20either,%20because%20I%20used%20extra%20lean%20turkey%20from%20a%20different%20store%20and%20added%20too%20much%20mint.%20I%20liked%20them,%20but%20Allison%20could%20tell%20the%20turkey%20was%20different%20and%20she%20thought%20the%20alb%C3%B3ndigas%20were%20far%20too%20minty%20(I%E2%80%99d%20used%20about%203%20tablespoons%20of%20fresh%20mint).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20time%20after%20that,%20half%20of%20the%20meatballs%20fell%20apart%20while%20cooking%20because%20I%E2%80%99d%20forgotten%20to%20use%20an%20egg.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFinally,%20my%20fourth%20attempt%20was%20a%20resounding%20success:%20the%20broth%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20clear,%20but%20the%20tomatoes,%20onions,%20and%20garlic%20were%20all%20perfectly%20cooked,%20the%20turkey%20was%20flavorful,%20I%20used%20just%20a%20little%20mint%20for%20a%20nice,%20subtle%20hint%20of%20it,%20and%20the%20potatoes%20and%20zucchini%20were%20awesome%20additions.%20(I%20have%20a%20weakness%20for%20tender%20potatoes%20that%20have%20started%20to%20disintegrate%20into%20soup%20broth,%20making%20the%20soup%20feel%20a%20little%20richer%20and%20creamier%20than%20it%20would%20otherwise.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99m%20very%20satisfied%20with%20my%20take%20on%20a%20traditional-ish%20Alb%C3%B3ndigas%20Soup.%20Just%20add%20the%20usual%20Tapat%C3%ADo%20and%20fresh%20lime%20juice%20to%20round%20out%20the%20flavors%20nicely,%20and%20enjoy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERECIPE:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlb%C3%B3ndigas%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(Serves%205-6)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EActive%20time:%2040%20minutes;%20Total%20time:%201%20hour%2015%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%20for%20the%20meatballs%20(makes%2015-18):%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20to%20make%20it:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20In%20a%20medium%20bowl,%20combine%20all%20of%20the%20meatball%20ingredients%20%E2%80%94%20the%20ground%20turkey,%20egg,%20rice,%20spices,%20and%20fresh%20mint%20%E2%80%94%20using%20either%20a%20spoon%20or%20your%20hands.%20Mix%20until%20each%20ingredient%20is%20well%20incorporated,%20then%20set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20Heat%20oil%20in%20a%20large%20pot.%20Add%20the%20onions%20and%20cook%20slowly%20(5-10%20minutes),%20over%20medium-low%20heat,%20stirring%20often,%20until%20they%20are%20translucent.%20Meanwhile%20use%20a%20food%20processor%20to%20pulse%20the%20garlic%20a%20few%20times,%20then%20add%2
