- Cream together shortening, sugar, large eggs, food coloring, and vanilla. Beat very well till smooth. Sift together flour, salt, and 2 tbsp color. Add in flour mix to creamed sugar mix, alternating with buttermilk.Mix together vinegar and soda. Beat well and blend into batter. Bake at 325 degrees for 25-30 min. Makes 2 layers.
