%20snappy%20retort.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPick%20a%20protein,%20pick%20an%20ethnicity,%20give%20me%20a%20jumping%20point%20and%20I%E2%80%99ll%20happily%20create%20something,%20but%20please%20decide%20before%20I%20leave%20for%20town%20%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20entire%20stressful,%20daily%20conversation%20usually%20takes%20place%20before%208:00%20am.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20one%20particular%20day,%20a%20Saturday%20even,%20I%20was%20saved%20by%20a%20rather%20large%20box%20in%20the%20mail.%20From%20KitchenAid.%20A%20box%20from%20KitchenAid%20is%20ALWAYS%20a%20good%20thing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20little%20back%20story%20%E2%80%A6%20When%20the%20Dear%20One%20and%20I%20moved%20all%20my%20worldly%20possessions%20to%20Maine%202%201/2%20years%20ago,%20my%20slow%20cooker%20was%20the%20last%20thing%20placed%20on%20the%20truck.%20When%20we%20opened%20the%20doors%20some%209%20bouncy%20hours%20later,%20the%20ceramic%20liner%20for%20my%20slow%20cooker%20was%20the%20first%20thing%20off%20the%20truck%20%E2%80%A6%20KER-plunk%20%E2%80%A6%20SMASH%20%E2%80%A6%20sadness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20has%20taken%20me%20that%20long%20to%20pick%20up%20the%20phone%20and%20call%20KitchenAid%20(BTW,%20some%20of%20the%20BEST%20customer%20service%20around)%20and%20order%20a%20new%20one.%20I%20was%20SURE%20it%20would%20be%20expensive.%20I%20was%20SURE%20they%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20have%20%20it.%20I%20was%20SURE%20wrong!%20It%20was%20very,%20very%20reasonable%20and%20the%20shipping%20was%20$2!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20opening%20the%20box%20I%20knew,%20just%20knew,%20that%20whatever%20%E2%80%9Cwhat-do-you-want-Marty%E2%80%9D%20meal%20I%20was%20going%20to%20cook%20was%20definitely%20going%20into%20the%20slow%20cooker.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20something%20wonderful%20and%20magical%20about%20the%20slow%20cooker%20%E2%80%A6%20food%20goes%20in,%20you%20set%20it,%20go%20about%20your%20day,%20come%20back%20to%20a%20home%20filled%20with%20wonderful%20aromas,%20a%20couple%20of%20quick%20sides%20and%20you%E2%80%99re%20done.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20what%20to%20make?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWait!%20In%20our%20chest%20freezer%20in%20the%20bowels%20on%20our%20basement%20is%20a%20chuck%20roast.%20The%20Dear%20One%20offered%20to%20do%20the%20grocery%20shopping%20one%20morning.%20Thrilled%20with%20the%20idea%20of%20rolling%20over%20and%20going%20back%20to%20sleep%20for%20a%20while,%20I%20acquiesced.%20(As%20an%20aside,%20I%20love%20food%20shopping.%20There%E2%80%99s%20something%20about%20looking%20at%20food,%20loving%20picking%20out%20produce,%20picking%20just%20the%20right%20cut%20of%20meat%20or%20fish%20that%E2%80%99s%20just%20so%20%E2%80%A6%20well,%20my%20fellow%20foodies,%20I%20know%20you%20understand.)%20Back%20to%20the%20Dear%20One.%20He%20wanted%20a%20roast.%20Okay.%20I%20made%20a%20list%20and%20sent%20him%20off%20into%20the%20world.%20He%20returned%20with%20a%20chuck%20roast.%20Not%20really%20a%20Sunday%20dinner%20kinda%20roast%20cut%20so%20I%20scowled%20at%20it%20and%20sent%20it%20off%20to%20the%20freezer,%20mostly%20to%20be%20forgotten.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGazing%20through%20the%20slow%20cooker%20books%20on%20my%20shelf,%20I%20came%20across%20The%20Italian%20Slow%20Cooker%20by%20Michele%20Scicolone.%20I%E2%80%99ve%20had%20this%20recipe%20for%20Beef%20in%20Barolo%20bookmarked%20from%20my%20very%20first%20pass%20through%20the%20book.%20What%20cut%20of%20meat%20does%20it%20take,%20you%20may%20wonder.%20Well,%20a%20CHUCK%20ROAST.%20The%20Dear%20One%20has%20been%20saved,%20the%20roast%20has%20been%20liberated%20from%20the%20icy%20depths.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20what%20a%20recipe%20it%20is!%20The%20cloves%20give%20the%20beef%20and%20sauce%20a%20wonderful%20warmth,%20the%20wine%20and%20pancetta%20%E2%80%A6%20just%20layer%20after%20layer%20of%20flavor.%20There%20is%20the%20bit%20that%20early%20in%20the%20morning%20you%E2%80%99re%20searing%20a%20hunk-o-beef%20and%20veggies,%20but%20so%20worth%20it%20in%20the%20end!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENOTE:%20Even%20here%20in%20culinary%20wasteland%20of%20Bar%20Harbor%20I%20was%20able%20to%20find%20chopped%20pancetta%20in%20the%20specialty%20deli%20section.%20I%20always%20keep%20a%20few%20of%20these%20in%20the%20freezer%20for%20a%20quick%20meal%20and%20to%20avoid%20chopping.%20I%20used%20the%20wine%20I%20had%20on%20hand%20and%20open.%20As%20long%20as%20you%E2%80%99d%20actually%20drink%20it%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20dry%20any%20red%20wine%20will%20do.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20the%20flour%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper%20to%20taste.%20Spread%20the%20mixture%20on%20a%20piece%20of%20wax%20paper%20and%20roll%20the%20meat%20in%20the%20flour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large,%20heavy%20skillet,%20heat%20the%20oil%20over%20medium-high%20heat.%20Add%20the%20beef%20and%20brown%20it%20on%20all%20sides,%20about%2015%20minutes.%20Place%20the%20meat%20in%20a%20large%20slow%20cooker.%20Add%20the%20pancetta%20and%20onion%20to%20the%20skillet.%20Reduce%20the%20heat%20to%20medium%20and%20cook%20for%2010%20minutes,%20stirring%20occasionally,%20until%20the%20onion%20is%20tender.%20Stir%20in%20the%20garlic.%20Add%20the%20wine%20and%20bring%20it%20to%20a%20simmer,%20scraping%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20pan.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20mixture%20over%20the%20beef.%20Add%20the%20tomatoes%20and%20broth.%20Scatter%20the%20carrots,%20celery,%20bay%20leaf,%20and%20ground%20cloves%20around%20the%20meat.%20Cover%20and%20cook%20on%20low%20for%206%20hours,%20or%20until%20the%20meat%20is%20tender%20when%20pierced%20with%20a%20fork.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETransfer%20the%20meat%20to%20a%20platter.%20Remove%20the%20bay%20leaf%20from%20the%20sauce.%20Slice%20the%20meat%20and%20spoon%20on%20the%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENOTE:%20I%20served%20this%20over%20garlic%20mashed%20potatoes,%20but%20polenta%20would%20be%20wonderful.%20Sadly,%20the%20Dear%20One%20isn%E2%80%99t%20fond%20of%20polenta.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
