%20was%20blueberry%20picking.%20We%E2%80%99d%20head%20up%20in%20late%20summer%20when%20the%20berries%20were%20perfectly%20ripe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20goal%20of%20our%20blueberry%20picking%20adventures%20was%20to%20harvest%20enough%20berries%20for%20pancakes%20the%20next%20morning%20and%20snacking%20for%20most%20of%20the%20week.%20My%20brother%20and%20I%20(we%20were%20probably%20about%207%20and%202%20around%20that%20time)%20were%20fitted%20with%20the%20farm%E2%80%99s%20ingenious%20blueberry%20pickers%E2%80%93a%20half-gallon%20milk%20jug%20with%20the%20top%20cut%20off%20for%20easy%20filling%20capacity%20and%20a%20string%20attached%20to%20the%20jug%E2%80%99s%20handle%20that%20would%20go%20around%20our%20neck%20like%20a%20necklace,%20leaving%20two%20hands%20free%20for%20efficient%20pickling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20few%20hours%20later%20my%20parents%20would%20have%20their%20jugs%20filled%20(they%20often%20got%20a%20full%20gallon%20because%20they%20were%20bigger)%20and%20my%20brother%20and%20I%20struggled%20to%20fill%20ours%20by%20even%20a%20quarter.%20%20Yet,%20somehow%20when%20it%20was%20time%20to%20stop%20for%20lunch,%20we%20had%20very%20little%20appetite.%20I%20think%20the%20unspoken%20rule%20between%20the%20two%20of%20us%20because%20%E2%80%9C5%20berries%20for%20me,%20one%20in%20the%20jug%E2%80%9D.%20I%E2%80%99m%20not%20sure%20we%20were%20encouraged%20to%20snack%20on%20that%20many%20berries%20without%20paying,%20but%20the%20farm%20never%20complained%20(unless%20my%20parents%20still%20secretly%20paid%20for%20the%20maybe%202-3%20pints%20we%20both%20consumed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20spent%20a%20lot%20of%20time%20(fake)%20camping%20in%20the%20Poconos,%20time%20at%20the%20beach,%20%20a%20trip%20to%20Niagara%20Falls%20and%20even%20a%20visit%20to%20Disney%20World%20when%20I%20was%20young,%20but%20for%20some%20reason%20our%20returning%20trips%20to%20Sandwich%20is%20one%20of%20my%20most%20vivid%20and%20treasured%20vacations%20with%20my%20dad,%20and%20those%20blueberry%20picking%20trips%20probably%20a%20source%20of%20my%20ongoing%20love%20for%20blueberries.%20It%E2%80%99s%20another%20fruit%20I%20find%20myself%20eating%20only%20during%20the%20growing%20season,%20because%20California%20blueberries%20in%20December%20just%20don%E2%80%99t%20cut%20it.%20But%20when%20I%20can%20get%20my%20hands%20on%20some%20fresh%20New%20Jersey%20or%20New%20York%20blueberries,%20I%20tend%20to%20go%20a%20bit%20crazy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20addition%20to%20the%20muffins%20and%20pancakes%20and%20cobbler,%20I%20was%20in%20the%20mood%20for%20soda.%20My%20in-laws%20gave%20us%20a%20soda%20stream%20for%20Christmas,%20a%20gift%20I%20was%20extremely%20excited%20about%20but%20knew%20I%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20really%20get%20much%20use%20out%20of%20it%20until%20the%20summer%20produce%20started%20to%20ripen.%20I%20first%20tried%20it%20with%20some%20violet%20syrup%20and%20vodka%E2%80%93quite%20a%20success.%20Then%20there%20was%20my%20accidental%20strawberry%20rhubarb%20pie%20cocktail.%20My%20next%20experiment%20would%20be%20blueberries,%20after%20the%20many%20fantastic%20blueberry%20blended%20sodas%20I%E2%80%99ve%20had%20from%20Brooklyn%20Soda%20Works.%20I%20ended%20up%20with%20a%20lemon%20blueberry%20syrup%20and%20blueberry%20sage.%20Both%20followed%20the%20same%20basic%20recipe%20from%20P&H%20Soda%20Co.%E2%80%99s%20Make%20Your%20Own%20Soda.%20The%20slight%20tragedy%E2%80%93unlike%20my%20violet%20syrup%20that%20I%E2%80%99m%20still%20enjoying%20now,%20these%20syrups%20only%20have%20a%20shelf%20life%20of%20about%20a%20week.%20So%20drink%20up!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20small%20pot%20set%20over%20medium%20heat,%20combine%20blueberries,%20sugar%20and%20lemon.%20Bring%20to%20a%20slow%20simmer,%20stirring%20until%20berries%20start%20to%20pop,%20about%2010%20minutes.%20Remove%20pot%20from%20heat%20and%20crush%20berries%20further%20with%20a%20potato%20masher.%20Stir%20in%20chopped%20sage.%20Cover%20and%20let%20cool%20on%20the%20stove%20until%20cool%20to%20the%20touch,%20then%20refrigerate%20mixture%20overnight.%20The%20next%20day,%20strain%20syrup%20through%20a%20fine-mesh%20sieve,%20pushing%20as%20much%20syrup%20and%20pulp%20through%20the%20sieve%20as%20possible%20with%20the%20back%20of%20a%20wooden%20spoon.%20Store%20in%20an%20airtight%20container%20for%20up%20to%201%20week.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELemon%20Blueberry%20Soda%20ready%20for%20sipping%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETO%20ENJOY%20YOUR%20SODA:%20Add%201-2%20tablespoons%20of%20syrup%20to%20a%2010oz%20glass%20(depending%20how%20sweet%20you%20like%20your%20soda)%20and%20top%20with%20soda%20water%20(leave%20room%20for%20ice!).%20Stir%20the%20syrup%20and%20water,%20top%20with%20a%20few%20ice%20cubes%20and%20enjoy%20immediately.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELike%20Loading...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERelated%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
