,%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20believe%20how%20fast%20time%20is%20going.%20%20It%20seems%20like%20just%20yesterday%20I%20was%20whipping%20up%20red%20velvet%20cupcakes%20in%20anticipation%20of%20Valentine%E2%80%99s%20Day.%20%20May%20is%20one%20of%20my%20fave%20months,%20mainly%20because%20there%20is%20no%20chance%20of%20snow%20(knock%20on%20wood),%20but%20also%20because%20it%E2%80%99s%20both%20Mother%E2%80%99s%20Day%20and%20my%20mom%E2%80%99s%20birthday.%20%20As%20someone%20who%20would%20seriously%20do%20crafts%20all%20day%20long%20if%20allowed%20and%20could%20easily%20spend%20a%20month%E2%80%99s%20salary%20at%20Michaels%20in%20an%20hour,%20you%20can%20imagine%20that%20as%20a%20kid,%20I%20loved%20that%20entire%20school%20days%20were%20spent%20making%20Mother%E2%80%99s%20Day%20presents.%20%20One%20year%20we%20made%20jewelry%20boxes%20out%20of%20cigar%20boxes%20topped%20with%20macaroni%20sprayed%20gold%20(query%20the%20wisdom%20of%20having%206%20year%20olds%20ask%20their%20parents%20to%20purchase%20a%20box%20of%20cigars%20for%20that%20project)%20and%20another%20time%20we%20made%20collages%20of%20our%20baby%20pictures%20(I%E2%80%99m%20sure%20my%20mother%20appreciated%20me%20cutting%20up%20family%20photos).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20some%20point%20in%20life,%20it%20stops%20being%20appropriate%20to%20make%20your%20mother%20a%20present%20and%20you%20actually%20have%20to%20save%20up%20your%20allowance%20and%20purchase%20something.%20Enter%20many%20bottles%20of%202nd%20rate%20perfumes%20and%20tangles%20of%20costume%20jewerly%20(to%20be%20stored%20in%20the%20jewelry%20box%20she%E2%80%99s%20saved%20all%20those%20years).%20%20The%20thing%20is,%20no%20matter%20what%20you%20give%20your%20mom,%20she%20loves%20it%E2%80%93truly%20and%20honestly%E2%80%93because%20she%20loves%20you.%20%20And%20that%20is%20why%20you%20will%20always%20see%20men%20in%20Walgreens%20the%20morning%20of%20Mother%E2%80%99s%20Day%20buying%20huge%20mylar%20balloons%20and%20Russell%20Stover%20candy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20mother,%20thank%20goodness,%20cannot%20stand%20the%20idea%20of%20Mother%E2%80%99s%20Day%20brunch,%20so%20we%20have%20been%20spared%20chaffing%20dishes%20and%20carving%20stations%20over%20the%20years.%20%20We%20usually%20go%20out%20to%20dinner,%20but%20a%20few%20years%20ago%20I%20decided%20to%20cook.%20%20Mom%20had%20gone%20to%20New%20Orleans%20and%20brought%20back%20a%20cookbook%20from%20the%20Gumbo%20Shop,%20so%20I%20decided%20to%20make%20a%20Louisiana%20dinner%20of%20gumbo%20and%20bread%20pudding.%20%20Even%20though%20I%E2%80%99ve%20always%20loved%20cooking%20and%20baking,%20it%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20until%20recently%20that%20I%20actually%20had%20a%20bit%20of%20a%20clue%20on%20how%20things%20worked%20in%20the%20kitchen%20and%20how%20to%20interpret%20a%20recipe.%20%20So%20when%20the%20gumbo%20recipe%20said%20that%20I%20needed%20to%20boil%20a%20whole%20chicken%20in%20order%20to%20make%20stock,%20it%20never%20occurred%20to%20me%20that%20I%20could%20buy%20chicken%20stock.%20%20Or%20that%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20actually%20need%20to%20cut%20the%20French%20bread%20into%201%20inch%20cubes;%20tearing%20it%20up%20into%20relatively%20even%20pieces%20would%20be%20quite%20all%20right.%20%20I%20spent%20the%20entire%20day%20in%20the%20kitchen,%20stirring%20and%20cutting%20and%20sauteeing%20and%20rather%20than%20relaxing%20on%20Mother%E2%80%99s%20Day,%20my%20mom%20spent%20most%20of%20the%20day%20worrying%20that%20(i)%20I%20was%20going%20to%20set%20the%20entire%20kitchen%20on%20fire%20and%20(ii)%20that%20I%20was%20doing%20too%20much.%20%20I%20think%20that%20she%20was%20equally%20grateful%20to%20sit%20down%20to%20dinner%20(likely%20at%209pm)%20as%20she%20was%20for%20all%20of%20my%20effort.%20%20This%20was%20likely%206%20or%207%20years%20ago,%20and%20all%20these%20years%20later%20she%20still%20talks%20about%20how%20hard%20I%20worked%20that%20day.%20%20Like%20she%20never%20went%20out%20above%20and%20beyond%20in%20the%20kitchen%20for%20me%20(she%20has).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20promise%20to%20write%20about%20the%20gumbo%20recipe%20soon%20(I%20bought%20chicken%20stock%20this%20past%20weekend),%20but%20I%E2%80%99m%20going%20to%20recommend%20you%20commit%20this%20bread%20pudding%20recipe%20to%20memory%20before%20Sunday%20and%20impress%20your%20mom%20(or%20aunt%20or%20mom-to-be%20or%20friend-who-is-like-a-mom%20or%20just%20someone%20you%20really%20love).%20%20It%20is%20decadence%20on%20a%20plate%20and%20a%20tip%20of%20whiskey%20mixed%20with%20butter%20and%20sugar%20never%20hurt%20anyone.%20%20I%20know%20a%20lot%20of%20folks%20have%20had%20bad%20(read:%20soggy)%20bread%20pudding%20experiences,%20but%20this%20version%20is%20more%20like%20a%20super%20moist%20cake.%20%20%20When%20I%20did%20it%20for%20Mother%E2%80%99s%20Day,%20I%20made%20whipped%20cream%20instead%20of%20the%20sauce,%20but%20after%20making%20the%20sauce%20on%20Sunday,%20I%20pretty%20much%20plan%20on%20putting%20it%20on%20everything%20I%20ever%20bake%20again.%20So%20yeah,%20stick%20with%20the%20sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20took%20my%20mom%20some%20of%20the%20bread%20pudding%20I%20made%20over%20the%20weekend%20and%20she%20said%20it%20was%20even%20better%20than%20the%20one%20I%20made%20all%20those%20years%20ago.%20%20Of%20course,%20that%20got%20her%20started%20talking%20about%20how%20hard%20I%20worked%20that%20day%20and%20how%20she%20can%E2%80%99t%20believe%20that%20I%20spent%20the%20whole%20day%20in%20the%20kitchen%20making%20everything%20from%20scratch%20just%20for%20her.%20%20But%20I,%20and%20everyone%20who%20has%20ever%20met%20my%20mom,%20knows%20that%20she%20is%20totally,%20completely,%20without%20a%20doubt,%20would%20do%20it%20again%20(and%20then%20some)%20in%20a%20heartbeat,%20worth%20it%E2%80%A6%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20the%20milk%20and%20butter%20in%20a%20saucepan%20and%20heat%20until%20the%20butter%20is%20melted.%20%20In%20a%20large%20mixing%20bowl,%20combine%20the%20bread,%20pineapple%20and%20raisins%20and%20toss%20to%20mix.%20%20Add%20the%20milk%20and%20butter%20mixture,%20mix%20and%20let%20it%20stand%20for%20several%20minutes,%20allowing%20the%20bread%20to%20absorb%20the%20liquid.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20the%20sugar,%20salt,%20cinnamon%20and%20nutmeg.%20%20Add%20the%20vanilla%20to%20the%20beaten%20eggs,%20then%20mix%20in%20the%20sugar%20and%20spices.%20%20Pour%20all%20this%20over%20the%20bread%20and%20milk%20mixture%20and%20mix%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETransfer%20the%20pudding%20to%20a%20greased%201%201/2%20quart%20baking%20pan%20(I%20used%20a%20brownie%20pan)%20and%20bake%20at%20350%20degrees%20for%2035-40%20minutes%20or%20until%20golden%20brown.%20%20Serve%20warm,%20topped%20with%20about%203%20tablespoons%20of%20Whiskey%20Sauce.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhiskey%20Sauce%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1/4%20cup%20butter,%20softened%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2%20cups%20confectioners%20sugar%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20jigger%20(3%20tablespoons)%20bourbon%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUsing%20an%20electric%20mixtuer,%20slowly%20cream%20the%20sugar%20into%20the%20butter.%20%20Slowly%20beat%20in%20the%20bourbon.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
