%20state%20holidays%20and%20my%20parents%20used%20to%20take%20me%20for%20long%20walks%20to%20see%20the%20light%20decorations%20near%20Rajbhavan%20or%20is%20it%20secretariat.%20We%20would%20start%20from%20home%20in%20a%20taxi%20or%20auto,%20go%20some%20distance%20and%20then%20walk.%20It%20was%20like%20a%20procession%20or%20peaceful%20march%20where%20people%20would%20walk%20or%20strut%20along%20watching%20the%20decorations.%20Then%20after%20the%20seventh%20day%20of%20Onam%20would%20come%20the%20float%20procession.%20Each%20and%20every%20district%20(and%20sometimes%20government%20agencies)%20in%20Kerala%20would%20make%20a%20presentation%20called%20float%20to%20show%20what%20they%20stand%20for%20or%20what%20is%20their%20USP.%20There%20was%20fierce%20competition%20here%20also%20and%20each%20would%20try%20to%20outdo%20the%20others%20and%20better%20themselves.%20This%20I%20used%20to%20watch%20on%20tv%20and%20for%20me%20it%20marks%20the%20end%20of%20the%20Onam%20celebrations%20of%20that%20year%20and%20back%20to%20the%20reality%20of%20routine%20school%20and%20life.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20only%20later%20that%20Onam%20became%20associated%20with%20exam%20days%20or%20the%20First%20term%20exam%20or%20'Ona%20pareeksha'.%20Nail%20biting%20days%20usually%20when%20I%20used%20to%20go%20to%20school%20in%20taxi%20and%20looking%20outside%20the%20streets%20dotted%20with%20pookkalams%20or%20flower%20carpets.These%20were%20done%20to%20invite%20the%20old%20just%20King%20Mahabali%20who%20will%20visit%20his%20people%20on%20Onam%20days.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20I%20never%20used%20to%20enjoy%20a%20sadya%20/traditional%20lunch%20at%20that%20time,%20these%20days%20I%20have%20started%20enjoying%20it.%20This%20happens%20when%20you%20are%20living%20with%20a%20person%20who%20loves%20and%20demands%20Kerala%20dishes%20for%20lunch%20and%20dinner%20if%20possible.Jokes%20apart,%20I%20tried%20a%20simple%20payasam%20or%20kheer%20and%20thought%20I%20would%20post%20it%20here%20today.%20Its%20simple%20and%20easy%20and%20cooks%20with%2030-40%20minutes.%20So%20if%20you%20can%20multitask%20you%20can%20get%20it%20done%20and%20ready%20along%20with%20your%20other%20dishes.%20The%20quantity%20is%20guestimates%20and%20feel%20free%20to%20change%20it%20as%20per%20your%20taste.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECardamom%20Powder:%201/4-1/2%20tsp%20as%20per%20taste.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreparation:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECook%20the%20broken%20wheat%20in%20enough%20water%20and%20keep%20it%20aside.%20The%20water%20should%20be%20completely%20absorbed%20and%20if%20added%20more%20drain%20it%20away.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20deep%20pan,%20add%20the%20jaggery%20syrup%20and%20bring%20it%20boil.%20add%20in%20the%20cooked%20broken%20wheat%20and%20stir%20it%20and%20let%20it%20cook%20in%20the%20jaggery%20for%20few%20minutes%20till%20it%20starts%20thickening%20absorbing%20the%20jaggery.%20Make%20sure%20you%20stir%20it%20periodically%20to%20prevent%20it%20sticking%20from%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20pan.%20You%20can%20also%20add%20table%20spoon%20of%20ghee%20at%20this%20stage.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20in%20the%20medium%20thick%20coconut%20milk%20or%20second%20extract%20of%20coconut%20milk%20and%20continue%20cooking%20on%20low%20heat.%20When%20this%20also%20starts%20thickening%20add%20in%20the%20thick%20or%20first%20extract%20of%20coconut%20milk%20and%20heat%20through%20but%20donot%20boil.%20Remove%20from%20heat%20and%20add%20it%20cashewnuts%20and%20raisins%20sauteed%20in%20ghee%20and%20cardamom%20powder.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20in%20bowls%20as%20a%20wonderful%20healthy%20dessert.%20Normally%20the%20colour%20of%20the%20payasam%20or%20kheer%20should%20be%20dark%20brown%20thanks%20to%20the%20jaggery%20available%20in%20Kerala.%20Mine%20is%20light%20in%20colour%20as%20I%20used%20different%20jaggery.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20can%20actually%20enhance%20the%20recipe%20by%20adding%20ingredients%20like%20nendrapazham%20or%20kerala%20banana%20sauteed%20in%20ghee%20and%20jaggery%20or%20whatever%20fruits%20u%20like%20and%20feel%20will%20enhance%20this.%20This%20can%20be%20made%20completely%20vegan%20by%20avoiding%20the%20ghee%20or%20using%20vegan%20substitutes%20for%20sauteeing%20the%20nuts%20and%20raisins.%20Otherwise%20also%20this%20is%20a%20healthy%20and%20perfect%20payasam%20in%20itself%20and%20hope%20you%20enjoy%20this%20payasam%20for%20Onam.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
