%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20recipe%20though,%20combines%20two%20of%20my%20favorite%20things.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEating%E2%80%A6.and%20drinking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20the%20early%20dishes%20that%20I%20can%20remember%20Ginny%20and%20I%20falling%20in%20love%20with%20as%20we%20picked%20our%20way%20down%20our%20culinary%20yellow%20brick%20road%20together,%20is%20Caprese%20Salad.%20Back%20then%20it%20was%20a%20rare%20sight%20on%20restaurant%20menus%20and%20few%20people%20I%20ran%20into%20even%20knew%20what%20it%20was.%20Gradually%20it%20has%20made%20its%20way%20into%20the%20foodie%20mainstream%20and%20has%20endured%20countless%20variations.%20%20While%20I%20am%20still%20partial%20to%20the%20original,%20I%E2%80%99m%20sure%20it%20will%20come%20as%20no%20surprise%20to%20you%20that%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20resist%20trying%20this%20one.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECaprese%20Martini.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20heard%20me.%20MARTINI.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20I%20have%20basil%20growing%20on%20my%20counter%20and%20fresh%20mozzarella%20is%20so%20much%20easier%20to%20get%20these%20days,%20the%20bottle%20of%20vodka%20came%20down%20from%20the%20rack%20and%20we%20indulged.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20will%20grant%20you%20that%20we%20made%20a%20couple%20of%20tiny%20changes%20and%20our%20picture%20isn%E2%80%99t%20anywhere%20near%20as%20gorgeous%20as%20the%20one%20featured%20in%20FoodNetwork,%20but%20it%20certainly%20was%20tasty.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECaprese%20Martini%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPut%20the%20tomato%20slices%20in%20a%20large%20glass%20container%20or%20pitcher.%20Add%20the%20vodka%20(make%20sure%20it%20covers%20the%20tomatoes)%20and%20a%20pinch%20of%20salt;%20let%20infuse%206%20to%2012%20hours%20at%20room%20temperature.%20Strain%20the%20vodka,%20then%20chill%20until%20ready%20to%20serve.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeanwhile,%20prick%20the%20grape%20tomatoes%20with%20a%20skewer;%20toss%20with%20the%20balsamic%20vinegar%20in%20a%20bowl%20and%20marinate%204%20hours%20at%20room%20temperature.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDrain%20the%20grape%20tomatoes,%20reserving%20the%20vinegar.%20Bring%20the%20vinegar%20to%20a%20boil%20in%20a%20nonreactive%20saucepan%20over%20medium%20heat.%20Reduce%20the%20heat%20and%20simmer%20until%20syrupy,%20about%2020%20minutes;%20let%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20each%20drink,%20drizzle%20some%20of%20the%20balsamic%20syrup%20into%20the%20bottom%20of%20a%20chilled%20martini%20glass.%20Muddle%202%20to%203%20basil%20leaves%20with%20a%20splash%20of%20tomato-infused%20vodka%20in%20a%20cocktail%20shaker.%20Add%20another%201%201/2%20ounces%20tomato-infused%20vodka%20and%201%20cup%20ice;%20shake%20and%20strain%20into%20the%20glass.%20Skewer%202%20marinated%20grape%20tomatoes,%202%20basil%20leaves%20and%20a%20mozzarella%20ball%20on%20a%20cocktail%20pick%20and%20set%20in%20the%20martini.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E***NOTES:%20while%20we%20did%20alter%20the%20recipe%20somewhat,%20it%20turned%20out%20fabulously.%20Instead%20of%20steeping%20the%20tomatoes%20in%20the%20vodka,%20we%20just%20muddled%20some%20tomatoes%20and%20basil%20in%20it%20at%20the%20last%20minute%20(because%20really,%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20plan%20my%20martinis%206-12%20hours%20in%20advance).%20Also,%20we%20didn%E2%80%99t%20reduce%202%20cups%20of%20balsamic%20vinegar%20to%20make%20a%20syrup.%20I%20keep%20very%20good%20balsamic%20vinegar%20on%20hand%20so%20we%20just%20used%20some%20of%20that%20instead%20of%20%20using%20so%20much%20pricey%20vinegar%20for%20a%20couple%20of%20martinis.%20%20So,%20its%20not%20the%20most%20photogenic%20drink%20in%20the%20world,%20what%20with%20the%20tomato%20seeds%20floating%20at%20the%20bottom,%20and%20the%20vodka%20being%20a%20bit%20murky%20(who%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20love%20a%20dirty%20martini?),%20but%20a%20delicious%20little%20taste%20treat%20on%20a%20hot%20Sunday%20afternoon,%20nonetheless.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
