,%20of%20Plum%20Perfect%20Gelato%20fame?%20%20Or%20perhaps%20it's%20his%20Peanut%20Butter%20Chocolate%20Chunk%20version%20that%20caught%20your%20eye?%20%20Well,%20in%20my%20opinion,%20today's%20Ghirardelli%20Mocha%20Chip%20Gelato%20takes%20the%20cake.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBringing%20us%20his%20fifth%20Liv%20Life%20Guest%20Post%20(and%20my%20personal%20favorite!),%20I%20hereby%20give%20you...%20Captain%20Greg!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20was%20just%204%20years%20old,%20my%20Granddad%20would%20sneak%20my%20brothers%20and%20me%20into%20his%20kitchen%20for%20a%20treat%20that%20drove%20my%20Mom%20nuts.%20%20He%20would%20pour%20us%20each%20a%20cup%20of%20coffee,%20then%20add%20lots%20of%20cream%20and%20sugar%20until%20it%20was%20a%20crazy%20delight%20that%20little%20resembled%20the%20%E2%80%9Ccup%20of%20Joe%E2%80%9D%20that%20got%20me%20through%20college.%20Mom%20was%20not%20happy%E2%80%A6%20%E2%80%9COh%20Dad%E2%80%9D,%20she%E2%80%99d%20say,%20%E2%80%9CCoffee%20is%20terrible%20for%20the%20kids!%E2%80%9D%20%20And%20he%E2%80%99d%20chuckle%20and%20ask%20%E2%80%9CWho%20wants%20a%20refill?%E2%80%9D%20%20So%20my%20love%20affair%20with%20coffee%20got%20off%20to%20an%20early%20start,%20and%20when%20it%20collided%20with%20a%20passion%20for%20chocolate%20there%20was%20no%20looking%20back.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMocha,%20that%20magical%20blend%20of%20coffee%20and%20cocoa,%20owned%20me%20from%20the%20first%20time%20I%20tried%20it.%20%20Growing%20up,%20Wednesday%20was%20Baskin%20Robbins%20night,%20and%20one%20of%20my%20two%20scoops%20was%20always%20Jamoca%20Almond%20Fudge.%20%20And%20at%2016%20my%20first%20job%20was%20a%20soda%20jerk%20at%20the%20Carnation%20Ice%20Cream%20Restaurant.%20%20My%20first%20day,%20the%20Manager%20handed%20me%20a%202-gallon%20tub%20of%20Mocha%20Chip%20--%20and%20a%20spoon.%20%20Big%20mistake.%20%202%20hours%20later,%20what%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20inside%20me%20had%20melted%20into%20a%20delicious%20drink%20that%20made%20milkshakes%20for%20a%20week!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20fast%20forward%20to%20now.%20%20I%E2%80%99ve%20fallen%20in%20love%20with%20gelato.%20%20Crisp,%20sharp%20flavors%20that%20far%20surpass%20their%20heavier%20confectionery%20cousin%20--%20ice%20cream.%20%20And%20it%E2%80%99s%20a%20passion%20that%20takes%20little%20more%20than%20patience,%20great%20ingredients%20and%20a%20trusted%20ice%20cream%20churn.%20%20And%20like%20I%20needed%20an%20excuse!%20%20My%20Team%20in%20Training%20runners%20preparing%20for%20a%20marathon%20in%20San%20Francisco%20challenged%20me%20to%20whip%20up%20something%20with%20a%20taste%20of%20the%20City%20by%20the%20Bay.%20%20Too%20easy%E2%80%A6%20for%20a%20guy%20that%20pounded%202%20gallons%20of%20Mocha%20Chip%20as%20a%20teen?%20%20What%20says%20San%20Francisco%20more%20than%20Fisherman%E2%80%99s%20Wharf,%20Ghirardelli%20Square%20and%20that%20silky%20blend%20of%20cocoa%20and%20sugar%20that%20draped%20many%20a%20sundae%20at%20Ghirardelli%E2%80%99s?%20%20Way%20too%20easy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20today%E2%80%99s%20recipe%20is%20a%20flavor%20sensation%20that%E2%80%99s%20straightforward%20and%20simple.%20%20Start%20with%20a%20sweetened%20custard%20base,%20combine%20it%20with%20the%20essentials%20of%20any%20fine%20mocha,%20and%20amp%20it%20up%20to%20another%20level%20with%20Ghirardelli%20chocolate%20chips%20and%20slivered%20almonds.%20%20Then%20join%20me%20back%20in%20Grandpa%20Rathel%E2%80%99s%20kitchen%20for%20a%20celebration%20of%20coffee%20and%20chocolate!%20%20Give%20it%20up%20Mom%E2%80%A6%20%20I%E2%80%99ll%20take%20another%20scoop%20please!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECaptain%20Greg's%20Ghirardelli%20Mocha%20Chip%20Gelato%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMocha%20at%20its%20finest,%20I%20can%20imagine%20a%20bowl%20topped%20with%20a%20shot%20of%20espresso%20for%20an%20even%20bigger%20coffee%20punch!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESeparate%20the%20egg%20yolks%20and%20lightly%20beat%20them%20with%20a%20wooden%20spoon.%20%20Combine%20yolks%20with%20the%20sugar,%20stirring%20until%20the%20mixture%20is%20creamy,%20pale%20yellow%20and%20very%20thick.%20%20Transfer%20into%20a%20large%20saucepan%20(3%20Quarts).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20separate%20saucepan,%20combine%20the%20milk%20and%20cream.%20%20Warm%20the%20mixture%20over%20medium%20heat,%20stirring%20constantly%20until%20steaming.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhisk%20the%20milk%20and%20cream%20into%20the%20yolk%20and%20sugar%20mixture.%20%20Hint:%20%20Start%20with%20just%202%20cups%20of%20the%20milk%20whisked%20vigorously%20into%20the%20yolk%20mixture%20so%20the%20eggs%20don%E2%80%99t%20cook%20solid.%20%20Then%20whisk%20in%20the%20remaining%20milk%20and%20cream,%20adding%20slowly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECook%20over%20a%20low%20heat%20stirring%20constantly%20until%20thick%20enough%20to%20lightly%20coat%20the%20back%20of%20a%20wooden%20spoon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStir%20in%20the%20cocoa,%20coffee%20and%20vanilla.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStrain%20the%20mixture%20into%20a%20large%20bowl%20through%20a%20fine%20mesh%20strainer.%20%20Cool%20completely%20in%20the%20refrigerator%20(at%20least%20two%20hours).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EProcess%20in%20an%20ice%20cream%20making%20following%20the%20directions%20included%20with%20your%20model.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETurn%20the%20gelato%20into%20medium%20container%20with%20lids.%20%20%20Swirl%20in%20the%20chocolate%20chips%20and%20slivered%20almonds%20using%20a%20cold%20bread%20knife,%20stirring%20as%20little%20as%20possible.%20%20Cover%20and%20freeze%20at%20least%2024%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYields%202%20Quarts%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
