%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAssuming%20anyone%20out%20there%20is%20even%20keeping%20tabs%20on%20me%20and%20my%20blog-related%20promises,%20you%20may%20remember%20back%20when%20I%20said%20some%20cocktails%20would%20be%20%E2%80%9Ccoming%20soon%E2%80%9D%20to%20my%20blog.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%E2%80%A6%20it%20turned%20out%20that%20was%20a%20lie.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20just%20know%20so%20little%20about%20fancy%20drinks%20or%20drink-making.%20My%20go-to%20cocktail%20(both%20at%20home%20and%20when%20I%E2%80%99m%20out)%20is%20a%20Gin%20&%20Tonic.%20When%20I%20want%20a%20little%20variety%20(and%20a%20little%20less%20sugar)%20then%20I%20order%20a%20Mojito%20or%20a%20Salty%20Dog%20instead.*%20But%20that%E2%80%99s%20about%20my%20range.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHowever,%20as%20fate%20would%20have%20it,%20two%20auspicious%20events%20led%20me%20to%20create%20the%20first%20cocktail%20to%20appear%20on%20my%20blog%20other%20than%20sangria:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20friend%20Tarah%20gave%20me%20a%20Christmas%20gift%20of%20homemade%20grapefruit%20hibiscus%20bitters!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20discovered%20cara%20cara%20oranges%20(and%20made%20a%20Cara%20Cara%20Orange%20Chocolate%20Cake).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20meant%20to%20be.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20I%20rambled%20on%20about%20in%20my%20chocolate%20cake%20post,%20cara%20cara%20oranges%20might%20resemble%20rosy%20mini%20grapefruits%20when%20you%20slice%20into%20them,%20but%20they%20are%20sweet%20and%20floral%20with%20no%20hints%20of%20bitterness.%20They%20are%20also%20incredibly%20juicy%E2%80%93%20the%20better%20for%20making%20cocktails%20with!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20balanced%20the%20juiced%20cara%20cara%20oranges%20with%20the%20tartness%20of%20fresh%20lemon%20juice%20paired%20with%20vodka,%20but%20I%20think%20the%20bitters%20made%20the%20drink.%20(Tarah%20created%20them%20by%20infusing%20a%20high-proof%20alcohol%20with%20hibiscus%20petals%20and%20grapefruit%20rind.)%20Just%20a%20dash%20graced%20the%20cocktail%20with%20an%20enticingly%20bittersweet%20aftertaste;%20I%20should%20know,%20because%20I%20scientifically%20taste-tested%20the%20drink,%20with%20and%20without%20the%20bitters.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20refreshing%20drink%20is%20reminiscent%20of%20a%20Salty%20Dog%20(without%20the%20salt)%20or,%20admittedly,%20a%20screwdriver%20(without%20the%E2%80%A6%20screw?).%20It%E2%80%99s%20like%20a%20sweeter,%20rosier%20Lemon%20Drop.%20(Have%20I%20mentioned%20that%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20know%20much%20about%20cocktails?)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20my%20Cara%20Cara%20Orange%20Chocolate%20Cake%20blog%20post,%20I%E2%80%99ve%20since%20learned%20that%20I%20was%20enjoying%20(countless)%20rather%20small%20cara%20cara%20oranges;%20some%20of%20them%20are%20actually%20much%20bigger.%20They%E2%80%99re%20not%20quite%20as%20large%20as%20a%20small%20grapefruit%20but%20they%20are%20hefty%20among%20their%20oranger%20relatives.%20This%20is%20why%20I%E2%80%99ve%20included%20the%20note%20about%20%E2%80%9C1-2%20oranges%E2%80%9D%20in%20the%20ingredients%20lists%20below%E2%80%93%20it%20depends%20how%20big%20your%20oranges%20are!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%E2%80%99re%20up%20for%20squeezing%20your%20own%20orange%20juice%20(which%20takes%20several%20minutes)%20but%20not%20for%20making%20your%20own%20bitters%20(which%20takes%20up%20to%20several%20weeks),%20then%20any%20store-bought%20grapefruit%20bitters%20will%20do,%20hibiscus-y%20or%20not.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20don%E2%80%99t%20give%20up%20on%20making%20your%20own%20cocktails%20just%20because%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20own%20a%20cocktail%20shaker%E2%80%93%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20either!%20My%20solution?%20Pour%20all%20of%20the%20ingredients%20into%20a%20mason%20jar%20and%20add%20a%20few%20ice%20cubes.%20Close%20the%20lid,%20give%20it%20a%20few%20vigorous%20shakes,%20then%20pour%20the%20drink%20through%20a%20fine%20metal%20strainer%20(like%20a%20mesh%20colander%20or%20tea%20strainer).%20That%20seemed%20to%20work%20just%20fine!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20cocktail%20was%20such%20a%20hit%20that%20we%20sacrificed%20a%20grapefruit%20to%20make%20a%20second%20sour%20version,%20which%20was%20just%20as%20delicious,%20if%20not%20more%20so,%20than%20the%20original%20lemony%20rendition.%20(I%E2%80%99m%20not%20even%20going%20to%20tell%20you%20how%20many%20cara%20cara%20oranges%20we%20sacrificed,%20or%20how%20many%20of%20these%20drinks%20we%E2%80%99ve%20made%E2%80%A6)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20I%20moved%20to%20Japan%20not%20that%20long%20after%20turning%2021%20in%20the%20states,%20i.e.,%20with%20about%20zero%20knowledge%20of%20bars/bar%20culture%20(in%20the%20U.S.,%20that%20is%E2%80%A6%20let%E2%80%99s%20not%20bring%20up%20that%20semester%20I%E2%80%99d%20already%20spent%20in%20Spain!),%20so%20when%20I%20first%20discovered%20the%20delicious%20Japanese%20cocktail%20called%20the%20Soruti%20Doggu,%20a%20delightful%20mix%20of%20grapefruit%20juice%20and%20vodka%20with%20salt%20around%20the%20rim,%20I%20assumed%20it%20was,%20you%20know,%20a%20Japanese%20thing.%20Turns%20out%20Salty%20Dogs%20exist%20in%20bars%20everywhere%E2%80%A6%20and%20that%E2%80%99s%20okay%20by%20me.%3C/p%3
