%20you%20will%20love%20diving%20into%20Susan%20Wittig%20Albert's%20China%20Bayles%20series.%20Set%20in%20the%20Texas%20hill%20country,%20China%20is%20a%20former%20high-powered%20defense%20attorney%20who%20shifts%20gears%20mid-career%20to%20open%20up%20an%20herb%20shop%20surrounded%20by%20gardens%20in%20a%20small%20town.%20Her%20main%20side%20kick%20is%20a%20red-haired%20Amazon,%20Ruby,%20who%20wears%20flamboyant%20clothes%20and%20shares%20commercial%20space%20with%20our%20heroine%20to%20run%20her%20New%20Age%20shop%20full%20of%20crystals,%20tarot%20cards%20and%20incense.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20a%20thoroughly%20enjoyable%20time%20this%20summer%20reading%20through%20the%20cozy%20series,%20which%20now%20numbers%2019%20books%20in%20all.%20%20Albert%20has%20a%20different%20herbal%20theme%20for%20each%20book%20and%20its%20title%20and%20one%20can%20learn%20a%20lot%20about%20gardening,%20folklore,%20the%20medicinal%20use%20of%20herbs%20and%20even%20try%20out%20some%20delicious%20recipes%20from%20the%20back%20of%20many%20of%20the%20books.%20I%20was%20particularly%20taken%20by%20a%20scene%20in%20Book%202,%20Witches'%20Bane,%20in%20which%20China%20and%20her%20mom%20dine%20at%20former%20nun%20Maggie's%20Restaurant%20and%20have%20a%20lunch%20of%20Cinnamon%20Basil%20Cupcakes,%20thick%20Tomato%20Soup%20and%20Greek%20Style%20Broccoli%20Salad.%20That%20sounded%20like%20a%20fantastic%20combination,%20so%20much%20so,%20that%20I%20ordered%20cinnamon%20basil%20seeds%20from%20a%20catalogue%20just%20to%20try%20out%20those%20cupcakes%20(which%20are%20more%20like%20savory%20muffins).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat's%20where%20I%20was%20stymied.%20I%20had%20a%20nice%20little%20bunch%20of%20Cinnamon%20Basil%20plants%20sprouting%20up%20in%20a%20clump%20in%20the%20garden%20when%20the%20overzealous%20weeder,%20husband%20Dan,%20yanked%20them%20out%20by%20mistake.%20It%20was%20a%20long%20interval%20between%20reading%20about%20this%20mouthwatering%20literary%20feast%20and%20actually%20seeing%20this%20project%20to%20completion,%20but%20it%20was%20a%20worthwhile%20wait.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20bunch%20of%20Cinnamon%20Basil%20with%20gorgeous%20purple%20stems%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBack%20to%20the%20garden%20patch%20I%20went%20to%20plant%20some%20more,%20this%20time%20carefully%20marked%20with%20a%20special%20stake,%20and%20they%20duly%20grew%20into%20the%20handsome%20plants%20you%20see%20above.%20This%20basil%20variety%20really%20does%20have%20a%20spicy%20cinnamon%20fragrance%20and%20taste%20and%20are%20a%20striking%20plant%20with%20dark%20purple%20stems%20and%20light%20purple%20blossoms.%20In%20addition%20to%20using%20them%20in%20the%20following%20Cinnamon%20Basil%20Cupcake%20recipe,%20I%20used%20the%20chiffonaded%20leaves%20liberally%20in%20my%20tomato%20and%20noodle%20salads%20all%20through%20August.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Cinnamon%20Basil%20Cupcakes%20come%20out%20a%20pale%20shade%20of%20green,%20which%20is%20not%20the%20usual%20color%20for%20a%20muffin%20or%20cupcake,%20but%20they%20are%20so%20delectable%20and%20they%20certainly%20make%20for%20a%20colorful%20meal%20paired%20alongside%20deep%20red%20tomato%20soup.%20I%20will%20reduce%20the%20amount%20of%20sugar%20in%20this%20recipe%20when%20I%20make%20them%20again,%20as%20I%20felt%20they%20were%20a%20little%20too%20sweet,%20but%20they%20really%20were%20a%20wonderful%20accompaniment%20when%20served%20warm%20from%20the%20oven%20and%20dunked%20into%20my%20soup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20350%20degrees%20F.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPuree%20cinnamon%20basil%20leaves%20in%20a%20blender%20with%20the%20oil%20until%20it%20is%20a%20fine%20puree.%20Add%20sugar%20and%20egg%20and%20mix%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESift%20together%20dry%20ingredients.%20Add%20to%20basil-oil%20mixture%20and%20combine.%20Add%20in%20sour%20cream,%20milk%20and%20walnuts%20and%20mix%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20at%20350%20degrees%20F%20for%2015-20%20minutes,%20or%20until%20muffins%20feel%20springy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20muffins%20are%20baking,%20you%20can%20whip%20up%20a%20quick%20tomato%20soup%20by%20sauteeing%20some%20onions%20and%20garlic%20in%20olive%20oil%20until%20golden,%20adding%20in%20a%20bunch%20of%20fresh%20or%20canned%20peeled,%20pureed%20tomatoes%20and%20then%20cooking%20over%20low%20heat,%20stirring%20often,%20until%20desired%20thickness.%20Season%20with%20a%20little%20more%20fresh%20cinnamon%20basil%20and%20salt%20and%20pepper%20and%20you%20have%20an%20awesome,%20literary-inspired%20light%20meal.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20hope%20this%20whets%20your%20appetite%20for%20this%20excellent%20herbal%20mystery%20series%20and%20to%20plant%20a%20patch%20of%20cinnamon%20basil%20yourself.%20You'll%20want%20to%20read%20the%20China%20Bayles%20series%20in%20order,%20as%20China,%20Ruby%20and%20various%20family%20members%20go%20through%20a%20lot%20of%20changes%20in%20life.%20I%20saved%20up%20this%20tasty%20post%20just%20for%20the%2014th%20edition%20of%20Novel%20Food,%20which%20is%20hosted%20quarterly%20by%20Briciole.%20Novel%20Food%20invites%20participants%20to%20cook%20
